Balance is desirable so the opposing defense can't concentrate on one type of play. A rushing attack punishes a defensive front much more than does the passing attack.

Two ways to advance the ball: Is one more "conservative" or "aggressive" than the other? Either way, in order for the play to work, the OL must block. The best O-Lines are the ones that pass and run block equally well.

Pro and college football now use a plethora of both under and direct snap/shotgun formations. Short yardage situations, in which the ball will be advanced by running it, require formations with at least three of the Backs within the tight ends. At least one of these Backs must be a proficient blocker capable of leading/sealing/kicking out. The line must be able to block down and pull.

Wing formations facilitate the rushing attack. Wingbacks may be blocker/receivers, or fast runner/receivers. The latter are especially effective on Counter plays as those who have ever defended a Wing-T team know.

The most effective rushing attacks are series-based, built on one formation and play that require the defense to adjust to stop it. The other plays in the series attack the adjustments.

Any running back can gain positive yardage if the play is blocked properly, but when the defense expects a run, the best formations to get a first down or a touchdown have four backs inside the tight ends, and the best series are ones that use misdirection. Single Back formations are extremely limited on misdirection. QB fakes and counter steps by the RB are about all that is available short of fly motion by a Wingback.
Well put. Took the words from my mouth. Hillman by himself is subpar in single back formations. Do you know how they fixed that issue even 10 years ago? The put a fullback or an H-back to help block for both the runner and the QB and allowed for dump offs and screens from both running back positions. Virgil Green or Hester should have been in the game alongside Hillman in the backfield to cover his deficiency in protection. On the other hand there's a good chance we never practiced any real time in traditional pro sets like the I formation or offset I or Split back

I agree that Hester should have been back there with him

        • After reading this whole thread, I think I'm going to switch to being an Oakland fan because of all the sour grapes around here.
