  • Flowda's Pre-Combine Mock Offseason

This mock is what I would do if I was the GM of the Denver Broncos. I have givien this a lot of thought. I know this may come with some flaming and harsh critisisms, but I think this would benefit us greatly in the future, as well as right now! I think this team currently has a lot of talent on it, and we are big favorites to make a push for the championship next season. I say if any year is a big year to take chances, this is our year. Without further hesitations:

    Free Agency:

    Franchise Tag LT Ryan Clady
    Restructure RG Chris Kuper
    Restructure DE Champ Bailey
Sign CB Dominic Rogers-Cromartie: He could learn alot opposite Champ and I truly believe this would raise his play.
Sign DE Dwight Freeney: Adding another pass rusher is a great idea. If we can have Doom, Miller, and Freeney on the field at the same time, that is ideal.
Sign S Charles Woodson: Yes we are adding some age to the mix, but Woodson can still ball. He could guide Moore along as well. Both Champ and Woodson would be a headache for offenses with our pass rush.
Sign WR Austin Collie: This is a low risk, high reward signing. He would come cheap given his injury history. He has the Colt connection and I am sure Manning would vouche for him.
    Cut Joe Mays
    Cut Willis McGahee

    Draft:
*TRADE* The Denver Broncos trade up into the top 12 for DT Shariff Floyd Florida.
    - We will lose the our 1st, 2nd, and 5th picks this year. I think Floyd is a special player, and we need that at the DT position. We have been saying for years "we need a disruptive DT to collapse the pocket". This is our guy IMO. He has a motor and can rush the passer from the DT spot. With our edge rushers coming in the form of Miller, Doom, and Freeney, Floyd will create havoc up the middle.

3rd round - OG Alvin Bailey Arkansas - We need OG depth badly. Kuper is a question mark with his health, and Ramirez was very inconsistent as a backup. Gaurd is a big need for this team IMO.

4th round - RB Mike Gillislee Florida - I think we should cut McGahee due to past injury history. He is also due a good amount of money as well. I think a rotation of Gillislee, Moreno, Hillman, and Ball is fine.

6th round - Denard Robinson Michigan - I would like to get a solid slot WR in this draft. I view Robinson as that guy.

7th round - ILB Vince Williams Florida State - I like the idea of letting Irving and Johnson compete for the starting MLB position. I also want to add Vince Williams into the mix. He showed flashes of great play at the Senior Bowl and I would take a late flier on him.

DRC would be a nice signing, but not a fan of bringing Freeny in. I would like to see us get more rush from the opposite side of Doom on the line and allow Wolfe to be more flexible but Freeny is really getting up there in years. I would prefer to draft someone early. If you want us to trade up that's what I would hope it would be for, a pass rusher.

The rest doesn't look that bad to me. Adding a guard early is probably in the plans. I think Robinson could be effective as a receiver in the league.

I just think Freeney would come cheap and a great rotational player. He could give Doom or Von rest as well as play on 3rd downs.

I know that we don't have enough cap to make these signings, I think you need to pick 1 big name an go from there.

It'll be interesting how much of a pay cut Bailey would take to play DE though.

I can't complain about the draft. Personally I like Richardson over Floyd unless you are expecting him to go top 10. Bailey is an intriguing guy to me. He made an awful decision to declare, but to me that doesn't make him an awful player.

Like TDN, i don't see how in the world we'd fit all those players under the cap.

And like JJ, i think Floyd is going to sky-rocket ala like Poe/Cox did last year.

We MIGHT be able to sign one of DRC, Freeney, Woodson to go with Collie, don't see how we can get all 4. Besides, it's best to not to go all-in and be in cap hell in a few years.

DRC is going to want top money but if he comes at a descent price its not a bad pickup though he scares me a little with the yr he had last season, freeney as a rotational guy would be great on passing downs. i am not sold on austin collie i think he is done, concussions and injuries its over for him imo. the draft actually looks pretty good except for denard robinson he is a bit of a project at wr i would much rather have a more established wr in the draft but i love the rest of it

First of all, for us to trade up that high would probably cost us two #1's plus two #2's plus perhaps, a good player.
For years we signed expensive FA's and got very few that returned their value to us. we can do better, IMO, signing less expensive FA to one year contracts and continue to build our team through the draft. Manning was the only big named FA we have signed since Dawkins that earned his money. We are in a deep draft where we can get good depth in every round and we have very few "need" positions right now. We will see who comes out of the combine and we never know, someone very good may fall to us at #28.

I think this took credibility away from everything else. You may be the only person that wants to pay this 'has-been' $5-7-Mil on a one-year 'show me' deal. The rest of it does not matter because you just blew your salary cap money on a has-been.

I didnt say anything about money. I am not a capologist so I leave money out. I think all of the guys I put will come for less due to age/injury. I think Freeney comes cheap also because of a discount to play with Manning.

Is Shariff Floyd a special pass rusher? With 4.5 sacks in 3 seasons? 3 sacks, 13 tackles for loss as a DT in 2012. Derel Wolfe: 9.5 sacks, 21.5 tackles for loss in 2011. I'm not saying Floyd isn't a good player, but it would be crazy to burn a 2nd round pick + a 5th to get this guy. He was not a game changer in college. A good DT, but not a special one, and he is not a pass rusher.

If you can find anything special, tell me where it is. He is strong, has some versatility playing DE/DT, but he did not dominate the line of scrimmage and needs to learn more moves. And I would be very afraid of drafting defensive linemen from Florida because these guys don't like to work in the NFL.

Sorry, I don't like anything about this. No to Freeney, he hasn't done anything in two years. We aren't signing RDC because he's going to command Champ money and it doesn't make sense to have that much money in the CB position given Fox's/Del Rio's defense. It's a deep draft at DT, there's no way they are moving up. Woodson might be worth the money, but I don't know if they are giving up on Moore yet.

Moore plays FS. Woodson would play SS. Freeney didnt play well in a 34. He would be rotational in our 43. DRC had a rough 2 years and may come cheaper.

The only thing I can agree with you on is Woodson and maybe Collie. I have a much different opinion everything else other than Clady.

I believe I read somewhere that Champ's 2013 is guaranteed, so, no opportunity for restructure there. I also believe Kuper will be released. There are too many worthwhile FA's to replace him. If you are following other websites, you may have read there is a lot of opinions about whether or not the Broncos will keep him; so I am not sure why you opine you would restructure him.

If anyone's salary needs restructuring, it is Manning! Next year he will make $20-Mil and he has not won a playoff game. What is he going to do? Go somewhere else?

I guess I'd fire you as GM because if you didnt know one of the greatest of all time at his position in Champ Bailey is a CB and not a DE you have no business in football.
