It is my contention that shanahan was a good HC but his draft prowess sucked.

Go back and look at how many players drafted that never made it past TC #3.

You will be astonished to see just how bad he was at picking players.

Look at how many were actually resigned vs those that moved on. Or in most cases out.

The better players started with mc Daniels second draft although Ayers is no slouch and well more o may turn into a great player yet.
If you follow the quote and the thread you see I was agreeing the last two drafts were good and saying I am tired of drafts

producing a starter every other year or so and giving us almost no depth.
Not sure how you took that into where your post went but ok

Btw I am not a fan of McD drafts. Not sure if Decker, DT, Franklin or Beadles would have produced the way they are if McD was still here. Part of the draft is having the people in place to train the players how to play and McD failed at that. While our OL is doing good now it was definately going downhill fast under McD. I think the only thing McD has going for him is his offensive Xs/Os and preparation skills that every Belicheat baby knows but seems to not be able to replicate the success. Imo it shows all the Xs/Os plus preperation means NOTHING if you do not have the players to execute it and the coaches to teach it. It also shows Tom Brady could probably make any poster on these boards look like the next Bill Walsh.

Shanahan was too much a Boom or Bust guy imo. Think that and his nose for the kill made him a great coach and playcaller but it also hurt him in the draft and free agency where patience and prudence are ways to go.
    Skill + Effort = Talent. Talent + Effort = Achievement. A. Duckworth - Grit.

If you have an oppportunity to make the final play to win the game, go for it. You might not get that chance again to win the game. John Fox is not a terrible coach but sometimes he can make terrible coaching decisions (being conservative at times). Sometimes you have to take risks. Sometimes it may fail but sometimes it will pay off. I don't like failure whatsoever. I would rather fail by doing my best than to fail not doing nothing.
There is absolutely no evidence that playing conservative usually leads to losing, and this is only true in the imaginations of pass happy fans. Ofcourse SOMETIMES a team fails when trying to run the clock down, because they don't have the skills to do it. If you don't have the skills to run down the clock you will be prone to blowing leads...Atlanta was unbeaten when attaining a 2 score lead at ANY point during the game in the Smith era, until they became a team that took the keep passing mentality..now they're a team that blows 3 score leads 2 weeks in a row.

Bottom line, this nonsense going around that aggressive play calling is needed to win is as I said, nonsense. Otherwise the Giants never beat the Bills, or the Pats in the SB. They played great offenses, wanted to limit their posessions by eating clock.

Its really unbelievable how people are focusing more on Fox's play calling, being comfortable with the clock running down to 1:15..rather than the defense giving up a TD in that short of time. You need a defense to win a championship, and the only way around it is limiting the other teams posessions so each stop is more significant, and having some kind of a "bend but don't break defense

the fact that there is only a 1-2 year window is what I was talking about when I said it was a bad move to sign Peyton. The 2012 season worked out better than I thought, however we basically gave up the future we were building for him. When Peyton goes to a team, it becomes centered around him to the point that when he leaves they fall into rebuilding mode. If you take a chance like that, on someone that won't be around for very long you have to win a Superbowl or its a failure, period

Shanahan certainly did not have a nose for trap games or early east coasters. Lost his ass in Florida and to a bunch of teams that should not have even been on the field with us let alone kick our ass.

Back to the original post?.....Yeah, I think we need to go all in this year and next. Osweiler may be John Elway the 2nd, but we don't know that and WON'T know it until Manning is in the rear view and Brock is on the field. Considering what a HUGE hole it will leave when Peyton leaves, just in terms of leadership and experience, I think we need to be all in and get to watch our team win the big one before he retires.

Now having said that?...Again, as has been pointed out by others, I'm not talking going out and blowing a wad on one stud player. We need two -three starters either from the draft or FA. I would target MLB, DT, RG (unless Franklin moves inside then it would be RT) and possibly center. I don't know if we keep Koppen, but quite honestly I thought our line play improved when Walton went down and Koppen stepped in.

I just want us to be aggressive in our strategies for the next couple of years. No more waiting until FA is almost over and then picking up a few role players. I'd like to see at least one or two familiar names added to the roster. They don't have to be top tier, but definitely above average. For the draft? I wouldn't trade down any this year. I've read alot about how much of a mixed bag this years draft is, I don't want to be trading out of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd rounds. If anything I'd rather see us trade up into one of those rounds and add an extra high percentage pick. I just think this is sound strategy considering our window for winning the big game is probably only a 2-3 year window before we have to start rebuilding from the top again.

I think we stay the course. Pick up pieces we need in free agency but focus on grooming and keeping our own. Even with such a tight window with Manning this will leave us in a good place to keep being a contender post-manning.

If we aren't willing to spend the big bucks to win in the next 2 years, then why did we bring Peyton in?

Im not for throwing money away on has beens but we need to add talent to our roster. We have the base pieces, we just need role players and contributors. So by this logic, randy moss is a free agent. Is he more a head case than a contributor at this point? This is what the players are saying- http://bit.ly/14pObTh

I think we will know the answer (to the thread) by the end of this week.....give or take (a few days). The kid in me always loves the rumours and gossip and possibilities of us landing some quality talent, and making key moves to improve our chances. And this year, so far, we have been attached to a number of them, which may all be hot air.....but it's still exciting to me!!!

My gut tells me Elway's on a mission, though not of the Peyton Manning level, to add more value to this squad.....without breaking the bank. It's called managing the bank. Hey, maybe we'll keep quiet this year, until the draft, but I really believe we'll be involved in FA. The question.....how involved?

Go ahead call me a kid...........make that, old kid.

Football is such a team sport, grantland had an article on how smart teams do it, they don't target the top tier guys and insist on getting them regardless of the price, the wait things out and get players who are slightly below the top tier guys for 50% of the price. WIth the amount of injuries that teams get, depth is just as important as the front-line players at times.

Unfortunately, the Broncos with Manning is reminiscent of Montana with KC and Farve with Min. Teams that draft well and grow young talent from within proven systems run the table versus bi-polar franchises who hope to fix holes with broken players and a revolving door of coaching personnel. Manning played well enough and the Broncos can continue to hold the AFC West but there is a serious trend within this organization of screwing up the draft and trying to fix it with retreds. Will the Broncos hold the AFC..hopefully! Will the Broncos win the Super Bowl..not likely! We will never be more sure than we were last year, it was the closest thing to a guarantee we could have had and it was pissed away.

I really didn't want them to splurge in FA but it's tough to complain now. I think we have made some very good moves. Now lets hope we can find a way to keep Doom.
