I think we NEED another top-notch RB. McGahee was better than expected this year but I don't think he can be as productive at the wrong side of 30 (can definitely still play but 20 carries a game is a bit strenuous and could wear him down even faster). Knowshon is injury prone and I think the general consensus is that he won’t be with us for much longer anyway. I would love to see us add to the defensive front 7 with our first rounder but the thought of us adding a dynamic RB that can both break tackles and has the speed to take it to the house in both the option and running game is just scary. It's well known how much Tebow opens up the running game and a game-changer that has breakaway speed would be another added dimension to help Tebow develop as more teams may have the use that strategy that worked so well for the Steelers.
I just don't see Lamar Miller being available in the 2nd round as some previous posts have suggested, and I actually think he might even be gone before our 1st rounder with the Redskins needing help at RB and having two 1st rounders before us. He is the 2nd best RB in the draft (IMO) behind Trent Richardson (obviously). That being said, if we could get Michael Bush in FA, I say we go for it. If we don't I would have no problem drafting a RB in the first round if and only if we shore up one or two other serious needs in FA. Remember, our D was keeping us in games all year -- but our offense needs some help scoring points. I say if Lamar Miller is available for our 1st round pick, we take him. If he goes or we decide to go a different way (DT, MLB, or safety, don't think there is a TE worthy this early in the draft) with our first pick and don't get help in FA, I think there is decent drop-off in talent after that. Chris Polk wouldn't be a terrible fit but if we don't draft Lamar, I say we fill our other needs with the next couple of picks.
As for drafting RBs in the first round, there is definitely a risk. Keeping that in mind, looks at the RBs that have recently found success after leaving The U since 2002: Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee. Even before that Edgerrin James was succesfull making the jump from The U in 1999. Two of those have found success running for the Broncos and I think Lamar Miller could be a special player in the orange and blue well. Most option teams have a running back that is a threat to take it to the house every time they touch the ball, so even if he didn’t pan out the way I think he could being our primary back, he could still help the team similar to how De’Anthony Thomas helped the Oregon Ducks break a few plays in the Rose Bowl based on his speed alone. Eddie Royal has the speed but he just was as productive getting to the edge and turning it up-field as I would’ve liked to have seen.
Of course this is all speculative and we’ll have to see how the draft pans out. If a special player that fits our system fills a need falls to the 25th pick, pull the trigger. Just my 2 cents, what do you think?
