  • Broncos 9 mil over salary cap via denver post

The Broncos are roughly $9 million over the salary cap, according to the Denver Post.

The Broncos could massage several veteran contracts, most notably Brian Dawkins ($7.156 million) and Andre Goodman ($4.080 million). But the team also plans to be active in free agency, filling multiple holes. The tight salary cap situation is one reason we've been expecting a Kyle Orton trade all offseason. He won't hold off Tim Tebow for much longer, and there's no sense in keeping a backup QB with an $8.879 million salary.

If this is true it does put pressure on Orton.

Orton’s salary makes him tough for Broncos to keep

The team figures to shop Kyle Orton around for a mid-round draft pick. The expectation is that the Broncos would be happy to keep Orton if they don’t get the right price, but it’s worth considering if they can afford him.

Orton is due almost $9 million in 2011, which includes a $1.5 million roster bonus. That’s a huge total for a potential backup quarterback, and it’s even more problematic because the Broncos have a lot of money on the books.

Denver has $129 million in salary commitments, according to the Denver Post. They can cut that down by re-negotiating contracts and making cuts before attempting to accomplish quite a bit in free agency.

Tim Tebow is going to need a quality backup because of his physical style of play, but can the Broncos afford to pay so much to a guy not in the plans for 2012?

It seems to us that Orton should only be on the Week One roster at that salary if he has a legitimate chance to start.

Sheesh. I wonder whats going to happen when Dumervil is relegated to a situational rusher.
Considering he is being paid for that 17 sack season.

Thats right. Allen will have all of the answers.

Lol, why would the best pass rusher in the league not be able to play full time?

This is from the same article that we quoted and talked about forever yesterday in a different thread. I still don't believe it's true. The numbers don't add up. Even fudging the number in favor of heavy bonuses I can only come to about $100 mill.

Cause he's too small, kinda like Dwight Freeny and Robert Mathis... oh wait....

He's no where close to the best pass rusher in the league in the 43 defense though. We have years establishing that, plus he's a pretty big liability against the run.

Dumervil's value is as an elite OLB in the 34 defense. He's good enough to start and be a RDE in the 43. He'll flirt with 10 sacks, but he'll get trucked against the run. The contract he has though, he can't actually legitify it playing in a 43. We're going to need to be very creative to get anything close to value out of him in a 43 defense.

Personally, with he and Von Miller, I wish we'd just stick with the 34. We would possibly have the best rushing tandem in the NFL. Our coaching staff has to know this. They have to know Dumervil's limitations. So, I have to assume we'll come up with some scheme (3-3-5?) that utilizes both men in their most effective manner. One thing is for sure, Dumervil is not elite in a standard 43 defense. He's just good. And we're paying him to be the elite of the elite.

He put up 12.5 sacks in '07, before he had even flourished into the player he is now. Don't give me that "He'll flirt with 10 sacks" crap.

Dumervil played with his hand down often in the 34, as well.

He's still top 3, if not higher.
