I've often said that the offseason can sometimes be almost as exciting as the actual season. NOT QUITE, but pretty fun at times. Following are the key dates for important activities ahead (including the combine, that recently occured):
Feb. 19-25 — NFL scouting combine, Indianapolis.
March 3 — Deadline for clubs to designate franchise or transition players.
March 8 — Clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with certified agents of players.
March 11 — All clubs must be under the 2014 salary cap; free agency begins; trading period begins.
March 23-26 — Owners meetings, Orlando, Fla.
April 7 — Clubs that hired a new head coach after the end of the 2013 regular season may begin offseason workout programs.
May 2 — Deadline for restricted free agents to sign offer sheets.
May 7 — Deadline for club to exercise right of first refusal for its restricted free agents.
May 8-10 —2014 NFL draft, New York.
As you can see, the next couple of weeks get really interesting, given the emphasis on franchising of players, and the entry into FA negotiations. There's even more going on, with the workouts for draftees. So as you can see, it not only shapes the FA process, but it's also a great time to get a better handle on the draft projections, as many players make their case for a job in the coming season.
I guess we have to be patient with a later draft, but when it gets here, I'll be extremely ready for it!
