  • Broncos position of need: Cornerbacks

Either through free agency or the draft, the Broncos will try to add a starting right cornerback this offseason. And maybe one more cornerback for either depth or a developmental purposes.

Cornerback is a must because Tracy Porter will leave as an unrestricted free agent. He signed a one-year, $4 million deal last year but because of unexpected seizure complications, he didn’t work out. Because Porter and Drayton Florence, who the Broncos cut in training camp even though they paid him a guaranteed $3 million, didn’t come through as planned, the Broncos were forced to start Chris Harris at right corner and insert Tony Carter in nickel situations.

Those two were incredible for three to six games, but eventually both were asked to play above their means. Carter is an exclusive rights free agent, which means he can be re-signed at minimial cost. The Broncos also have Omar Bolden coming off his rookie year and while his playing time should increase in 2013, he probably needs one more year before he’s ready to become a trusted starter.

Harris is an ideal nickel — he might even be one of the top 5 nickel backs in the NFL. But he’s not ideally suited for the outside. In fact, Carter played outside at right corner while Harris slid inside to nickel on passing downs.

So the Broncos need a starting right corner. And they need to be mindful that Champ Bailey will turn 35 in June. Given the playoff game against Baltimore, Bailey may either need a little more safety help in 2013, or back off some from his one-on-one press converage.

Age at one corner, no one at the other corner is why the Broncos will be looking for cornerback help this offseason.

If the Broncos add a CB this year there are only 2 I would love. Desmond Trufant and Darrelle Revis.

Chris Harris played "above his means"?

      I'm sorry but that's baloney.

I would be ecstatic if we drafted Johnthan Banks or Desmond Trufant! I also think BW Webb, Leon McFadden, and Robert Alford are good mid-round options.

We should keep Champ at CB. He is still one of the better cover CBs in this league. When Champ is done, I think a Banks/Trufant, Harris, Carter, and Bolden lineup at CB is one of the most promising in the league.

IMO, Chris Harris did a great job all season-long against his matchups. Harris didn't give up any catches in the BAL game. Harris is probably our best cover CB on this team now.

This article is sort of bogus. Both Carter and Harris played very very well for us all season. Another knee jerk reaction to one bad game against Flacco. We were ranked number 3 in both pass and rush defense

I doubt they will do it, but I still believe Harris would be a top 5 FS. His range and reaction sjills are great, and he is a sure tackler. I see a lot of the same skill set as Indy FS Bethea, maybe not as fast. Suggested moving him to S last year. I have said in another thread, Moore has an aggressive play style that may see him move to SS.

That would really create a void at CB tho with us needing to grab 2-3 this off season, but I do think we would have two stellar safeties that we could hide coverages with.

Completely agree, Chris Harris is extremely underrated ...I like him better in the slot as well but he was excellent anywhere all year

Tony Carter also did a great job ...

Article has some valid points but unless we add someone really good, we should keep the same cornerback system we had last year, it gave QB's fits all year...BAL was one bad game (mainly by Champ) which is extremely rare but so was that ridiculous cold

Chris Harris is a good #2 corner, but he is an outstanding nickel/slot corner. It would be our advantage if we were able to keep him as the #3 guy.

Harris was the best corner on the whole team last season and will get better... why would you want to replace him and stick him in the nickel? It's a complete waste of his talents.

If we are to draft a corner early it would be to replace Champ not Harris.

I was saying the same thing last offseason when people were trying to cap him as a NB only. I definately made it known that I think Harris would be a very good #2, and if we choose to bring someone in (which ended up being Porter) Harris needs to be starting at Safety. He's just to good to not be a starter.

Not this year...you just made a kneejerk reaction as well

Champ went against #1's all year last year on an island...sorry but Harris can't do that

I love Chris Harris, he's a great talent, but he's an ideal nickel back, and a very good #2 ...so many ppl take what Champ does for granted

He had a bad game ...(also could've been given offensive PI on both touchdowns when I rewatched them) ...but that doesn't discredit his whole season before that

Replace him in a few years, yeah, but not right now

Chris Harris's best attribute is press man-man coverage

That completely leaves as an FS, why would we do that?

I really do not see this as a weakness at all.......Champ is still solid... He still gets the job done better than all but a handful of other CB's. Harris played awesome...But I think another year or 2 is needed before he is ready. With Carter and Bolden I think we have solid depth....... Now if you want to talk S....Then there is a weakness. But DT, MLB, and S are the real need positions on this D
