Either through free agency or the draft, the Broncos will try to add a starting right cornerback this offseason. And maybe one more cornerback for either depth or a developmental purposes.
Cornerback is a must because Tracy Porter will leave as an unrestricted free agent. He signed a one-year, $4 million deal last year but because of unexpected seizure complications, he didn’t work out. Because Porter and Drayton Florence, who the Broncos cut in training camp even though they paid him a guaranteed $3 million, didn’t come through as planned, the Broncos were forced to start Chris Harris at right corner and insert Tony Carter in nickel situations.
Those two were incredible for three to six games, but eventually both were asked to play above their means. Carter is an exclusive rights free agent, which means he can be re-signed at minimial cost. The Broncos also have Omar Bolden coming off his rookie year and while his playing time should increase in 2013, he probably needs one more year before he’s ready to become a trusted starter.
Harris is an ideal nickel — he might even be one of the top 5 nickel backs in the NFL. But he’s not ideally suited for the outside. In fact, Carter played outside at right corner while Harris slid inside to nickel on passing downs.
So the Broncos need a starting right corner. And they need to be mindful that Champ Bailey will turn 35 in June. Given the playoff game against Baltimore, Bailey may either need a little more safety help in 2013, or back off some from his one-on-one press converage.
Age at one corner, no one at the other corner is why the Broncos will be looking for cornerback help this offseason.
