  • Akeem Ayers

    Height: 6-3

    Weight: 250-255

7 Sacks and 6 Interceptions in the last two years

I have posted a few of these threads about players who I really like but rarely hear get mentioned.

I havnt heard Ayers talked about really at all and I was just wondering what everyone would think about him in the first if we were to trade down.

There is alot of talk about linebackers especially the SAM spot. I hear Mason Foster is becoming the popular pick however I hve fallen in love with Ayers lately.

He is a big athletic guy with a hell of a lot of durabilty, versatility and skill. He could play many roles on the defense. He could be an every down SAM linebacker which I beleive Von Miller cannot.

He can be used as a situational speed rusher off the edge with his hand in the dirt. He is a little raw rushing the passer and really only has a speed rush however he has potential to develop this part of his game. He is very quick off the snap nd has great closng speed.

He is great in coverage and has very good hips IMO for someone his size. He has great ability to flip his hips and run with a running back or tightend in man to man situations. He also showed ability at UCLA to cover a slot receiver in space with no help. He has reasonable instincts and keeps his head on a swivel in zone.

He is willing as anyone to hit and get involved with pulling guards and fullbacks. Will lower his shoulder into the chest of someone who is in his way in the run game and when he does get caught up he has a good punch to get off and make the play. Good wrap up tackler or will bring the big hit at the right moment.

Overall he is the best SAM linebacker in this draft. He has all the qualities you want in a 4-3 SAM. He is a projected first round pick and some have said he will be avalable at #36 when we pick and if he is im all over that. However I doubt he is there.

However I want him in the first. As much as I beleive we need interior pressure in the run game and pass rush game im just not sold on picking in the top 5 this year. There is no clear number 1 little own top 5. This is a franchise changing pick but for us I dont think it will be. Even if it is Miller-Dareus-Fairley-Peterson none of them change the franchise and turn it around that dramatically.

Plus with the amount of picks we have and the needs and talent on this roster we need more picks in the top 4 rounds. Trading down and gettng Ayers would help fill numerous holes and add talent across the board.

I say if we can trade down and out of the top 5 we do it. I would love to get to 15-20 to get Akeem Ayers. I know some think it will be impossible to trade down but with these two much overhyped and overrated Quarterbacks potentially going number 1 and 3 in Gabbert and Newton we are in the perfect spot for a trade down with a team like Arizona-San Fransico-Washington-Minnasota. These spots arnt spots where you want to take Ayers but I think once you get out of the top 5 and especially 10 you can willingly manuver like Mcdaniels did last year.

My ideal situation would be to get to the #18 pick of San Diegos to pick Ayers.

Obviously trade compensation wouldnt work quite realisticly to get that far down in one move and you would probaly need to trade down three times to get to there.

So a little scenario I was thinking of out of boredom was the following:

Trade the #2 pick to Arizona for the #5-#37-#102
Trade the #5 pick to Washington for the #10-#41
Trade the #10 pick to San Diego for the #18-#82-#89

The top 5 picks would go:

    #1: CB: Patrick Peterson/DT-Marcel Dareus
    #2: QB: Blaine Gabbert
    #3: OLB: Von Miller
    #4: WR: AJ Green
    #5: QB: Cam Newton

    Arizona just got hoodwinked.

I dont know how it matches up with the trade value chart but that thing IMO is very unreasonable and some teams would never ever give up that much for an establishes start player little own to move up like 4 spots in the top 10. Anyway yes this is very unrealstic and obviously wouldnt happen however I beleive something like this could happen. No one would have thought of the moveing around mcdaniels done last year and once a CBA gets signed the rookie wage scale will be implemented and therefor not tying a franchise into a pick forever due to money like Jamarcus Russel. Therefor there would more incentive to move up.

I know people will say it will never happen and I know that but what do you think if it would happen. Would you like it.

Then we could add our 2 DT's-1 Safety-1 DE-1 RB-1 TE-1 OT all in the early to mid rounds.

Call me an idiot or whatever just a few thoughts I had.

So what do you think of Akeem Ayers, would you like to get Ayers if we got down to #18 or moved out of the top 15 or if he fell to #36 and what do you think of this scenario.

    Kill me if you must

Really. I said that. I was just wondering what everyone thought of him as a player. Please refer to my second last sentance where are asked a question of others.

Honestly, I do think Ayers is the best SAM in the draft. But I don't want to trade up to get him. I don't think he is a full round better than Mason Foster.

There was some concern about his 40 time, so he might be slipping on draft boards. If he can slide past the Giants and Saints, he very well could be there at 36.

Slow linebackers have slipped recently, I think Ayers could slip.

Josh is gone right? We are trying to stop being laughed at in football circles, correct? Could you honestly imagine if we decided against the top 17 players - all whom we could have had to select at 18, and take another OLB? We may be able to trade to #4 or #5, but that is as far as I believe we can go. If we don't come out of the first round with Dareus, Miller or Peterson we are crazy.

Only way we look at Ayers, who I like by the way, is if we don't draft Miller and trade back into the 1st round to select him... there is a whole thread about this almost right below this one.

Hopefully. That would be great. I just dont see it happening. And just to be clear he inst a slow player in any way shape or form. Plus I would hate to trade up for anyone at all. We need to gain picks not lose them, I dont want that either.

Are you serious. What Mcdaniels did was really smart. Instead of using the many acquired picks on defense he used them on trading up for Tebow and a receiver. You are flat out wrong. This would be a smart move for this team. So no one would be laughing at us. And if they were they have no clue at all. Have you seen the wholes on ths team and the needs and the top 5 picks talent isnt anywhere as high as in recent years.

Also you say to get another OLB you realised you just said Miller at the bottom of the paragraph. He is a LB.

On what. Trading up for Ayers. Good thing that has nothing to do with my post and maybe to do with your idea.

Ive seen him play, I know hes not a slow player.

I probably should have phrased that slow timed player.

Just my opinions, that you asked for

Ayers is not Von Miller - le't get that straight right away.

Miller/Peterson/Dareus are players that we cannot pass on with how bad our D is. How are the all the "bad" teams getting better... Detroit, St. Loius, etc? They are drafting the best players with their picks and they are performing. Show me an example in NFL draft history of a team being able to trade out of 3 different first round picks and collect all of those other picks... We are also hitting the lottery if this pick is under some new rookie cap!

Let's now say that what Josh did was smart - we had a franchise QB (Cutler), WR (Marshall), RB (Hillis), and good young TE and we shipped them all away only to draft injury prone offensive players and completely forget about defense. I am not saying I disagree with all of the decisions or picks - but if we would have drafted DL and LB when we had the chance instead of reaching for guys like Smith and then dealing him the next year for nothing we could actually start to see ourselves out of this mess.

Your not the only one who has a man crush on Ayers. I like him as well because he is versitle and can play alot of positions in the LB core.

If you look at my latest mock (Flowda's Pre-Draft Mock Draft) You will see how I woould like us to trade down to 5 and still get Dareus while aquiring another 2nd. Trade 2 2nds up to #28 (New England) and getting Ayers. We also would keep the #36 where we would grab Austin.

                    That would give us:

                    Dareus DT
                    Ayers SLB
                    Austin DT.

Best start to the draft IMO.

This is a way better plan in my opinion - take a stud like Dareus - use the extra pick to work your way back into the end of the round to take Ayers (or Liuget if we don't take Dareus.

Ayers ayers doom. We need more meat not smaller agile guys in our front seven for the run stuff. We hurt enough last year. Double up on dt for safe picks. Jumping up for a player like ayers and ignoring bigger needs would put us looking for a dt in next years draft today.

Akeem Ayers isn't small, and fox likes faster guys at every position but DT, and there are some big guys who will be available later like Ellis. There is no 2nd round guy right now who fits the mold of a fox DT, unless a guy like taylor falls.

I did not mean akeem is small but we would not be looking at Tayor austi or peae when we need multi dt looks this draft

Thats why I like my plan of taking Dareus at #5 after a trade down. Trading two 2nds up to #28 and taking Ayers. Then take Austin at #36. That way we double up on DTs and get a SLB.

Trade our 3 for two 4ths if we can and take Marcus Gilbert and Marcus Gilchrist there. BPA after that.
