Stepfan Taylor looks like he could be a really good RB in the future. Ever since Willis McGahee cost us the game against New England, I've been contemplating about Taylor. Even with Andrew Luck's presence, Taylor has performed very well. Taylor has good patience and will read his blocks. He has some breakaway speed and elusiveness to get to the third level of the defense easily.
Consider this:
As of Week 8 in College Football, Taylor has 846 yards and 6 TDs on a 4.8 yards per carry (7 games played)
A four-year RB, Taylor has 3,616 rushing yards in his career to go with 33 TDs. His sixteen 100-yard rushing games is tied for second place in school history.
Now, how will he fit into our offense? Willis McGahee, realistically, has about two or three good seasons left. It's better now than never to draft a RB in the 3rd round that can carry a workload. Ronnie Hillman looks like he has a bright future, but is only a threat in the open space. Hillman should be used in passing situations or 3rd down. I really wanted Knowshon Moreno to succeed, but he hasn't. Moreno should be gone before April. Lance Ball looks like a reliable option to fall back on, but isn't a legitimate threat to the opposing defenses. Stepfan Taylor looks like a great feature RB, considering Stanford's "Life after Luck" situation. Taylor has exactly 696 carries in his career to prove that. Taylor has been able to rush for 153 and 102 yards against USC and Notre Dame, which proves that he can have success against tough defenses. The only concern I have with Taylor is his will to score at the goalline. Stepfan Taylor couldn't penetrate Notre Dame's defense and score a game-tying TD. Plus, Taylor had four downs to try to get in the endzone. Eric Decker is the perfect example of the WILL to score. Against San Diego on MNF, Decker literally plowed through five Chargers to score.
In conclusion to my over-analysis of Taylor, I believe a 3rd round pick to select Taylor would be a great bargain. DeMarco Murray was a 3rd round pick. Stevan Ridley was a 3rd round pick. Shonn Greene was a 3rd round pick. Jamaal Charles was a 3rd round pick. My point is, Stepfan Taylor could be that great RB.
