Anthems and Protests ---
While we certainly understand the frustration by fans on all sides of the discussion, we have decided to keep the Broncos Country message boards separate from politics. Recent events have brought the NFL to the forefront of political debates, but due to the highly emotional and passionate discussion it tends to involve, we think it’s best to continue to keep politics and this forum separate. Yes, the forum is meant for discussion, but we’d like to keep that discussion to football as much as possible.
With everything going on in our country, it would be nice to keep our complaints and cheers purely related to football here. If you feel passionately, there are plenty of other outlets available to you to express your opinions. We know this isn’t the most popular decision, but we ask that you respect it.
Thank you for understanding.

This QB class looks pretty deep in my opinion. People are overreacting because of the 2012 class, yet I don't see why this depth at QB isn't better than 2010 and as good as 2011. There are 7 or 8 names with 1st-2nd round projections. It's up to scouts and general managers to find which one is the right fit. Geno Smith, Matt Barkley, Mike Glennon, Tyler Wilson, Ryan Nassib, E.J. Manuel, Tyler Bray, Landry Jones. Most of them will have a 1st or 2nd round grade when all is said and done. How is this a weak class? Can't you find a good QB there? Maybe you should look closer.
Just look back at the 2011 draft, when Cam Newton was not considered a 1st round QB by many in the media. Geno Smith should get a better grade than Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder, maybe Jake Locker too, and they were top 12 picks. In 2010, Sam Bradford was followed by Tim Tebow, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, John Skelton... The class of 2013 looks much deeper to me. Also, the failure of previous USC QBs hurts Matt Barkley in the eyes of the media. He does not have a big arm, and now he's being compared physically to Kellen Moore, which is beyond ridiculous.
Geno Smith and Mike Glennon have very good arm talent. Tyler Bray has great arm talent; it looks like he needs to grow up as a person and work on his technique, but his upside is intriguing. Landry Jones also can make all the throws. It's tough to watch his games at Oklahoma because of that wacky offense; there are too many screen passes (similar to Brock Osweiler at ASU) and Blake Bell plays QB on redzone/goal line plays. Maybe there isn't a consensus top QB like in previous years, but there is a bunch of QBs with the necessary skills. Unfortunately, we don't know how much they love the game and how hard they will work as professionals.
The work ethic and attention to detail will make all the difference. The challenge is to find who can be trusted to take their job seriously before they wear an NFL jersey. NFL Draft Scout currently has 3 QBs with a 1st round projection and 4 QBs with a 2nd round projection. Looks like a deep class to me, and we're still in February. Some QBs might rise up draft boards after the interviews and workouts.
This year is - by the proclamation of football analysts everywhere - a weak QB class. If several guys are taken in the first round it will probably say more about the teams desperate to find a franchise QB, then it will say about the talent of the QBs being selected.
Every year guys are reached on at the QB position early and just because guys are selected there, doesn't mean it's a measure of the talent in that year's draft. Tebow was taken in the first for gods sake when most scouts had him ranked as a 3rd-5th round pick.
To answer the OP, I believe the Broncos will look at the QBs every year, so... Why not? No one knows what will happen during the draft. Maybe a mid round QB will be by far the best player on the board. Maybe a QB with a higher grade than Osweiler will be available. Elway said a lot of things, and sometimes what he said was different from what actually happened. Osweiler will not be the "future" if the Broncos find someone potentially better to take his place.

I think you're basing your assessment off of what he said about Tebow, which we all know that he never believed in the kid. He never said he was 'the future' or could be 'championship caliber' because he never drafted the guy and simply inherited him.
With Brock it's different. Elway will give Brock the chance to be 'the future' because he believes he is & invested in him.. he knew all along that Tebow wasn't.
I wouldn't mind using a 6-7 round pick on a QB with read-option experience. At the very least we will get another QB to develop and to lead the scout team against our D.

Same reason why some teams had Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins with a higher grade than Brock Osweiler and somehow the Broncos took Osweiler in the 2nd round. Each team had a draft board and Elway wanted Osweiler just like McDaniels wanted Tebow.

It's more than Tebow. Elway also said "there is no plan B, we're going plan A." All-in with Manning? A draft focused on surrounding Manning with more weapons? No, there was a plan B: Osweiler in the 2nd round.
A year ago, John Elway agreed to another comeback with his beloved Denver Broncos shortly after the ouster of Josh McDaniels, whom many felt had doomed the franchise to mediocrity for years to come.
"Tim Tebow's not going anywhere," Elway said. "I mean, he's going to be a Bronco and we're going to do everything we can and hopefully he's that guy."
John Elway says he just couldn't pass on Peyton Manning's heir apparent, even though he hopes Brock Osweiler will be holding a clipboard for years to come.
"It's always tough to pick a quarterback that you know is not going to play for you for a while. But I think we have high hopes for him in the future to where once Peyton decides to hang them up that he's the guy in waiting that can keep this (going) and we don't miss a beat."
"And he's our guy for the future," Elway said. "And sometimes we have to sacrifice the short-term for the long-term to grab the guy that you believe can be that next guy for you, and that's Brock Osweiler."
Osweiler is the future at this point, but it will take some time until this "future" becomes present. It depends on how long Manning will last. Until then, many things can happen. I'm not saying the Broncos should draft other QB, but don't be surprised if they do. Maybe not this year, but in 2 or 3 years... Who knows?
Just because Elway currently thinks Osweiler is the future it does not mean he will close his eyes and ignore all other QBs in the draft until Manning decides to end his career. Many people were shocked (and even disgruntled) when Elway selected Osweiler in the 2nd round. The NFL is full of surprises, so never say never to the unexpected.

Two things:
1. He was joking when he said "There is no Plan B." I know so because he laughed about it as soon as he said it. Why people are taking that literal is beyond me.. Any solid GM has a plan B for everything. Polian didn't and it's why he's an analyst now and not a GM anymore.
2. Like I said before, Tebow was never Elway's guy so anything he said about him is irrelevant and it was just so the Tebow Taliban didn't flip out any time Elway didn't endorse him as our franchise QB. Furthermore, even if he had plans to keep Tebow around and compete with any young QB they brought in, Nobody imagined arguably the greatest QB of all time hitting the open market.
As far as Cousins/Wilson having a lesser grade than Osweiler, it's easy to sit here and question the move now, because both have displayed their skills in games and Osweiler hasn't - that is by design. He was a high upside developmental QB who was supposed to sit and learn behind Manning.
Poll most Gms before the draft and ask them who has the highest upside of those 3 and I bet most say Brock - he simply has the prototypical size/skillset to excel in the NFL.
Taking a QB in the mid to late rounds 2-3 years from now is a different story than taking one this year when we know we have like a 3 year window to win the big one. The Manning/Brock situation was unique because nobody knew for sure how Manning would recover, so it was imperative to start planning for life after Manning, & not wait to get that guy. There was a lot of risk, thus it became more important to plan ahead.
Besides The Broncos acquired 2 picks in the Tebow trade, so they probably felt that they had wiggle room to grab a guy early, and trust their drafting to be able to get some solid gems throughout the draft. Time will tell if all of these moves were right, but the early reviews on Brock from the coaching staff have been raving.
A few weeks ago EJ Manuel was being projected as a 4th rnd pick. He is moving up probably to the late 1st or 2nd rnd since the senior bowl. The three best QBs last year wre IMO McCarron, Manuel, and a real wild card, Klein, go ahead and laugh,. He's big strong armed and very mobile. His passing mechanics improved every week last year. He is being projected as a 7th rnd selection or UDFA. Since we'll probably have a couple of late comp picks to use why not?
The 2000 QB draft class was also considered "weak". And the Patriots didn't need a QB.
As far as this class goes I think just because no one right now is considered a lock to go in the top 10 doesn't mean that you couldn't find someone in the mid rounds who has talent. Our front office out of everyone in the league should be able to spot talent at the position.
If Elway picks a QB in the 4-7 rounds I wouldn't consider it a wasted pick.
How many picks did they have then? The Patriots always seem to be loaded with picks. They could afford to gamble a pick on Brady then.
I'm not sure how many picks we have this year so if we are scarce, I really hope we're after needs and BPAs. If we had a pick to spare later on and we've gotten into a position where we have already drafted strong players in those two areas, then maybe a QB could be considered.
I'm in the same boat, I trust our FO to make better decisions than fans so whatever they choose, I'll give a chance to.

I agree. I don't expect us to draft one, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. It all depends on where the board fAlls
I like this idea. I wouldn't mind using a 6th or 7th round pick on a developmental QB, but I would rather sign an UDFA (like Klein) to run the scout team.
First off, all the experts knew Cam Newton was going #1. #2 Sam Bradford was the #1 pick in 2009
No they didn't. Much like Vince Young, Cam Newton rode his BCS heroics and draft season hype to a top 5 (in his case number one) pick. When the college regular season ended most "experts" had Cam going in the 10-20 range. He was popularly mocked to the Miami Dolphins at pick 15.

This. I'm a big fan of this idea. Elite teams take this approach every year, regardless of the talent they have on the roster
With the read option becoming en vogue, it may not be a bad idea to grab a guy in that mold to run scout team and develop.
We made it through an entire season with a guy who had multiple surgeries on his neck. From where I sit, we got lucky. And judging by what I saw out of Caleb Hanie, and how raw Osweiller is, the folks who decided to spend a 2nd Rd. pick on a guy who isn't expected to play for a while, also got real lucky.
What happens if our luck runs out in the 1st exhibition game this summer? Caleb Hanie isn't even an option, in my book. Is everybody 100% confident in Osweiller as the 2nd string QB? What if Osweiller craps out? My feeling is that if the Broncos, in doing their due diligence on QBs, as any responsible and professional NFL team does, feels there's a QB out there that gives us a legitimate backup that can compete with Osweiller, then take him. It's the most important position on the field. The Broncos Front Office shouldn't have one speck more loyalty to Osweiller being the guy should Manning go down, than they had for Tebow when he was strapped into the "ejection seat" a year ago.
Jake Plummer has been working with Collin Klein for the last six weeks. He'll be an interesting player to watch for sure. I'll bet that Klein will make someone's team (or practice squad at the very least) this upcoming season.
