  • Broncomania GM Game Final Results

Alright, after an insane amount of time and effort, this thing is done and graded. It's a good thing I enjoy it.

The final grade, as scored on a 4.0 scale, consists of:

    1. 50% Free Agency (and you lost points if you did not participate actively)
    2. 50% Draft (The average of my draft score and the score based on the real draft in regards to prospect value).
    3. A push/pull of a maximum of 1 point up or down based on my perception on if you improved the team overall and how much.

My analysis for the Free Agency period for each team can be found here:

My pick by pick draft analysis for each team can be found throughout this thread:

Your final draft grades, including pick by pick breakdowns for my grading and real life grading, can be found here:

      OC Ben Claxton
      DT Alan Branch

Starting up front in the defense, I don’t feel the team got better. Jeff Owens is an interesting talent, but he’s undersized for any position on a 34 line. The loss of Branch hurts in terms of the rotation at NT. I felt OLB was improved, though it could have used more attention. The 2nd year guys will have to step up now for sure and depth is poor. ILB is improved with Posluszny, but he is not the athlete this team needed to replace Dansby. There are basically two limited TED LBs starting inside now. Opposing teams will pick that apart in the passing game. The run defense should be fine though. McCourty will help what has been an annually weak secondary, though it needed more attention, especially at Safety. Getting Rhodes to replace Rolle was nice, but depth is poor. Now, I’ll turn to the offense. The offensive line became worse. Not by a lot, but it lost two solid depth players in Gandy and Claxton. Gandy had been starting, now we’ll see how Brandon Keith does. There is very little OT depth though, but late round pick Derek Hardman should offer something there. Probably not much. Hadnot replaces Claxton as the primary backup at OC. OG remains pretty strong. TE is massively improved with the acquisition of Gronkowski, a local boy to boot. WR remains a team strength, even with the loss of Boldin. White is a developmental/special teams guy. Arizona’s power running scheme got a huge boost when they stole Mughelli from the Falcons. Beanie is going to love him. The running back group remains pretty strong and diverse. QB takes a hit with the retirement of Warner, but getting Rosenfels to compete with Leinart was a good move. Special teams remains decent. Overall, I feel this team improved, though both lines got a little worse, and I think they still need to find an athletic JACK LB, as the centerpiece of their defensive scheme.

      Massive Improvements:
TE, FB, Backup QB, CB, OLB

      Failure to Improve:
OT, DT, S depth, Jack LB, OLB depth

        LB Sean Weatherspoon
        CB/S Donovan Warren
        RB Montario Hardesty
        OC Jeff Byers

        Lost:
        RB Jerious Norwood
        CB Brent Grimes
        FB Ovie Mughelli
        S Thomas DeCoud

The defensive line is much improved with the additions of Ray Edwards and John Henderson. Both have Pro Bowl potential, though Henderson is winding down his career. I also feel like LB has been greatly improved, especially with Weatherspoon slated for the weakside. I’m not convinced Leber was necessary, but if he can’t beat out Nicholas at SAM, he’ll provide good depth. The big problem here is one of the league’s worst secondaries just got massively crappier by trading away Decoud, and to a lesser extent, Grimes. They added Warren in the draft, and he’ll help out, but DeCoud was a future Pro Bowl caliber safety and Grimes was a decent CB. The secondary needed a lot more attention than it received. On offense, the O-line needed some depth and a new OC, but no depth was achieved, and the OC prospect, Byers, is not a good fit for a power scheme. This team really needed TE depth behind Gonzalez, but ignored the need. If he goes down, they have nothing. The WRs remain fine. Atlanta traded away one of the league’s better blocking FBs, and the run game will suffer as he was not replaced. The running game also lost change of pace back Norwood, but saw the addition of Hardesty, which gives the team another RB to pound with. The team doesn’t have a home run threat now though. And the return game will suffer badly without Norwood. QB remains solid. Punter is fine, but a kicker might have been a nice grab. The team will have to roll with Matt Bryant again. Overall, this team stayed about the same. They got stronger in some areas and weaker in others.

        DE, DT, OLB

          Lost:
          OG Marshall Yanda
          OT Jared Gaither

The defensive line probably becomes the most talented in NFL history. The salary cap is busted and the team will have to dump a million players next year to keep it intact, but for now, it’s vastly improved. They needed some help at OLB, but didn’t get it. ILB remains strong. The secondary needed some attention with Reed and Webb injured, and Reed reaching the end of his career. It was ignored. On offense, the O-line took a huge hit with the loss of Gaither and Yanda, two Pro Bowl caliber players. Grabbing Iupati offsets Yanda’s loss, but the team still has a hole at RT. Kyle Calloway is not the answer there as a starter. The team made a great trade in getting complete TE Mercedes Lewis, so that position is bolstered. The running game remains elite. WR has depth and talent. QB is also plenty deep. Special teams remains solid, though a kicker might have been worth a look. This team got better on the D-line and at TE, but it lost talent on the O-line and failed to improve the secondary. Overall, I feel the team improved a little bit.

            Buffalo Bills

            Added:

            OT Trent Williams
            DT Terrence Cody
            S Nate Allen
            LB Jerry Hughes
            LB Brandon Spikes

            Lost:
            LB Paul Posluszny
            WR James Hardy
            LB Kawika Mitchell
            RB Marshawn Lynch

On defense, the Bills filled their biggest need by reaching for Cody. They still need NT depth behind him though. DE wasn’t really addressed, Stroud and Edwards are solid starters, but there is nothing behind them. OLB is much improved with the acquisitions of Hughes and Brooks, though Brooks is still kind of an iffy player to depend on. ILB took a big step back, though the drafting of Spikes helps soften the blow a little. This team needs an athletic JACK type and ILB depth badly. The secondary was already fairly elite, adding Allen to the mix is probably overkill, but it helps improve the unit. On offense, LT gets a big upgrade with Williams, but the O-line needed much more attention. TE remains a weak point for the team. At WR Walter is more proven than Hardy, but his upside is smaller. Overall, WR still remains weak and needed more attention. The team lost Lynch at RB, but didn’t replace him. Fred Jackson can’t carry the load by himself, and there’s hardly any RBs on the roster. QB remains a joke, signing Josh Johnson helps nothing. All areas of special teams remains a strong point. I’m not convinced this team improved overall. They added some really important pieces at LT, NT, and OLB, but RB and ILB got markedly worse, and QB and the other parts of the O-line were not addressed.

            Massive Improvements:
            DT, OLB, LT, Safety depth

            Failure to Improve:

Defensively, the team was trying to overcome it’s loss of Julius Peppers. They didn’t add any DEs to assist in that goal. Everette Brown will have a larger role, but the DE play is going to be drastically worse. However, at DT, they added a big stud in Joseph to help in run defense, and he should be an instant boon. Davis and Beason are superb LBs, the other OLB position is lackluster and the depth is ok. Nothing added to help here. CB remains a strength of the team. Though Safety needed some depth. On offense, the O-line is one of the best in the business and has depth throughout. The team had a huge hole at receiving TE and addressed that nicely with Hernandez. WR remains a weak area, even after adding potential #2 WR LaFell. More attention was needed here, especially for a slot guy. RB/FB remains a team strength. QB remains a team weakness and was not addressed at all. This could possibly submarine the team’s season. The existing QB set does not inspire much confidence. The return game is average, as is the punter. John Kasay at kicker has turned 40, and that position needed some attention. From last season to this season, this team got worse as it lost it’s best player. There needed to be a lot more moves made to improve the team. The draft was solid, but this team is more than three rookies away.

              Massive Improvements:
              DT, TE, WR depth

              Failure to Improve:
QB, Slot WR, DE, OLB, Safety depth, K

                TE Greg Olsen

The D-line needed some depth attention, but received none. It’s still a strength of the team however if Harris can stay healthy. The LBs are rock solid throughout. The secondary is terrible and the team traded away its best CB in Tillman. Myron Lewis will help, but the team still went backwards here. At Safety, they really needed a ballhawk type, which is not Jones’ specialty. He’ll join the large group of strong safeties on the roster. Depth is improved, but free safety was not addressed. On offense, the O-line got some patchwork parts with Petrus and Wang. Definitely solid depth signings, but their starting potential is iffy. The starting talent on the line at RT and OG remains subpar. The team downgraded heavily at TE by traded Olsen, though some of that can be offset by the decreased expectations for the position on Martz’s scheme. However, his loss was not replaced and TE remains devoid of depth. At WR, they added Bryant Johnson whom is not any better than the average collection they already had. This is not a good WR group, though they have some good small, slot-type WRs in Hester and Knox. The running game is solid, but will probably still struggle behind a poor O-line. QB is good, but depth was needed. Special teams remains elite across the board. The team was hamstrung due to limited draft picks, but trading away your best players to get a few more was not the answer. A weak draft further hurt the team. I think the team actually went backwards.

Both DE and DT needed some help, but received none. The team continues to not have a penetrating DT, and the depth at DE is poor. LB remains a team strength and they added to their depth with Edds. CB also remains a team strength and sports quality depth. Safety was not a team strength, but the addition of Mays really benefits that unit. I think they still need additional help at the position though. On the offensive side, the O-line is a team strength, though it is aging. Drafting Asamoah was a good thought, though I’m not convinced he’s as big or strong as the Bengals like in their OGs. TE got a major boost with the theft of Daniels in Free Agency. The WR position remains iffy, but Roberts is a nice prospect for the slot. RB depth remains a massive concern. QB is pretty solid, though a developmental guy might be needed at this point. Special teams looks pretty solid across the board. Overall, I felt this team improved nicely at TE and Safety. A relatively weak draft provided mostly depth. Some key positions were ignored, such as RB and D-line. I feel the team improved overall, though not as much as it could have.

                  Massive Improvements:
TE, Strong Safety, OG depth, slot WR, LB depth

                    WR Carlton Mitchell
                    OG Marshall Newhouse
                    LB Koa Misi
                    S Larry Asante
                    DE Clifton Geathers

                    QB Derek Anderson
                    DT Shaun Rogers

The team traded its best player on the D-line, but they had a very good player backing him up whom now will start and is much cheaper. Still, it’s a downgrade at NT. The veteran presence existing at DE was buoyed by two later round picks, making it a relative position of strength. With the AJ Hawk trade, I feel like ILB is a real strength for the team. OLB is not, but drafting Koa Misi goes a long way towards helping that position. I think CB needed much more help than it got. Brown bolsters the unit temporarily, but is not a long term option. The depth is adequate, but a stud starter was really needed. Safety needed attention, and it got it. Thomas gives the team a superb Free Safety and Asante offers solid Strong Safety development ability. On the offensive side, OT didn’t really get the attention it needed. Newhouse provides a nice OG/OT swing type, but he’s probably not a starter, and RG remains a weak area for this team. If either of the starting OT goes down with injury, this team is in massive trouble. TE is relatively solid. WR is still a mess though. This team needed a stud outside, not another boom or bust pick with questionable hands. This is probably the weakest area on the team, along with the next two positions, RB and QB. RB has very little depth, and while there is some talent, there does not appear to be a true workhorse. An injury here could really sabotage the team. At QB, (and it’s tough to figure which trades happened after our deadline) I believe the team is hitching it’s hopes on Brady Quinn. If he falters, this team might not win many games. Overall the team improved, but not at the most important positions. Still, you can’t do it all in one offseason, and I felt this was a successful one.

                    Massive Improvements:
ILB, FS, OLB, CB, DE depth, OG depth, SS depth

                    Failure to Improve:

                      LB O’Brien Schofield
                      TE Clay Harbor
                      DT Jay Ross

                      Lost:
                      LB Keith Brooking
                      CB Terrance Newman
                      DT Marcus Spears
                      OG Montrae Holland
                      S Pat Watkins
                      RB Marion Barber
                      WR Roy Williams

The team sent underperforming DE Marcus Spears packing in a trade, so the D-line needed some help at DE. They brought in Adam Carriker, but it’s tough to know what he can actually give you. The draft saw two developmental prospects brought in for depth. It’s tough to say the line improved, but it didn’t appear to get worse. ILB did with the loss of Brooking and no new players brought in. This team really needs an athletic JACK type. Bobby Carpenter just can’t cut it. Schofield was a nice grab for 2011, but he won’t help the OLB corps this year, which is fine, it’s a deep corps. The team traded away its best CB, though Mike Jenkins wasn’t too far behind. The draft brought a physical phenom in Ansah, but he’s a bit raw. Safety needed an influx of talent, but only Darrell Stuckey was forthcoming, he’s a solid get though. Overall, the secondary probably got worse with the loss of Newman and little depth at CB behind him. On offense, the O-line needed more attention than it received, though getting imposing OG/RT John Jerry was a really nice move. LT remains a problem area. TE was bolstered with the drafting of Harbor, whom might also chip in at fullback. The WR corps took a temporary setback with the trade of Williams, but the draft brought in DeMaryius Thomas whom has a higher upside. Randel El helps in the slot and with the return game. RB got a little weaker by essentially swapping Barber for White. It’s still the strength of the team though. And QB got stronger with Thigpen added to the backup mix. Special teams remains pretty strong. Overall, this team appears improved, though it likely won’t show it this year. They traded a lot of aged starters for high upside youth.

                        OC JD Walton
                        WR Taylor Price
                        DT Arthur Jones
                        WR Dezmon Briscoe
                        S Myron Rolle

                        Lost:
                        WR Brandon Marshall
                        TE Tony Scheffler
                        DE Jarvis Moss
                        CB Ty Law
                        DT Marcus Thomas

The D-line got some much needed attention with Dan Williams at NT. He should help shore that position up for a long time. Marcus Thomas was traded, but Arthur Jones should be a more productive replacement in the rotation. It would have been nice to get a better 5 tech prospect, but it was not to be. The LB corps got a massive boost with David Harris taking over the TED position. OLB depth remained poor though. CB was not addressed, and it really didn’t need to be. It’s a team strength along with Safety. Safety depth was addressed, though it too did not need to be. On offense, the O-line was bolstered with a pro bowl caliber talent in Yanda at OG and one of the better OC prospects in the draft in Walton. OT depth was ignored and remains a team weakness. TE was downgraded with the trade of Scheffler. WR was downgraded with the trade of Marshall, though Price gives the team a legit deep threat, while Briscoe could provide the physical presence Marshall took with him. At RB, the team picked up a tweener type in Graham that can provide some short yardage help and FB duties. QB remained status quo, which is probably not a great thing. The team didn’t really find a returner or punter, which remains a problem area. Overall, I feel this team is greatly improved with multiple Pro Bowl talents and long awaited D-line help. The loss of Marshall and Scheffler stings though.

                          LB Julian Peterson
                          WR Bryant Johnson

The D-line received a nice boost at DT from McCoy. DE remains a relative weakness though, and no help was forthcoming besides Vandenbosch. LB took a big hit with the loss of Peterson. Even though Levy in the middle shows promise, this is one of the weakest LB corps in the NFL. The team pulled off a nice trade to land Peanut Tillman as their new #1 CB, but they needed even more help at the position. Safety was another area of relative need, and they brought in Reggie Nelson to see how he does paired with Delmas. I actually like this move. Nelson needs to step his game up though. On offense, the O-line was greatly improved and is now four OT deep. I’ll assume at least one moves to start at LG, which was a major weakness last year. OC remains mediocre. TE stayed the same, which is fine as long as Pettigrew recovers timely. The WR corps was improved with Edelman now manning the slot. RB got a huge boost from Jahvid Best. QB remained status quo, which was fine. Special teams remains average. Any way you look at it though, this team is drastically improved. The O-line is much stronger. The secondary is improved, as is DT, RB, and WR.

                            WR James Jones
                            TE Donald Lee

The D-line lost a valuable player in Cullen Jenkins and his hole was not filled. That stings. LB saw AJ Hawk sent packing, while Sean Lee was brought in. I think Lee is better than Hawk overall, but he’s not a TED LB type. Burnett will not be happy if he is asked to move. OLB needed some attention, but just received some depth. This still might be a problem area down the road if injuries occur. The aging secondary got much-needed attention with the addition of two quality prospects. That really shores up the backend of the defense, though another Safety might have been useful. On offense, the O-line was massively bolstered and now is a team strength. With Brown and Gaither, the team netted two elite players at LT and OC. The team drafted Charles Brown early and he should be a keeper at the other OT position as he learns behind the vets. OG got some help from the steady Carlisle. It’s still a somewhat weak area of the team though. TE saw the completion of the youth movement as Donald Lee was sent packing and replaced by talented youngster, Anthony McCoy. The WR position lost one of its dynamic threats, but was so deep, it remains a team strength. The RB corps received a boon with the acquisition of Norwood, an ideal 3rd down and change of pace back. Plus he drastically helps the return game. QB remains a position of strength, but the team is transitioning at Punter and Crosby is on notice at Kicker. Neither was addressed. Overall, this team was greatly improved. The O-line went from chicken dinner to winner. RB was improved. The defense got needed depth and youth all over, if not impact players.

                              WR Kevin Walter

The defensive line needed some attention, particularly at 3 technique DT, where Amobi Okoye has been a relative bust. DE is strong enough, but even the depth at DT is weak. The team needed to address that issue. Meanwhile, the teams’ strongest area, LB, became stronger with the additions of Mitchell and Thomas. Houston was already three deep with starters, so this is really a surplus of talent. Mitchell probably becomes a superb reserve, while Thomas can compete for a SAM LB spot and chip in at DE in the event of injuries. The team’s rumored possible move to a 3-4 defense would benefit this LB grouping, though the team lacks the players up front for such a move. The secondary also needed serious attention, and while the team spent its 1st Round pick on CB, more depth needed to be added, as well as at free safety. On offense, the O-line was already pretty solid, but OG needed to be upgraded, and was not. TE suffered a major blow with the trade of Daniels, whom is one of the best TEs in the NFL. The Texans don’t have a replacement on the roster for his receiving skills. Speaking of receiving, the WR position was possibly improved with the additions of Shipley and Cooper, though it may take a season to see that improvement because Walter is gone. RB got a nice boost when Lynch was acquired, and he should pair well with Slaton, as long as Lynch avoids being suspended. QB remains a strong point of the team, as does special teams. Overall, I don’t think this team got better. They had to replace Dunta with Kyle Wilson, that’s a downgrade. DT didn’t get addressed, they have ridiculous depth at LB, and they made a hole at WR, just to have to refill it with rookies. I won’t even talk about the loss of Daniels. The only area they are improved is at RB, but even that is with a player a mistake away from an eight game suspension.

                              Massive Improvements:
                              RB, LB depth, WR depth

TE, OG, DT, CB depth, Safety depth
