Height: 6-3
Weight: 250-255
7 Sacks and 6 Interceptions in the last two years
I have posted a few of these threads about players who I really like but rarely hear get mentioned.
I havnt heard Ayers talked about really at all and I was just wondering what everyone would think about him in the first if we were to trade down.
There is alot of talk about linebackers especially the SAM spot. I hear Mason Foster is becoming the popular pick however I hve fallen in love with Ayers lately.
He is a big athletic guy with a hell of a lot of durabilty, versatility and skill. He could play many roles on the defense. He could be an every down SAM linebacker which I beleive Von Miller cannot.
He can be used as a situational speed rusher off the edge with his hand in the dirt. He is a little raw rushing the passer and really only has a speed rush however he has potential to develop this part of his game. He is very quick off the snap nd has great closng speed.
He is great in coverage and has very good hips IMO for someone his size. He has great ability to flip his hips and run with a running back or tightend in man to man situations. He also showed ability at UCLA to cover a slot receiver in space with no help. He has reasonable instincts and keeps his head on a swivel in zone.
He is willing as anyone to hit and get involved with pulling guards and fullbacks. Will lower his shoulder into the chest of someone who is in his way in the run game and when he does get caught up he has a good punch to get off and make the play. Good wrap up tackler or will bring the big hit at the right moment.
Overall he is the best SAM linebacker in this draft. He has all the qualities you want in a 4-3 SAM. He is a projected first round pick and some have said he will be avalable at #36 when we pick and if he is im all over that. However I doubt he is there.
However I want him in the first. As much as I beleive we need interior pressure in the run game and pass rush game im just not sold on picking in the top 5 this year. There is no clear number 1 little own top 5. This is a franchise changing pick but for us I dont think it will be. Even if it is Miller-Dareus-Fairley-Peterson none of them change the franchise and turn it around that dramatically.
Plus with the amount of picks we have and the needs and talent on this roster we need more picks in the top 4 rounds. Trading down and gettng Ayers would help fill numerous holes and add talent across the board.
I say if we can trade down and out of the top 5 we do it. I would love to get to 15-20 to get Akeem Ayers. I know some think it will be impossible to trade down but with these two much overhyped and overrated Quarterbacks potentially going number 1 and 3 in Gabbert and Newton we are in the perfect spot for a trade down with a team like Arizona-San Fransico-Washington-Minnasota. These spots arnt spots where you want to take Ayers but I think once you get out of the top 5 and especially 10 you can willingly manuver like Mcdaniels did last year.
My ideal situation would be to get to the #18 pick of San Diegos to pick Ayers.
Obviously trade compensation wouldnt work quite realisticly to get that far down in one move and you would probaly need to trade down three times to get to there.
So a little scenario I was thinking of out of boredom was the following:
Trade the #2 pick to Arizona for the #5-#37-#102
Trade the #5 pick to Washington for the #10-#41
Trade the #10 pick to San Diego for the #18-#82-#89
The top 5 picks would go:
#1: CB: Patrick Peterson/DT-Marcel Dareus
#2: QB: Blaine Gabbert
#3: OLB: Von Miller
#4: WR: AJ Green
#5: QB: Cam Newton
Arizona just got hoodwinked.
I dont know how it matches up with the trade value chart but that thing IMO is very unreasonable and some teams would never ever give up that much for an establishes start player little own to move up like 4 spots in the top 10. Anyway yes this is very unrealstic and obviously wouldnt happen however I beleive something like this could happen. No one would have thought of the moveing around mcdaniels done last year and once a CBA gets signed the rookie wage scale will be implemented and therefor not tying a franchise into a pick forever due to money like Jamarcus Russel. Therefor there would more incentive to move up.
I know people will say it will never happen and I know that but what do you think if it would happen. Would you like it.
Then we could add our 2 DT's-1 Safety-1 DE-1 RB-1 TE-1 OT all in the early to mid rounds.
Call me an idiot or whatever just a few thoughts I had.
So what do you think of Akeem Ayers, would you like to get Ayers if we got down to #18 or moved out of the top 15 or if he fell to #36 and what do you think of this scenario.
Kill me if you must
