Just for reference, I have us picking 3rd, behind CAR and CIN.
Trades
Orton to AZ for a 3rd, and we swap our 2nd from Miami w/ their 2nd.
Franchise Tag Champ and trade to NE for 2nd #33.
Draft
1. Patrick Peterson CB- To answer the question, yes, we should go BPA, and it also fills a need. The CB situation is going to be very interesting. There is a huge chance that we lose both the corners that started nearly all the games this season for us. The Champ and Cox situation immediately makes CB a huge priority, and Peterson is simply the BPA. Our defense needs a lot of work, so going BPA while also filling a need makes a ton of sense. Many would argue that we need to go DLine here, but great DLineman like Fairley come around every year, while Peterson is the "once in a decade" prospect that we usually don't have a shot at drafting. I have us going DLine in the second round, and since we likely won't make the playoffs next year, we could take a DLineman again in the 1st round next year.
2. Cameron Heyward DT/DE- (From Patriots) -Heyward slips to the second round due to inconsistency, and the surplus of DLine talent in the first few rounds. I believe Heyward would be a great fit at RDE, to play on the same side as Doom. Since Heyward is a great run stuffer, he will help out Doom in the run, since Doom is pretty suspect against the run.
2. Kyle Rudolph TE- I know, I know, I know. We need defense. But Rudolph is too much talent to pass up. He is the best TE in the draft, and will probably be available in the early 2nd due to his injury. Our new coach will probably want to use a TE as more than just a blocker, and Rudolph can catch AND block well, which makes him an extremely attractive pick. Also, he will be a huge safety blanket for Tebow, since I have him starting next year.
2. Mark Barron SS- (From Cardinals)- Renaldo Hill has been pretty mediocre this year. He hasn't played as bad as many suggest, but he can definitely be upgraded. Barron is a playmaker, and could immediately compete with Hill for the starting job. Him paired up with a healthy McBath could be a great young safety duo for years.
3. Jerell Powe NT- It's no secret that the 34 Defense needs a great NT to anchor the line. We lack a young NT to be the future anchor, so we draft Powe here. J Wall can probably play another year, and Powe can learn behind him and eventually develop into a dominant NT we desperately need.
3. Casey Matthews LB-(From Cardinals)- Our LB's are our one strong point on defense, so long as they are healthy. Haggan is getting up there in age, and we could use more depth so Matthews is a great pick here. I believe he could provide a pass rush on the outside, and kick back inside, depending on what we need from him.
The last picks we have in the 6th and 7th round will be BPA.
After this draft, we have addressed the following needs: CB, TE, SS, NT, DE, and LB. Those are all of our major needs, and this will be a start in the right direction to restore this franchise back into a contender.
So what do you guys think? Constructive criticism is encouraged!
