If Cam slips then you obviously grab the stud OT... but I don't see a OL worthy of our pick....

I'm not sure if there's a stud DL either that would be hard to pass on... but we need a young stud ILB and Cunningham is that guy.

Good players from Vanderbilt can often get lost in the mix of strong front-7 options in the SEC, but linebacker Zach Cunningham deserves national attention. The former four-star recruit has gained about 30 pounds since entering college while maintaining the athleticism that made him an attractive high school player. Still, Cunningham didn’t receive the big-time offers he probably deserved. Now at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, his size and athleticism compare favorably to the best SEC linebackers, and his on-field performance matches up just as well.

After playing 423 snaps as a redshirt freshman in 2014, Cunningham broke out in 2015 with a +21.9 overall grade that ranked 16th among the nation’s linebackers and third in the SEC. He graded positively in all three phases – against the run, in coverage, and as a pass rusher – with his work in the run game ranking second among SEC linebackers and his run stop percentage of 13.4 percent ranking sixth among the nation’s inside linebackers.

The first thing that stands out when watching Cunningham is his speed and physicality. When left unblocked, he flies to the ball and his strong closing speed puts him in position on a number of plays. Cunningham attacks blockers with vigor, aggressively using his hands to take on and defeat blocks in the run game. The athleticism shows up in coverage as well, as Cunningham has the range to make plays in zone coverage as well as the movement skills to match up with opposing tight ends and running backs. He uses his length to make plays on the ball in coverage, and that’s a part of his game that will make him an excellent NFL prospect as his understanding of the game continues to progress.

Cunningham shows his range and length in coverage:

    zach cunningham

Cunningham beats the block and makes the play in the run game:

    zach Cunningham 2

If there’s one place in which Cunningham must to improve, it’s his ability to finish plays and tackle. He’ll often attack ball carriers too high, leading to his falling off too many tackles or whiffing completely. Even when he does complete the tackle, he doesn’t finish with quite the same power that he shows when looking to take on blocks.

Cunningham whiffs on the easy tackle:

    Cunningham 3

Cunningham missed one of every 9.7 tackle attempts — 44th-best among inside linebackers — which is actually better than former Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith fared as a sophomore in 2014 when he missed one out of every 6.6 attempts. Smith improved his tackling as a junior before going down to injury and getting drafted in the second round by the Dallas Cowboys, and if Cunningham can make similar strides, he’ll put himself in great position to become an All-American and potentially a top-round draft choice.

With a strong showing as a redshirt sophomore, Cunningham has already attracted the NFL’s attention, it’s now time to take the next step in his game. He’s flashed range and play-making ability in coverage, and improving his play recognition will put him in position to make even more plays. Cunningham is a willing run defender, capable of taking on and defeating blocks, but he must improve his tackling and ability to finish plays. If he can continue to progress, Cunningham heads into the 2016 season as a potential All-American candidate and NFL scouts will be keeping a close eye on his development whether he comes out this year or in 2017.
OL is never fixed through FA. You can get a guy to fill a hole here and there sometimes but building a consistent Oline from almost scratch, is done through solid drafting. I read in here from several people...hit Oline hard in FA...who exactly are those targets? Ricky wagner might be a decent option but he is mid/lower tier OT...that's the kind of talent you get at Oline in FA...not the building blocks of the future. I believe they need to go Oline heavy at the top of the draft.

Right now, my picks would be Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wisconsin and Taylor Moton, G/OT, Western Michigan

I love Reuben Foster, special, special player but dont see anyway he falls to us.

      I like Cunningham too.

We do need another ILB though. Todd Davis isnt that good, Nelson more of a backup, havent seen enough of Anderson to judge. Marshall a stud of course, but need another guy there.

If Cam Robinson slips a little bit i'd make the move for him, plug and play guy right away.

But Elway's first pick has been on defense minus Lynch and he's had success with that minus Sly. Wolfe, Von, Ray, Roby all made impacts right away.

Raiders line was built through FA. Penn, KO, Hudson and Howard were all FA signings.

Theres some OL set to hit the market but its not a great class all in all.

Ramczyk had a surgery so i dont know how that effects his draft status since he cant work out for teams.

Penn and Howard were signed in 2014. Hudson in 2015. Osemele was signed in 2016. That was a three year project and is the exception, not the rule.

We drafted Paradis and Schofield. We acquired Okung through FA, and will likely get another LG and RT in FA. We will also likely draft a couple OL in the early middle rounds

Two problems with that. One, it's considered a weak draft for OL. Two, we don't have time to wait. We need immediate help. There is actually some good talent in FA. I would target both Whitworth and Zeitler from the Bengals. Both are rated as top 25 linemen by PFF. Whitworth would only be a stopgap, but so what? He should be better than Okung. Zeitler is still young and could be a fixture on the line for years. Add those two guys plus anyone but Stephenson and Sambrailo at RT and you've got the makings of a decent line.

I want Wagner at RT from Baltimore. I would just keep Okung, but at a lesser contract.

I agree but I don't advocate reaching for need early in drafts.... if Cam falls in our laps.... great.... we got our RT. If not, I wait for Dixon or the Wisc OT in the second round.

TJ Lang (OG from GB) could be a free agent acquisition.... then trade for Thomas or sign the LT from Cincy. Probably will have to live with okung for another season and hope Stephenson, Garcia, Schofield, Stephenson, TY or another young OL figure something out.

                  Okung-Lang-Paradis is a start.

To Me, replacing Danny T is a big need and the BPA philosophy matches this where we sit in the 1st

I dont think Wagner hits the market.

I dont think Okung would sign for cheaper if we declined the option.

For me, it's about Inside LBing, because we need to restore our run D, and a mid first rounder will be able to suit up and make an impact in year one. DTs take time.

Oline needs work, but there may not be an impact player available when we are picking.

Let him walk then. There is no way in a million years he has earned, or will get from anyone, that kind of money.

If he had any sense he would sign a one year prove it deal with Denver as he has a year in the system with these players, a home here, and is with a team who 'should' be a contender next season

He essentially did sign a one year prove it deal, and he didn't prove anything. Actually that's not true, he lasted 16 games, which he hasn't done much during his career.

But with a lot of teams needing to upgrade their o-line, a lot of cap room for these teams and not a huge wealth of talent available, he'll get a decent pay day from someone. Might even be Seattle, cause they need line help.

Thats kind of my point, he didn't prove he deserved a pay day.

If someone is stupid enough to give him a good contract then so be it.

I agree with you, I'd let him walk, because I don't think he's been good enough here, certainly not to keep him on his current contract. But I also don't think Denver has a chance of getting him back if they walk away from his contract, too many teams need o-linemen and are desperate.
