While PFM sat out of practice today was he in the building with Elway, possibly fiddling with his contract in case we actually land Jared Allen?
I'm sure he'd re-do his deal if they asked him too, he might have to at the end of the year with some key guys due new deals.

Why does the trade/draft pick bother you so much?
We are in the midst of contending for a SB....we have no idea what the future seasons will look like, but right now Jared Allen could help us become even more dangerous.

An unknown commodity(draft pick) on a future team is more valuable when you have desperate needs to fill.....we arent in that position. The way I look at it is we would essentially upgrade the defense and trade the 3rd for Robert Ayers. (as Ayers would be moved to depth-likely the same position our future 3rd pick would be)

@adbrandt: For example, @Vikings could give Allen an immediate bonus of, say, $3 million and trade remaining $4.6 million. It has been done.

Yup. Definitely something cooking at Dove Valley. We'll see. Trade deadline one hour away.

People like me who are worried about this have the following concerns.

              1) Good teams that are elite for many years at a time (packers, ravens, etc...) don't make monster splashes like this in FA and give up picks to rent guys for 8 weeks.
              2) We have had great success as a franchise with our mid round picks.
              3) a Mid round pick can play for 4 years for peanuts where allen will command big $$$$ for 2 years maybe?
              4) We have a ton of FA this year that need to be signed. All of which are more important than Jarred Allen at this point to ou franchise. Would any of you give up Woody, Harris, Decker etc...? for JA? I wouldn't.

                  What Gsam said.

1- We have a lot of FA's, and a draft pick could replace one of them provided which ones we can and cannot sign.

2- No lock Allen re-ups with us.

3- Lot of great teams build through the draft. Crazy number i saw, GB has 50 of their 53 players from the draft.

4- I still stand by it he's not much of an upgrade for 8 games.

I'd prefer to keep our draft picks which are highly valued.

For a guy we may have for 8 games in the regular season.

How many other teams in the hunt for the SB like the Pats, Steelers, Ravens, Packers, etc in recent years trade draft picks for rentals?

                    It's whatever.

If it happens, i'll just have to support it.

Green Bay is unbelievable though, there hasn't been anything like that before. But even they have had made big moves to help them win a Super Bowl. Reggie White and Charles Woodson come to mind. (I understand they weren't rentals or mid-season acquisitions.)

GB is an outlier, they aren't the only way to be successful by any means.

This is coming down to a contract negotiation on both sides. Denver wants to make sure they can retain him. This is as real as real gets.

Ozzie newsome has been doing it just like ted thompson in green bay.

                          Those teams are perennial contenders.

1- Good teams that are elite for many years like you mention have had succesful and recent drafts....like us. Also whos to say he wont re-sign? We dont know what next years salary cap will look like and we dont know who might restructure...including Allen.
2- The draft is a crap shoot, no matter how the trends are in your teams history...some are good picks some are bad.
3- You are back in the mindset that we are a struggling team looking to fill holes....were not. We have a small window of time to capitalize. Were already young and we have depth...look at how hard it is to figure who might get cut or be inactive each game.
4- As for the FAs *if* we were to somehow lose any of those guys you mentioned, we would be eligible for compensatory picks (and likely get back the 3rd soooo many people are attached to)

The FA signings we need to make is not as big an issue as some people make it out to be. Look at our team this year, we assembled a great team with cap room to spare. Of course Woodyard, Decker, and Harris would need to be factored into next years cap (which is larger BTW) but there could be some creative salary cap work and restructuring done...it happens all the time.
