Kenny Tate is a more natural athlete. He's got the hips to really be effective in man coverage as a safety. In three separate games that I had the opportunity to watch, they even lined him up at CB and put him on #1 WR's. He's got the ability to drop into deep coverage, or come up and put him in man. He's raw, but when I watched him his technique it was pretty clean. He's a big hitter, and he's got that rare versatility to be able to blitz effectively and also muscle his way through blocks. I'll look forward to see what time he runs in the 40. I've heard people predict a 4.45 and others say more towards 4.55.
Robert Sands is more of a centerfield type. He's not going to really be effective in man because he, unlike Tate, sort of shows his 6'5" frame while in press coverage. He's not as athletic, but he really does have some great instincts. In the centerfield role, he does a crazy good job of breaking on the ball, he's usually getting to the receiver right as it is getting there, and he does a really good job of separating the receiver from the ball. I don't believe he is worth a 2nd rounder considering the other prospects in this draft and also the concerns with his coverage skills.
I think Tate is a more balanced player but with superior athletic traits. Sands is more of a heady guy with natural instincts and he diagnoses plays probably better than Tate. I don't think either is a bad option, but I wouldn't be huge on having them both in a defensive backfield. Tate is my first option, though.
I haven't watched alot of Kenny Tate till this year when another member brang it up. However, I watched alot on Sands and he has a deceptively closing speed (Because of his heigth) and he hits & wraps like how you are supposed to. I would say a late 2nd to an early 3rd. But you have some good stuff on him and Tate Snarf.

Yeah, the one thing that seems to jump out when you watch Sands is the way he closes. It seems like he has really good short area burst. I want to see how that translates to the shuttle, because that would show that area of his game. A lot of times he comes out of nowhere to make a play either through a tackle, separation, deflection, or even through an interception.

I would much rather go Deandre MCdaniel in the 2nd and Quinton Carter in the 3rd.

          Both are good players.

Quinton Carter is one of my favorite safety prospects. He's not going to wow you as an athlete, but he always seems to be right around the ball. I love a safety who has a presence about him, and you can tell when guys go over the middle against Carter they expect to have to secure that ball because a hit is coming. He's also proven to be a consistent contributor, and you can't fault his technique. He's just a good all around player.

Deandre McDaniel is one of those guys who is probably best suited as a strong safety type. People get too caught up into a guys 40 time in order to say if he translates into a strong or free safety. That is hardly the case. It's all about tangible skills; hitting, diagnosing, filling, dropping back, etc. When I watch McDaniel, he screams strong safety. McDaniel is a gifted hitter, and athlete, and when you look at some of the best strong safeties, they are big hitters. He seems to me like a guy you want on a TE because of his sheer athleticism. He's also a big hitter and a guy who doesn't shy from physicality. He can definitely have the ability to play FS given his long speed and range to cover the deep routes, but I think his style of play is far better suited for the SS.

But you also failed to mention that Atwater also played againts some of the greatest QB's of all time Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Troy Aikman and Brett Favre. WR's & RB's like Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Emmith Smith, Barry Sanders... . Just because there isn't a dominant giant safety nowadays, Doesn't mean that there can't be one.
There was one, he was Sean Taylor who was tragically taken away too soon. One of the best big safties who were freakishly athletic and hard hitting. RIP Sean Taylor.

Yeh i know deandre mcdaniel is a strong safety. I was saying we should get both not one or the other. I agree with you on quinton carter.

I hate combine results and that is not how I look at players. I watch them player and see what there skills are.

Kenny Tate hasn't been very impressive in coverage from what I have seen.
He hits well, but doesn't wrap up a lot of times. Very fast. Really good at blitzing.
I like him as an SS more than FS.
                Sue me.

(David Bruton I think is going to be a good SS, great tackling skills, speed, and ideal size)
