Bills unlikely to tag Byrd

1. I think this is why they call this time of year the "Season of Lies". Someone posted in another thread, with a news link, I think just Thursday how he was going to be a Bill. Course I do not think they actually read the part that said both sides were millions apart but the rest of the story did seem to indicate he was going to be a Bill one way or another.
2. We should pay him. People say he is one of the best cover safeties in the NFL with good ball skills. He is a playmaker in the passing game. We got the cap room...we have allot more cap room we could get by cutting players who did not play that big a role last year. The only way I personally would not pay him is if it stopped us from improving our pass rush. You could put HoF players in the backfield...if any QB in the NFL is not feeling pressure they will tear up the defense.
Like I said before...I would cut champ and give him Champs money. Forget about Champ to safety...get a proven playmaker. See Champ threads to read more on that.
3. If we sign him there goes another year down the hole for those who wish we could get comp picks lol...I personally would take Byrd over a late 3rdLast edited by Hadez; 03-02-2014, 10:48 AM.Skill + Effort = Talent. Talent + Effort = Achievement. A. Duckworth - Grit.

The cut champ and give him. His money part I posted somewhere else and totally agree. That makes a huge upgrade there. Duke can be depth or if he improves compete with Rahim for the other spot. DRC (hopefully) and Harris makes for a secondary that would be just fine even with an average pass rushsigpic

I would be in favor of the idea it would greatly bolster an area of need..
It would also appear to free up the Broncos from having to address the position in the draft even though it could still be an option..Could be the difference in drafting a WR,OL early in the draft ..
1 DE,CB
2 S,WR,OL

According to Rapoport, Byrd rejected an offer from the Bills that would've made him the highest-paid safety in the NFL for a portion of the deal
I agree do not sign him if it hurts our ability to improve the pass rush. It sounds like all the expensive pass rush options will not be available though...only the guys wanting to be overpaid because the truly elite options never made it to free agency. If this happens...like last year...it may take the 2nd and 3rd tier guys a while to realize they are not worth what they think they are worth...by then Byrd will be gone.
Elway and Co has done a great job since he got here...I trust he will keep it up.Skill + Effort = Talent. Talent + Effort = Achievement. A. Duckworth - Grit.

Not sure exactly what this means...I could speculate allot. I know it seems allot of contracts have low base salaries early and backload the contract so that the team could still cut a guy before he gets his "highest paid in the NFL" portion of the contract but who knows...maybe the Bills offered it the other way around and he rejected it...who knows.

WGR 550 Buffalo reports the Bills are unlikely to re-sign or use the franchise tag on free agent FS Jairus Byrd.
"The two sides have had productive discussions, and while things could change, it seems at this point that the two sides will split," writes WGR's Jeremy White. White's colleague, Joe Buscaglia, is arguably the top Bills beat reporter and adds that the club "explored all their options, including a trade." GM Doug Whaley shot a "substantial offer" Byrd's way -- reportedly one that would've made him the NFL's highest-paid safety in the first two seasons -- but the 27-year-old seems intent on testing the market. The franchise tag deadline is Monday at 4PM ET. Byrd is the top free-agent safety available.
The highest paid safety per year is around 8-9 mil a year.
So you do the math.
He wants an insane deal, as good as he is, it wont matter if there is no pass rush.
Besides, we need a SS, not a FS anyway which Byrd is.

you said "deal that would have made him one of the highest paid safties in the NFL."
He turned down a deal that only a portion of the deal would have made him the highest paid...he may want a mega deal like you suggest...he may not want his money backloaded so that a team can release him before he has a chance to earn it.
Neither of us knows what it was at this point
edit appartently this is from a CBS link I will get shortly
Their latest offer would have made him one of the top paid safeties in the NFL within the first two years of the deal, but he turned it down.
I also notice he played college (Oregon) and was born (SD) on the West Coast...maybe he feels the money is not worth playing on the East Coast. Maybe the Raiders lol?Last edited by Hadez; 03-02-2014, 11:31 AM.Skill + Effort = Talent. Talent + Effort = Achievement. A. Duckworth - Grit.

Buffalo offered him a huge contract, say 9 mil a year, his agent wants more.
Den isnt getting into a bidding war for him.
Was hoping he just hated Buff but the more that comes out the more it seems the guy wants to hit the lottery
Can not blame him...we want guys whose main focus is winning a ring thoSkill + Effort = Talent. Talent + Effort = Achievement. A. Duckworth - Grit.
