Stats and the way a player plays are two different things.
Although I agree with Moore being a better free agent, the same can be said about Jairus Byrd. The difference is I don't think we'll be willing to give such large contracts to either of them, or that they'll even leave (specifically Moore).

That's absurd. He'll come cheap because of his injury past.

Compared to what safeties like Byrd, Moore, and Goldson will get, not that much. And his skill set when healthy isn't far behind those safeties.

          • Everyone is saying we need to worry about our secondary...

and we probably do need someone. But I don't think it's as pressing a need if we get guys coming back next yr. from injury. What about the guys that we will be getting back next season? E.G., Tracey Porter, Quinton Carter.

            • Porter is a FA and I cam guarantee you he won't be back. Im a big Carter guy but he doesn't offer much in pass coverage. He will take the role of Jim Leonard next year.

What happened to Porter besides his aliment? We brought him in to play opposite Champ and now finds himself looking for work. I thought he was a really good cover guy...

                • i read that front office is really counting on omar bolden to step up and compete for one the cb spots. i do hope we resign tony carter and pick up 1 more cb whether its thru FA or draft i think we need a good cb. Imo i think raheem made major strides at the safety position and i dont think he needs to be replaced

                  • How about instead we sign Jairus Byrd from Buffalo. He in my opinion is the best FS in the NFL.

He's an aggressive free safety who can lay the wood on backs and receivers. He's IMHO one of the best safeties in the league he's just been injured. I think it would be a small risk worth taking. I think pairing him up with Moore would be great for the future.

                    Thoughts?

That'd be wonderful, but we don't have the money for him either.

He isn't. Football Outsiders' game charting showed him to be a major weakness.

Our defense improved when he went down.

I think Bolden will take a step forward but honestly the more I look at it, I'm thinking Shamarko Thomas (or a guy like him) may be our only DB drafted this year. At 5'10" with great athleticism he can play CB despite playing S in college. He gives us a solid option should Mike Adams regress or get hurt because he can do the same things Adams does. If Bolden doesn't step up, Thomas could take a crack at CB if he has to.

I don't think Thomas would offer much to the secondary at only 5'9". He's Carter's size.

I would prefer some bigger bodies in the secondary. Eric Reid, Jonathan Banks, and Xavier Rhodes are all 6'2" and would be great pickups. Reid could replace Adams and play next to Moore or Rhodes/Banks could be the eventual #1 CB in place of Champ.

I think Bolden should get better, but this team lacks playmakers as of right now. I would take the chance on of those guys.

                            • I'd rather get more pass rushers.

That's the thing though, we really use Mike Adams as a CB more often than we do a S. He's on the LoS for the majority of the game. Those bigger safeties would have a more difficult time playing down there because they're not as good in pure coverage. It's why Adams really doesn't have to worry about Quinton Carter coming back because Carter nor Moore can man up against a RB/TE/WR on the LoS. I brought up Thomas because the team has shown some interest in him and he's a late round pick that can be groomed behind Adams for awhile and contribute on special teams.

I'd love Rhodes or Banks because they'll be lockdown CBs for years to come, I have Banks as our 1st round pick in our mock draft. But they're strictly CBs and unless we move Champ to S I don't see us taking a CB in the 1st round. Carter and Harris are great and Bailey can still play CB effectively. You can't justify taking a CB in the 1st round to only be a special teams player and the 4th CB on the depth chart.
