  • IS DT for J Thomas trade feasable?

I was never for re-signing Thomas, would have preferred a tag and trade scenario similar to Jared Allen trade,; however, what is done is done.

I know we almost acquired Thomas at the deadline, do you think the Browns (who could use a WR) would go straight up on a trade of DT for Thomas?

    Here are the cap implications:

DT would count as 25MM on our cap this year and Thomas 8.8MM, so it is a pretty hefty hit. If Manning, Clady, Ware, Colquitt, saves us 41MM, Talib restructure could save us another 3MM...so lets say we have 64MM room with the cap increase.

11MM hit on DT plus 9MM for Thomas and we are down to 44MM

    Wolfe 7
    MJ 7
    Os 6
    Miller 14
    Trev 5

That is 39MM, so we would need to maybe reduce the first year cap hit a little to make this work, say Wolfe, MJ, and Miller each have 2M less cap hit (we do more signing bonus and stretch it out and/or pay them a lot more in 2017). That would leave us with 11MM left over for Draft, emergency and maybe a couple smaller signings.

We also woul be in much better shape cap wise in years 2017-2020 with DT now off the books.

What is better for our team, DT or JT?

Edit: Oh, and frees us up to extend Sanders

This is another one of those, "How selfish can we be?" Things. DT is having a down year and is still a top 10 WR in the league. I know some fans on here don't like to admit it but you have to pay your elite players that you've developed to win games.
A healthy Kenneth Dixon is a top 5 NFL RB.

I dont think you give up a player in his prime for a player going into the tail end of his career, no matter how good he is.

So doing whats best for the franchise is now selfish?

This is a valid point, but I think that has to do with cost of player:

Trading DT clears 38MM from future payroll
            Acquiring JT adds 26MM

So you do creat a net surplus of 12MM . JT just turned 31, so you are gewtting his age 31-33 years. How much decline would we see by age 33. A little? None?

Trading away 2 first round picks vs DT...it all seems debatable.

IMO you stick with DT. He is better for the team if they can build a solid o-line and get the ball to him on a regular basis. DT eliminating some drops would help too. DT is an elite WR threat despite all the complaints otherwise.

O-line will be improved this off-season. Also think that next season the Broncos will add a FB and incorporate 2 TE sets to help the blocking consistency. Maybe not J. Thomas but a definite overall upgrade over this year should be feasible.

If John Elway (or any GM) makes a move that results in an immediate $34.1 million cap hit (unless they're front loading a contract because of massive cap room) they should be fired on the spot. No this move is not feasible in any way.

Football is so much different than baseball. Where you will see a team give a guy a huge contract and turn around and eat money to move contract in a trade. We do not see it in football all that often, if at all.

If the question was two 1st round picks for JT, then the question could be, "how much are 2 1st round picks worth?"

I am not saying it is worth doing or we should do it. Just had the though pop into my head. If there was no cap hit, would we do the trade? How big of a difference is the 11M cap hit? Most likely too much of a hit when I think about it. DT's value will be about the same in 2017 when there is no cap hit for trading him.

Lol, so paying a consistent top 5-10 WR like a top 5-10 WR who is the most team first WR in the top 10 and has been a team captain is selfish?

DT isn't a top 10 WR this year.

                      Julio Jones
                      Marshall
                      Decker
                      Antonio Brown
                      ODB
                      Deandre Hopkins
                      Allen Robinson
                      Doug Baldwin
                      AJ Green
                      Allen Hurns

all had better years than DT. Not advocating to trade him but that's the truth. DT was not a top 10 WR this year unless you only look at yards gained.

With 113 receiving yards on Sunday, DT will become one of only 3 players to have 90+ catches 1300+ Yds 5+ TDs for 4 consecutive seasons other two being Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison. He will also pass Rod Smith for most 100 Yd games for Denver.

Well he's top 10 in yards, and receptions. He's well outside of the top 10 in scoring, however we've been anemic as a team at finding the endzone.

I would argue he's still top 10, but he's no longer the top 5 player he's been consistently since Manning got here. We'll see how he bounces back next year, but he is still a talented.

Honestly, he hasn't cracked 100 yards since week 8, I'm not sure I see him doing it this week.
