If Dareus is gone...what you want is irrelevant~

Unless of course you are John Elway, Brian Xanders, or John Fox in disguise!

The pick is Dareus or Fairley, period.

Don't think, just send up the card. The Broncos get into real trouble when they start thinking.

Also, I hope Brian Xanders can evaluate talent better than he speaks. He sounds like a High School dropout when he talks.
I completely agree. Fairley or Dareus MUST be our pick at #2. I just don't understand all of the recent doubts about Fairley. He went from Mayock's and most of the other "draftniks" top player 3 months ago to a guy who is nosediving on their boards for absolutely no reason. He had a great combine and pro day. He backed up his performance on the field with legit #s.

People talk about "character" being a potential issue but nobody, including Mayock, can really site a specific occurrence.

He's never been in trouble off the field, never late to meetings or practices, never given his coaches a reason to bench him for his attitude(unlike Dareus who actually was suspended a few games), and never done anything but give his team 100%.

What are these "character concerns"? What are the real strikes against him:

    1. He was a JUCO transfer. Umm, so what? Jerry Rice, Rod Smith, and Shannon Sharpe all went to division 2 schools because they weren't "good enough" for division I ball. How did that turn out? Fairley had to go to a JUCO to get his grades up to attend a good school. Obviously, he was committed enough to do so.

    2. He is sometimes seen as "dirty" and sometimes gets flagged. Okay, that's something to consider, but at least he plays through the whistle. Everybody's boy Ndamukong Suh tried to rip Jake Delhomme's helmet off (with his head still in it) and was also flagged several times for roughness and late hits during the season. Does anyone want to him stop playing the way he does? I thought defensive players were supposed to play with a mean streak?

    3. His family and Jawalrus Russel's family are friends. They've known each other most of their lives and lived in the same neighborhood. Obviously, because jawalrus was a bust, then Fairley will be...

There... can anyone come up with anything else as to why he's so risky and a potential bust? You can say one year wonder, but so are Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert, Da'qan Bowers, Robert Quinn (who didn't even play last year), and most of the other guys with top 10 grades this year. What am I missing?

It sounds like Denver wants to trade down a bit, and take whoever is available out of:

    Dareus
    Von Miller
    Patrick Peterson.
    Nick Fairley**

*Scares the hell out of me. I think he can be dominant but could bust.

Miler could be our Derrick Thomas.

I want to trade down though in every circumstance.

Ive been saying this for a long time now Ayers has a better frame for a LB like he played at an elite level in high school then a DE or DT like he played in college. He has trouble getting off blocks and has a good enough burst (1.62 10 yard split) that he can be successful, if we take off the extra weight his overall speed (which is still better then Akeem Ayers) will be less impacted. I think his ability as a run stuffer can be more beneficial in the LB position.

Still this will never happen so why not give him a shot at DE. Still with the chances being Doom is not 100% he will have a hard time like last year when he was doubled on a regular basis (by the way Vickerson was the one who should have been opening holes for Ayers). Still with the drafting of an elite DT should free him up more often and any DE we bring in without that interior line will be forced to take double teams as well (wont be pretty for Von Miller who is a tweener like no other not to mention Robert Quinn has speed but at #2 seems like a reach and Bowers has yet to show he is healthy and his reps were pathetic).

DE is an easier position to draft for and Ayers hasnt played enough to prove he is a bust why waist a #2 pick on a player we may not even use.

I don't know...it seems pretty obvious to me! Except for quinn...I would want to shoot my TV if they draft Bowers or Quinn. At #2 you need to pick a starter who will be on the field ALL THE TIME and we already have 2 starting DE's it makes zero sense!

I think Von Miller is worthy of the #2 pick in terms of talent and production. I even think he will make a bigger impact than Peterson. My only doubt about Miller is his role in the Broncos' 4-3. Will the scheme allow him to constantly do what he does best?

http://twitter.com/#!/sportfan73Thanks to FSSW, ESPN, ABC, AggieAthletics, TexAgs, and Metallica for the clips and music. I do not own any of this material.

I was watching Miller's highlights and remembered Mayock saying that Miller defies gravity. Look at his moves. Indeed, his ability to bend and go below the OTs' arms is unbelievable. I would say it's even bizarre. How low he gets while keeping that kind of burst. The guy flies on the field.

He is a very interesting player.
I agree. And only the Broncos know if he fits their scheme and is worthy of that #2 pick. I will say that too many people get caught up in traditional schemes and roles for 4/3 or 3/4. Fox has even stated that their is not much difference behind the two fundamentally. It's the philosophies and schemes you have that form a unique defense...where you align not so much.

If you look at teams like the NY Giants and the Seattle Seahawks (how they used Julian Peterson a few years back) they create schemes that get their SLB involved heavily in the pass rush.

I loved Julian Peterson! Here is a quote about him back in the day:

"That's Julian," said 49ers General Manager Terry Donahue. "He has a tendency to make big plays, plays that stick out in people's minds, that people remember, fans, sports writers, coaches even. You remember his big plays. He's just one of those kinds of guys."
This is what many scouts believe Miller will be. Making plays that we as fans will remember Sunday after Sunday.

Here is another one for you - Derrick Thomas - he played a lot of SLB for the Chiefs. Next to Taylor, Thomas was considered to be the best modern day rushing LB in the game. Thomas is also Miller's all time idle, and watches tons of tape on him to emulate in his game.

One scout compared him to the late great Kansas City Chiefs Linebacker, Derrick Thomas. When your name is used in the same sentence as DT, you know you are a special athlete. I grew up watching DT, and that scout hit the comparison on the head. The good thing about Miller is that he is scheme versatile. He can play outside linebacker in the 4-3 or 3-4
Here is a Miller quote on Derrick Thomas:

I had a coach by the name of Joe Kines, and he coached Derrick Thomas back when Derrick Thomas was in college," Miller said. "He told me a long time ago that I play similar to him. And that day, I went and got film. I watched his film, studied his film and watched all of his interviews. The point of view he had on the game is similar to the way I feel. And I can never ever be like Derrick Thomas and I can never play like Derrick Thomas. But he played with a fanatical effort, a relentless effort. And that's what I can do. That's what I try to do - to play with that same attitude."
I really am excited about the marriage between Dennis Allen with John Fox. I believe these two will bring a healthy medium of fundamental football mixed with modern scheming that will frustrate offences for years.

If you look at that superbowl Giant team...pressure was brought from the edge/middle by the ends and the middle by the linebackers. Most wouldn't even be able to name the DT's...unless the ends moved inside.

With the exception of Suh and a few years back Haynesworth most good penetrating DT's will give you 4 to 7 sacks a year. With a lot less QB pressures than an end or rushing lb would bring.

There a very few 3 down DT's that can do it all and have the stamina to give their all every down. That is the question the Broncos have to answer:
Are these two DT's Dareus/Fairley the complete package that can do it all without taking plays off for the next ten years?

If the answer is I don't think so. Than we should not waste a pick on them and take DT's in the second round that are more one dimensional and niche in their skills that we can mix in match in our rotation within our schemes. I think we can get by with the great 2nd round talent that is available along with a free agent to add to the mix.

We need disruptive difference makers. If the broncos feel that Dareus is the Warren Sapp exception than I'm all for it...but the jury is still out.

Not only does Miller get tons of sacks, but more importantly he is getting crazy fast pressure on the QB it seems over 50% of the time he is sent (which is why I love Doom so much, because he is always bringing pressure...rarely gets washed out). Look how fast the qB'S have to get rid of the ball when Miller comes...man that is what I want with our team. Anybody can cover even the greatest receivers when the window of time to throw is that small. Plus Miller's motor is amazing, even when washed out he creates plays in the backfield where most would give up.

Patrick Peterson is the only talent available worth a no. 2 pick if Dareus is gone....The ideal move would be to trade the no. 2 pick along with Orton to a team like SF at no.7 for thir 1st,2nd, and 3rd picks. Grab Von Miller at no. 7 and take our pick from plenty of good DTs left in the second

Drafting 3 players to be just effective on passing downs is down right the most ridiculous thing I've heard.
Nevis is a rotational tackle. Austin is too until he actually learns to be a tackle. Von Miller isn't some god against the run either.
Of course...read the rest of my post before jumping to conclusions. I stated the realistic way we would probably go if Miller is drafted is a guy like Austin/Nevis in second along with a NT type like Jenkins in the 3rd.

The first was an extreme example of maximum penetration.

By the way Austin is pretty effective against the run for a penatrating DT.

I would rather hear some suggestions of value than criticize parts of my commentary without reading it all...thank you.

By all means I don't think I'm right about all this, just throwing opinions and scenarios out there. The more educated we become as fans, the more we will understand why the Broncos picked who they picked...I personally do not want to be in shock mode when it comes time to make our picks. What seemed to be our biggest holes from last year could be completely different with a new scheme and philosophy now in town.

I do believe Miller is going to be a stud for many years to come, and I am a big fan of strong Linebacking......if we could seal up the middle, as the OP has suggested with solid 2nd round picks, I kind of get the premise of getting Von.

Preferably you trade down a couple of spots to get him, thereby getting another pick in the process.

Well I have seen Dareus compared to Warren Sapp, and Von is more similar to Manny Lawson than Clay Mathews. Nice try.
Fair enough...comparisons are just that and are debatable.

If we took the absolute ceilings of both players we will be getting one heck of a player. I just think we become more versatile and less predictable as a defence taking Miller first.

Either way can't wait to embrace our #2 pick overall. It still hasn't sunk in that we have such a high pick!

DJ had his worst years at SLB...in fact many believe this move severely damaged his career (I am one of them). I think Fox is going to like Wesley at WLB and his speed. I think in a proper scheme, Fox could make DJ an animal in the middle. (Dj was serviceable his first year playing there) Fox will keep it simple for DJ. Fox has been known to get the most of what he's got, scheming to the abilities of his talent. Let's face it JMD defense was the complete opposite. He had a different gameplan every week where he didn't have the proper troops and weapons to execute it.

    Let me ask you...

    Would you rather have

    1. Clay Matthews (Miller comparison)
    2. Darnell Dockett? (Austin comparison)

    or

    1. Ty Warren/Dockett ( Dareus comparison)
    2.Tommy Harris (Nevis comparison)

I would take the first option in a heartbeat if the Broncos feel these are the type of guys they are getting.

If the Broncos feel Dareus is the next coming of Warren Sapp than I would not be disappointed in them going that direction. But if Dareus is not that far off talent wise from a guy like Austin, don't be surprised if we pass on him.

Cool I'll just run my dual TE I formation, and run the ball every single play.
I can almost hear the groans of the crowd as Jamal Charles hit 300 rushing yards.
