  • Saturday Bowl Game thread

Figured I would get this up and running for anyone who want to comment on any of the players in todays games. Here are the games today and A&M won after almost blowing another big lead but Tannehill made a couple of big throws to close out the game. But I missed most of it just saw most of Northwestern's comeback though. Was pretty exciting :thumb:

Mercilus already has a sack and it's the 1st quarter.

Yeah he has been in the backfield alot seems like they can't even block him, but I have only seen a couple of play been working so can't catch all the plays.

He hasn't been unblockable, but it seems like he either dominates or he is invisible. Kinda helps that UCLA is terrible though.

If you're watching Illinois, check out Donovonn Young. He's a 6'1" 215 pound freshman running back that averages 5.4 on the year. I played against him last year in the Texas 5A quarterfinals last year, and I watched him hurdle two of my best teammates at the same time as like 2 yards away. He weighed 220 in high school and averaged 11 yards per carry for Katy High School (Texas POWERHOUSE)

Illinois sophomore QB Nathan Scheelhaase is from my home town and he went to RockHurst who my Highschool used to play frequently. He has some nice tools. I never got to play him, but he looks like a decent dual threat QB.

But, both offenses have sucked so far.

That Mercilus guy looks really good. I wouldn't mind it at all if we brought him in to replace the ineffective Robert Ayers with our first rounder (probably around the mid 20ish range). I still think CB is a bigger need though, but drafting young guys that can get after the QB is never a bad thing (see Von Miller pick over Marcell Dareus). Still really early in the process, but he seems the type of prospect that would come off the board around our pick.

I expected no more from UCLA. They came into Houston and got SMACKED. Their top receiving weapons are 6'8", 6'6" (had the catch of the year vs Houston, but still sucks), and 6'4. If you ask me theyre a waste of height.

To label Robert Ayers as ineffective simply because he doesn't get sacks is misguided. He's a consistent run-stuffer, and a very good one at that. The guy always plays with discipline which is very hard to find. He's not a sack master, nor will he ever be, but he does serve a purpose.

All of which makes him a great guy to rotate in, but not a starter. Ayers can be the 3rd DE and work into a rotation based on match ups, but we need a DE who can get sacks and pressure QBs.

Von is great in obvious passing downs, but he will be the most deadly when he can cover as well as rush the QB...will make reads very difficult pre-snap when the QB does not know if Von is dropping back or coming.

                        You're telling me, I'm a 5'11 defensive end. Smh.

                          I am (was) 6'4 corner. I ain't complaining.

He should be a starting DE and be switched out on obvious passing downs. He's perfect for early down situations, obviously.

I understand your point on getting a pass-rush DE as I do believe it's a need, but no way do I spend a first rounder on that when I could go with a penetrating UT to pair with Bunkley that is much harder to find, and much more pivotal to the success of this D. Fletcher Cox and to a lesser extent Devon Still/Jerel Worthy. I'd much rather wait until the 2nd round for a guy that will be brought in for the purpose of rushing the passer.

Guys like Brandon Jenkins or maybe even Vinny Curry if he somehow slips would make sense. Both have good burst off the snap and while they do need to clean up their games, have the potential to be well-rounded pros. Also, a guy I like later on is Adewale Ojomo from Miami. Good motor, good vs. the run, and is above average as a pass-rusher. If we can get him in the 5th or so I'd be ecstatic.

Or hope Jeremy Beal pans out..

More wishful thinking if anything, but it would be nice. Do agree on Ayers, he does the little things right unlike some players on our D.
