  • Amobi Okoye?

Amobi Okoye - DL - Bears

The Bears will not be re-signing free agent DT Amobi Okoye.
GM Phil Emery recently hinted Okoye was no longer in Chicago's plans. Per Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune, Okoye is "likely headed" to Denver, Cincinnati, or Tampa Bay. It sounds like the Broncos quietly entered the bidding.

Sounds good, but aren't we already very close to our salary cap? If we sign him, someone will have to go.

I'd take that.. if it was reasonably cheap. Seeing that he's been released from 2 teams so far in his career, hopefully that puts it in perspective for him.

no one knows our cap as of right now. some say we have nothing some say we have 13 million. I honestly think that Goodman will be asked to restructure or will get cut. 4.5 million is too much for a back-up.

          Yes, please.

I'd feel much better about our defensive tackle situation if we bring in Amobi Okoye, draft a defensive tackle early, and have a 100% healthy Kevin Vickerson.

If Porter gets a suspension for bountygate, we might be glad we had Goody for a few games to start opposite Champ.

And Warren comes back from his two years off refreshed and ready to [email protected] and take names.

I'm not counting on Warren, or even remotely excited about him coming back.

My question is, is he really that much of an upgrade over Marcus Thomas? If so, then definitely bring him in! If not, then why not bring back our guy?

I really don't know much about Okoye, but I do know he hasn't stuck with either team he's been on, and that concerns me a bit.

I'd like it. It would mean less pressure about having to draft a DT in a few weeks. He's also still a young player, so there's still a chance he hasn't hit his full potential.

Okoye is a player that hasn't lived up to his potential yet. He's a solid pass-rushing defensive tackle, but was considered very raw coming out of Louisville.

I consider him much more talented than Marcus Thomas.

We could really use a penetrating type DT. If that's the type of player, bring him in!

I agree with you about Warren, I'm not expecting anything, but if he did produce that would be a huge benefit. I'm hoping he does, but not expecting anything.

Sign him and get the best 2nd round DT in the draft. I am not a big DT in the first round guy.......however, if Bronckers is there at 25, that may be a smart move. I mentioned this elsewhere, but Charley Casserly of NFL N rates Brockers as one of the safest picks in the draft.....given his excellent NFL ready run stopping ability, size and performance.

Agreed. I hope Vickerson will play closer to 320 this year and play the nose. I know he got as low as 285 around training camp last year.

He's a much better pass rusher than Thomas. Okoye has something like 15 career sacks compared to Thomas' 1. Not sure how they compare against the run though. I wouldn't be opposed to re-signing both, but if I had to choose one it would be Okoye.
