  • Thoughts on drafting a QB?

The more I look at this year's QB class, the more I think there's a good chance a situation will come up where we take a QB as a value pick.

Of course the obvious rebuttal to this is that we just drafted Osweiler last year. But I don't think you can ever have too many good QB's on the roster. There can easily come a situation where after developing a QB we can sell him off to a desperate team. Or we could be picking someone who proves to be better than Osweiler.

Plus, with Elway calling the shots, if he see's something in a QB I want that QB on our roster, even if the position gets crowded.

If the 4th or 5th round roles around and Landry Jones and Matt Scott are available, I would really like Elway to pick one of them up. Its a more long term approach, but I think it would be a good approach to prepare for life without Manning, whenever that comes.

Maybe in the 7th, but I'd rather wait for Johnny Football or Mariota... Or see what Os has.

The only value pick I see is Tyler Bray. He has a strong arm, can make all the throws, and is very used to a pro style offense. He has shown the potential to be a playmaker at the next level, but due to some less than stellar play and his receivers having quite a few drops, his stock isn't all that high.

However, he is almost a clone of Brock. So we definitely don't need to waste a pick on him.

Maybe we take a flier in the seventh, that's all I would be in favor of. Maybe we take a chance on a guy like Alex Carder who had a prolific passing offense at a small school.

I'll also be very interested to see how Brett Hundley looks in a few years. He could be really good.

Brad Sorensen Southern Utah 6'4 237 in the late 7th. He's shown NFL level arm he just needs to develop better footwork, mechanics and prove he has what it takes to progress through his reads and look off the safety. Could also stand to tighten up his accuracy so pretty much everything you need a unpolished rookie to do. His ceiling isn't their athletically. Or take a undrafted flyer on a guy like Mike Hermann RPI Division III school 6'5 254 (reportedly runs a 4.64 40) In his first three seasons, Hermann passed for 4,821 yards and 34 touchdowns, and ran for 1,425 yards and 22 TDs. In eight games this year for RPI (5-3), Hermann has rushed for 469 yards and six TDs with a long of 88 yards and has completed 60 percent of his passes for 2,080 yards and 21 TDs with eight interceptions. That’s 2,549 yards of total offense, or 78 percent of RPI’s total of 3,262 as a team.

He looks pretty good from what clips I've seen. Quick release, nice touch on the ball and he had solid numbers as far as yards, TDs and INTs. He does have a slight frame, but if you add him to the roster and develop him and fill out his frame in the next couple years you could have something.

I completely agree with you, CTM. I'm not advocating for us to draft a QB this year nor is there a guy that I'm head over heels with as a prospect, but championship teams take the best players available. Like the last few years, I think this year's draft will have 5 or 6 QB's go in the first few rounds, then the remaining prospects will fall to the later rounds. That means that there's a good chance a guy with 2nd-3rd round value and upside could fall to us late in the draft.

For those of you that disagree with this possible notion, I understand your viewpoint, but take this into consideration. When Favre "retired" from the Packers in 2008, their FO spent TWO draft picks on QB's in that year's draft. Even after they selected Rodgers in the 1st round three years prior and gave him all of that time to develop under Favre, they still felt like they needed depth and competition at the position. The top teams draft BPA and take value picks when the situation presents itself.

Like a previous poster mentioned, I'd love to take a shot at Hermann from RPI as an UDFA. The guy has great size, athleticsm and carried his team's offense over the last few years. If the FO doesn't want to use a pick on a QB, Mike Hermann could be a very logical guy to bring in as a PS type developmental QB.

Either way, I prefer us drafting or signing a rookie FA to come into camp and have as the #3 guy that we could stash on the PS instead of wasting a roster spot on Hanie.

With Elway at the helm, don't be surprised if we bring in a rookie QB every off-season. Whether it's via draft pick or as an UDFA, you always take depth and development into consideration.

BTW CTM, outside of the two guys you mentioned, are there any other QB's that you like in that range?

I don't agree with drafting a QB. We have more pressing needs and the QB's in this draft are very weak compared to last year.

completely agree!! I doubt we even sniff a QB with our commitment to upgrading the QBs last year
A healthy Kenneth Dixon is a top 5 NFL RB.

In this draft class I like Nassib alot, although he's probably an early second rounder so its unlikely we could get him in the range that I think it would be feasible.

Dysert looks interesting, he has a very natural looking release and he could easily be in the 4th-5th round range. One kid I really like in the range I'm thinking of is Colby Cameron. I'm not sure where he projects to go because he's not that big at 6'2 205 but he has a very quick release and looks capable of making all the throws. He put up big numbers at Louisiana Tech.

Also, to clear up my logic on this, I'm not saying to take a QB if there is a player who can contribute for us on the board. But if its between a QB that slides and was projected much higher and a player with a much lower grade who doesn't project much more than a backup than I'd take the QB hands down. Based on this class which isn't really top-heavy but sort of clusters in the mid rounds some should fall to us at our later picks.

this is a really weak QB class, why waste a pick?
