  • This kind of reassures me that Thomas was a better pick

Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News makes a great point regarding last weekend's Cowboys minicamp. The powers-that-be were gushing like an offshore oil well regarding rookie receiver Dez Bryant.

Says Archer regarding the fact that owner Jerry Jones, coach Wade Phillips, and receivers coach Ray Sherman heaped praise on Bryant: "I couldn't help but think of Bill Parcells in 2006 when he told all of us to put away the anointing oils on Tony Romo after the quarterback came out on fire to help the Cowboys get to the playoffs. The idea wasn't to squelch Romo's confidence but to make him realize he had not arrived yet, to keep him wanting more, to get better."

Perhaps the Cowboys are opting for positive reinforcement with Bryant, talking him up in the hopes that he won't let them down. Privately, we've heard whispers that the team was concerned by his level of fitness -- and by the fact that he would sleep between practices to the point where they had trouble waking him up.

We're told he also had an excuse for everything that went wrong. When he seemed to be out of shape, he claimed that he didn't warm up. When he twisted an ankle, he blamed it on the fact that he was wearing new cleats.

As a result, we're not sure that it makes sense for the team to kiss his ass so publicly, especially since he's represented by the same agent who tried to blow out the slotting process for Michael Crabtree in 2009. Sure, Bryant looked great at time against other rookies and assorted slap****s. When the veterans show up, things could be much different. With Jones, Phillips, and Sherman pumping Bryant up, they could in reality be setting him up for a spectacular collapse.

Either way, it'll be one of the most intriguing aspects of what will be a very intriguing NFL season.

The part that i bolded really makes me happier that we went with Thomas over Dez.

You should be reassured by the fact he isn't making negative headlines. Im just happy we don't have to deal with suspension. The only decision the Broncos have to make is which Qb to start.

Thomas is also more physically gifted...

Yeah I think we did alright.

Since his agent is the same one that negotiated for Crabtree, I wonder how Dez's contract negotiations will go - -

Step 1: Point to mock drafts showing Dez in the Top 10
Step 2: Use same mock drafts to show that Dez should have been the first receiver taken
Step 3: Blow up salary expectations for every player drafted in the 20's

The only hope in this situation is that Jerry wasnt born yesterday. I am pretty sure that negotiating with his franchise will be a very different experience than negotiating with the 49ers

I saw an article on ESPN.com about Bryant after the first night of the draft stating that some teams were worried about an irregular heartbeat condition that he had. I didn't think that much about it at first, but with the way he was stuggling with his conditioning at the minicamp, it just makes you wonder if it's more of an issue.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday that at least one team removed Bryant from its board based on the condition. But Jones said his doctors were not concerned. In fact, he told reporters Friday night that he'd been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat when he first purchased the Cowboys in 1989.

"At least 30 percent of this country has what I have," said Jones.
"My point is, there is nothing about Dez Bryant that caused us to in any way look differently at him about his ability to have a football career in the NFL or his ability to have a normal life."

and the difference between you Jerry, and the 30% of the country is that you're not expected to be a WR in the NFL......

Jerry is one guy that lets his Ego run his brain.... Deion endorsed him, so Jerry was sold, and nothing could detur him.

                  As it became ...

... more evident that Brandon Marshall would no longer be a Bronco, drafting a WR became obvious as well.

Brandon has his positives and negatives. Here's hoping that Demaryius Thomas has mostly the positives. If you like what Marshall brought to the table as a WR, then Thomas seems a good replacement.

Toss in Eric Decker and all of a sudden the receiver corps looks as strong on the O as the secondary is on the D.

Dez Bryant was a controversial guy with talent. Maybe he's a better fit for the Cowboys than for the Broncos. The quoted article raises more red flags than his meeting with Deion Sanders ever did.

I think McD did a great job picking up DeMaryus Thomas and Eric Decker. Add them to Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, Jabar Gaffney and Brandon Lloyd and Denver has 6 good WR's.

Wait till you start seeing Dez tear it up on the field... You guys are reminding me of other Raiders fans last year w/ the DHB pick & trying to justify why he was the better pick than Crabtree. Yeah Demaryius was never as bad as DHB, but Dez was easily the best WR in this draft and best WR since Calvin Johnson to come out.

Do you really think Crabtree would have done any better on the Raiders?

hold out or not, he wouldn't have dropped the ball so much....

A raider fan trying to insinuate that DHB was taken under sound football principals, and that Dez vs DT was anything like Crabtree vs DHB.....that's laughable.

DHB vs Crabtree wasn't even close, it wasn't until he ran a blazing 40 time that the raiders even became interested.

Dez, and DT were pretty darn close talent, and intangables wise.

Dez was easily the better prospect coming out. Take a look at some old draft mocks, most people wanted Dez or they wanted Demaryius in the 2nd round.

And ya, Dez & Thomas are closer in talent than Crabs & DHB.

Dez was considered a better NFL prospect because he ran a pro style offense, of corse he didn't do it his senoir year because he was suspended, but anyway.

That's the only thing that seperated the two was their college offensive coordinators, one ran a power running game, and one a pro style passing attack. The "knock" on DT was that he hasn't ran complex route tree's, but his knockout wonderlic score, and the work acomplished in pre-draft meetings tell the story that learning isn't a problem...
