  • December Mock Draft: Should we go BPA?

Just for reference, I have us picking 3rd, behind CAR and CIN.
    Trades

Orton to AZ for a 3rd, and we swap our 2nd from Miami w/ their 2nd.

Franchise Tag Champ and trade to NE for 2nd #33.

    Draft
    1. Patrick Peterson CB- To answer the question, yes, we should go BPA, and it also fills a need. The CB situation is going to be very interesting. There is a huge chance that we lose both the corners that started nearly all the games this season for us. The Champ and Cox situation immediately makes CB a huge priority, and Peterson is simply the BPA. Our defense needs a lot of work, so going BPA while also filling a need makes a ton of sense. Many would argue that we need to go DLine here, but great DLineman like Fairley come around every year, while Peterson is the "once in a decade" prospect that we usually don't have a shot at drafting. I have us going DLine in the second round, and since we likely won't make the playoffs next year, we could take a DLineman again in the 1st round next year.

    2. Cameron Heyward DT/DE- (From Patriots) -Heyward slips to the second round due to inconsistency, and the surplus of DLine talent in the first few rounds. I believe Heyward would be a great fit at RDE, to play on the same side as Doom. Since Heyward is a great run stuffer, he will help out Doom in the run, since Doom is pretty suspect against the run.

    2. Kyle Rudolph TE- I know, I know, I know. We need defense. But Rudolph is too much talent to pass up. He is the best TE in the draft, and will probably be available in the early 2nd due to his injury. Our new coach will probably want to use a TE as more than just a blocker, and Rudolph can catch AND block well, which makes him an extremely attractive pick. Also, he will be a huge safety blanket for Tebow, since I have him starting next year.

    2. Mark Barron SS- (From Cardinals)- Renaldo Hill has been pretty mediocre this year. He hasn't played as bad as many suggest, but he can definitely be upgraded. Barron is a playmaker, and could immediately compete with Hill for the starting job. Him paired up with a healthy McBath could be a great young safety duo for years.

    3. Jerell Powe NT- It's no secret that the 34 Defense needs a great NT to anchor the line. We lack a young NT to be the future anchor, so we draft Powe here. J Wall can probably play another year, and Powe can learn behind him and eventually develop into a dominant NT we desperately need.

    3. Casey Matthews LB-(From Cardinals)- Our LB's are our one strong point on defense, so long as they are healthy. Haggan is getting up there in age, and we could use more depth so Matthews is a great pick here. I believe he could provide a pass rush on the outside, and kick back inside, depending on what we need from him.

The last picks we have in the 6th and 7th round will be BPA.

After this draft, we have addressed the following needs: CB, TE, SS, NT, DE, and LB. Those are all of our major needs, and this will be a start in the right direction to restore this franchise back into a contender.

So what do you guys think? Constructive criticism is encouraged!

We can't trade Champ Bailey - he's a free agent (or are you assuming we franchise tag him, he agrees to a deal with the Pats, and then we ship him out?)

I'm assuming that we franchise tag him and trade him, I should have been more specific, I'll edit it right now.

        Don't let Champ get away!

Go head and draft Peterson (Cox may or may not be a Bronco next season). Peterson is a much better SAFETY candidate than any safety in the draft if Cox is able to play.
I unfortunately expect the Broncos to lose their last 3 games and Cincy to win at least one of their last 3 games so Broncos could very possibly get the 2nd player in the draft. I don't think the Panthers will want Peterson with the first draft choice.

It would be nice to keep Champ, but if you were him, would you really want to take a pay cut and play for a struggling organization, or would you want a shot at a championship? I don't know Champ personally so I'm not going to say which one he would choose, but if I was in his situation I would go after a ring, so that's why I have him leaving.

I agree Peterson could play safety, but if we lose Champ and Cox, he would be better at corner for us, especially since we have McBath and I have us drafting Barron.

Change Barron to Rahim Moore and I'd be ok with this draft.

Do answer the OP question - yes BPA, all across the board. If possible, trade down, stock up on picks and BPA our way back to respectability.

I like this overall, lots of sound reasoning. Peterson would be a great pick up for us no matter how you slice it or what we do with Champ.

I think Powe could develop into a nice NT, and Matthews could be a nice support man for DJ in the middle. Barron looks like a real good hitting safety prospect. TE is a need and Rudolph looks like the best receiving TE in this years draft.

As far as Heyward, I think if he becomes more consistent he has the potential to be great. My personal preference for DE this year is Cameron Jordan, but he's projected mid to late first which just doesn't match up where were picking. If Jordan slid to our pick in the second I would be ecstatic with Peterson/ Jordan as our first two picks.

Well done, sound reasoning, and your trades aren't too far fetched.

I'd rather take fairley with the first pick FS deunta williams 2a and ras I dowling CB 2b.he's a big physical cover corner. I'd also trade gaffney for a 5th and get schuylar oordt wit that pick who to me is a better TE than rudolph. I'm not too high on casey mattews either he's a little undersize and a little slow

I see your point about Champ not wanting to stay but IF we could keep him and Cox stays, Peterson would be a great talent.
If we lose Champ, I agree to trade him and you draft looks much better.
                      Good job.:thumb:

i love the 1st pick with peterson. i think he is a must have, i think we should get him, even WHEN we keep champ. it makes sense to have a replacement for him at this caliber even when he moves back to saftey years later. idk cox's status, but as mean as it seems i think peterson will be a better corner than cox will, years down i think cox will be good, maybe very good, but peterson will be lockdown sooner than later, and will be like a re-incarnated champ!

idk how i feel with the rest of the picks. i dont really like heyward, i havent seen anything at all from him, to see him playing to his potential in the nfl. i would suggest since we are in rebuild mode that we get peterson, and then trade around maybe to get back in the 1st rnd again, and maybe pick up a better DT/DE maybe clayborne, maybe even quinn if he falls. i think that there is enough depth at DE to pick up a very solid pick in the second all together, (crick, austin, etc) i think we will be fine.
