If we go defense in 1st round of 2018, what player should it be?

In no particular order, here are some guys we might consider.

1. Minkah Fitzpatrick- I know he's viewed as one of the tops DBs in the draft. Can he cover TEs and RBs, which seems to be our Achilles heel?

2. Da'ron Payne- Big, athletic NT. Can he rush the passer, though?

3. Bradley Chubb- Can never have too many pass rushers.

4. Arden Key- Ditto.

Any other big time players we should consider?

If we pick top 5 and Rosen and darnold are off the board I’m perfectly fine with going BPA and if that’s a defensive player I’m fine with that. Worst thing to do is reach for a QB (think 2011 draft). Most likely it would be Minkah Fitzpatrick. He can play both safety and corner and not only is it BPA but fills a need we are going to end up having. Stewart and talib are getting old and starting to look the part this might be talons last year with us and next year might be Stewart’s last.

Smith would be a good pick. I was thinking ILB too and Josh Allen is another name I would throw out there if he comes out early. agreed on it will be an offensive player though...most likely a QB.

I know in the draft teams should really "should" take the BPA (best player available), but a couple of our needs are so friggin' desperate and critical right now that we just can't afford to draft defense, not with the worst offense in the league!

I guess that depends on free agent signings too though. Playing the what if game, what if Denver somehow lands Cousins and Soldier as free agents? I could see taking Minkah seeing how Talib is probably on the verge of departing.

If we get a top five pick and the top QB is gone, I would like to see us trade down a few (6 or 7 picks or less) picks and get some extra picks for '18 and/or '19 and then get the BPA. Hopefully we can get a ILB and a OL in the first two rounds. We need to build our OL without hurting our defense.

Honestly, both Marshall and Davis need to be replaced. If we go D in round 1 it’s gotta be an ILB.

I don’t think Marshall needs to be replaced, I think he needs his Batman back at ILB. He looked great next to Trevathan having many people believe he was the better of the two. If Zach Brown or Avery Williamson hit the market they’d go great with Marshall. Bradham or Tahir Whitehead would be good as well.

Elway seems to shun ALA players.... I hear he fears they get burned out....

Anyway, this probably means we would draft Chubb or Key.

If we stay away from ALA players, and given our history of “devaluing” the ILB spot.... this leads me to believe we could go best pass rusher.

How would this happen? Say we sign Nate Soldier, then say Darnold and Rosen aren’t options.... DEN really has 3 choices:

Grab Nelson or Smith. This probably involves trading back and accumulating picks;

OR, we take a look at S- Barkley (if he comes out)

OR, we go with best pass rusher.

When you have a top 5 pick you want QB, OT, DL, or pass rusher.

Depending on what happens in free agency and who is on the board when we pick.....

Why couldn’t the pick be Chubb or Key?

There’s something to be said to keep your strength solid. Why be average on both sides of the ball?

Nate and Keenum plus Chubb?

Personally, if we avoid QB or OT, I prefer trading down and grabbing Nelson or Smith. Maybe stay and grab Barkley.
