  • I would not want to give up high draft picks to add to the secondary, but hey maybe you are ok with how our DLine has played.

I think Champ and Goodman will be our starters at CB again next year unless Cox can beat Goodman out in camp.

Agreed I think we need to spend our picks on some DE perhaps a safety but I think our worst play has come from our DE.

      • A 2nd round pick for a CB who's going to be 30 at the start of the 2011 season?

        No thanks....

        • J.J. Watt

I know everyone around here loves him, but I want to know why. I don't know anything about him. Is he athletic? Can he rush he passer?

          • He's pretty athletic for his size. He's 6'6" 290, and has a massive wingspan. He's as good as anybody I've seen at getting in passing lanes and batting down balls.

He's an excellent pass rusher. I can't say I've seen him a lot against the run, but I've seen him make a lot of plays in the passing game. MUG states he's good against the run. He's a lso got a relentless motor. He doesn't give up on plays, so ocassionally he'll make a play from backside pursuit.

I might be way off, but he reminds ne of a young Richard Seymour, but not quite as big. However, he has the frame to add another 20 pounds of muscle, and not lose any agility.

            • People say he struggles when he's double teamed.

In our 3-4 wouldn't that be a big problem seeing he'd play one of those end positions?

He'll definitely need to add bulk to compensate for the double teams, but if you look at his frame you'll see he's a very lean 290. He could put on another 20 pounds no problem.

                • MUG has compared him to Mario Williams. That's probably a more accurate comparison than Seymour. However, if he plays in a 3-4 he'll be asked to add weight undoubtedly, but on his frame it shouldn't be a problem at all.

So is it his size and strength that is giving him trouble in the double teams or the technique involved in getting the double team to split?

I'm confused as to whether this guy is a physical best or just greatly fundamentally sound. Maybe he's a mix of both lol but I've heard some good things about him.

If that's true then I'm on board for drafting him if we get a pick high enough.

His best fit is probably as a 4-3 LDE...he would be bigger than your typical 4-3 DE a lot like Mario Williams or could be the next Jamaal Anderson

                        • Yeah, and we shoulda drafted Ed Reed instead of Ashley Lelie, so what's your point?

                          Woulda, coulda, shoulda.....didn't

                          • He's relatively young, I believe. He went to a smaller school originally as a TE.

That suggests to me that he's still growing into his body. He will get stronger with age. I believe he's only 21. Ideally he would just play in passing situations, then as he gets stronger he adjusts and becomes a dominant RDE. I think Vickerson is versatile enough to play either side. Keep Bannan for depth.

                            • - Solid against the run
                              - Very good pash rusher
                              - Big frame, can get bigger with only slight losses in speed/burst - good size for a 3-4 end.
                              - Good intagibles and relentless motor, I highly doubt he'll bust.

The only downside is that he hasn't got tremendous upside. (pardon the pun)

He'll be very consistent. He'll grab a few sacks here and there, get some penetration and cause problems up front. He's still young though and D-linemen often don't become really good until their mid-20's where their body has reached it's physical peak. Regardless, he'll be able to start and make a positive impact.

                              • When the Patriots were at their best defensively, they had Seymour and Ty Warren as interchangeable DE's in the 6'6"-295lb range, and Watt fits that.

Like Seymour or Warren, Watt could play in either system...with us, ideally, he would be a RDE in the 3-4, with Vickerson moving to LDE.
