Or we could just sit tight to see how our pash rush dynamic develops with Von Miller coming back into the lineup and sign Jared Allen this offseason as a free agent and not give up anything to get him....

I just don't see us giving up a draft pick for a player in the last year of his deal who is widely perceived not to have an offer coming from his current team.

        Nothing more than a 2nd.

But honestly a 3rd rounder should do the trick.

The same Jared Allen that got handled by by a 4th round rookie tackle last night? I wouldn't do the Vikings a favor and take that salary off their hands for an over the hill player.

The fact that he is at this point a 1/2 year rental makes him worth no more than a 4th round pick IMO. It would be simply foolish to offer a more valuable pick than that for 8-12 games of production. We likely wouldn't have the cap space to sign him beyond that, nor would it even be wise considering his age.

Has the "1/2 yr rental" thing ever been done in the NFL? It's obviously an institution in baseball since any player can play on any team immediately (no systems to learn). I can't recall any midseason trades for a team to acquire a guy for simply the remainder of that year.

The Packers did a great job at getting the ball out pretty quickly last night, and even when they didn't Rodgers was able to get out of the pocket.

The biggest reason Jared Allen struggled was the lack of 3rd and longs or even 3rd and mediums last night. It almost seemed like every time the Packers had a 3rd down it was very short. Packers were rarely in must passing downs.

It is quite nice that the trade deadline lands during our Bye Week. He'd have plenty of time to get settled in.

Good point. I happen to think we should avoid him unless the deal is too good to pass up. Allen is a great pass rusher, but I wouldn't trade him for any of our young studs we need to re-sign.

I personally think a 3rd round pick for Jared Allen and Minnesota eating enough of his contract for him to fit under our cap would definitely be worth it.

Even if he elects for FA next season obviously a possible Super Bowl victory would make the trade worth it.

Von / Malik Jackson / Shaun Phillips / Jared Allen
3rd downs would be an absolute nightmare for Alex Smith and every other QB we'll face this year.

Honestly dont think hes much of an upgrade over what we have now.

A 4th and maybe a player is the most i'd go.

Not trading a top 3 pick for a guy we'll have for 1/2 a year given the guys we need to keep at seasons end.

The third we would likely have to give up will be in the 75+ range. I would do that all day if it helps us have a better shot at the Championship. We dont have a ton of holes to fill and were lucky enough to have the luxury of being a targeted FA destination. If its only a temporary signing so be it....he could add a lot to our defense right now. We dont have a ton of time with Manning- and being our best in that small window is more important than setting ourselves up for a few years later.
We have a good mix of youth and vets right now..."losing" a 3rd would have little effect on our future. Especially when you factor in compensatory picks we might get by FAs leaving. (if any do)

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here, but how would acquiring an expiring contract affect if we keep guys at season end?

I think it'd be easier to re-sign our guys if we have a chance at defending a Super Bowl title.

Well considering the fact the only way we could fit him onto our team was with a contract restructuring and thus an extension we would be preventing ourselves from signing anyone else

Everything I have read says we have about 10M in cap space. We would only have to pay the remaining 7M on his ccontract for his services this year. With that said, I think he would be a good investment for the remainder of the season/post season. You need a pass rush in the playoffs, and we havent had a great outing yet this year. Allen would instantly provide and upgrade, not to mention much needed depth.
