  • Trading out of 1st

I've seen a lot of people post mocks (including myself) of us taking DEs, DTs, and CBs with our first pick.

So why not Matt Elam? He is a strong safety, who fills a need on our defense and is a solid all around player. Mike Adams is in his contract year, plus he's old; Quinton Carter has legal issues that may get him in a lot of trouble also coming off a season ending injury.

    Thoughts?

I think a safety will be drafted but I just don't see one in the first. I really can't help but think we trade back and grab a DT and DE in the second. We have one of the best secondaries already and if we can add more pressure we will be the top defense in football

Two years ago, we Drafted 2 Safeties. I just can't see Elway going there again. Just like I don't see a QB or TE being addressed, again. Or an MLB, for that matter.

And if Perrish Fox can get out of the legal troubles he was in, and I believe we all remember what that was, then Quinton Carter will get something worked out with his comparatively minor offense.

I just don't see a real weakness at safety. Moore is up and coming and Adams is average, we could be much worse off. I would love to get cooper Taylor in the later rounds though

I think that once Adams is ready to leave that Champ will be about ready to move to safety!
I really think that if Denver can get a good running back that this offense can be almost unstoppable! I would not be surprised if Denver trades back into the second round (if they can find a trading pardner) but I think RB will be drafted in the first two rounds and probably the first player Denver drafts.
BTW, I would love to see the Broncos draft Cooper Taylor also! Also John Simon DE from Ohio State!

A handful of players I'd like to see if we trade back into the second
            John Jenkins
            John Simon
            Leveon bell
Fill in the blank in the middle rounds than I'd like to see cooper Taylor in the 6th

Eric Reid or Matt Elam in the first. Id be really happy I thin safety is a huge need for us.

My biggest gripe with Elam is he can get straight abused by TE's and outside of that, he still shows little improvement in wrapping up. The amount of missed tackles he has because of going for the big hits can be absurd at times. If he would just wrap up, he would be great. It's frustrating to see, but he's an emotional big play player in the run game. I just really wish he took better angles and would wrap up as the last line of defense.

I don't think Bailey will ever move to safety. Maybe he will not even stay with the Broncos next year because of the salary cap. Some key young players need new contracts and the cap is getting tighter and tighter. Bailey will have a $9 million salary and will be 36 years old before the 2014 season begins. Clady needs a new contract. Decker needs a new contract. Woodyard will also be a free agent. Von Miller will be paid like a QB. I'd take any of them over Bailey at this point. They are the young core that will keep getting better and contribute for many years.

Speaking of safeties, I still think the Broncos need a safety that can cover TEs and make interceptions. Playmaker, ball-hawk, whatever. The team has guys that can make tackles but it's not pretty when the ball is in the air.

I like the idea of a safety...but not a SS. We need a guy that can play center field and make plays on the ball....One thing is clear Moore can do neither

Elam will be drafted in Day 2, I think he might even still be there when we pick in the 2nd.

To me Vacarro is the only one worthy of a 1st round pick. Cyprien might slip in, but I think the depth at DE and OL will make all other players slip.

Is it wrong of me to like Swearinger more?

                            This.
Elam has just enough big splash plays to cover up the fact that he's not very good the rest of the time.

Rashaan Melvin, Northern Illinois - CB, True Sleeper

I have not seen any of his games, but as I go deeper into the draft and looking for sleepers this person really stands out.

Anyone seen him play much or know much about him ?

He's projected to go 7 at best. He's 6-2, 192 and ran a 4.42 on his pro day. 38 inch vertical.

Interesting player with prototypical physical characteristics and length for the position, which is made even more enticing when factoring in instincts and football IQ.

Has some warts and quickness out of breaks is concern, but can't deny upside and fits profile as potential steal on Day 3. Will earn keep on special teams at first and has skills to eventually crack starting lineup in base defense.

Have only heard good things about his character, has been described as "wise."

Rashaan Melvin has the size to be a first round pick, he plays extremely well at corner back and has the stats to prove he is worthy. So my question is WHY, is this 6’2 corner back getting over looked? Rashaan tallied 173 tackles, 31 pass breakups and 6 interceptions in three seasons with the Huskies.

He is very physical and stays in the face of his competitors. They don’t have a section at Northern Illinois called “Melvin Island” for nothing, this kid is a shut down corner, and will definitely get looks from NFL teams. Keep an eye on this stud corner back, who walked on to NIU.
