  • Daniel Jeremiah's Mock Draft 1.0

The Browns, Jets, Dolphins and Redskins address the QB position in Daniel Jeremiah's first mock draft of the year. Have a look at his projection for the first round.

I respect DJ, and find his first mock interesting.

    Here's the top 10:

    1) Cleveland - Darnold (QB)
    2) NY Giants - Barkley (RB)
    3) Indy - Chubb (DE)
    4) Cleveland - Fitzpatrick (DB)
    5) Denver - Nelson (OG)
    6) NY Jets - Rosen (QB)
    7) Tampa - Davenport (DE)
    8) Chicago - Ward (CB)
    9) San Fran - Edmunds (LB)
    10) Oakland - R Smith (LB)

As for the other top QBs, he has Allen going to Miami at 11, and Mayfield to Washington at 13. most likely because Cousins moves on. I don't see Lamar Jackson in the first round.

Here's DJ's description of our pick...."I think the Broncos will address their quarterback need in free agency, which would free them up to take the best available player in this spot. Nelson is the best interior O-line prospect to enter the draft in a long time."

DJ admits that Miami's choice would surprise, but may be time to move on from Tannehill.

As for Washington: "The Redskins have a big decision to make with Kirk Cousins. If they decided to move on from him, Mayfield would be a perfect fit in this system."

So....DJ likes Darnold for Cleveland. I get a sense that this QB group will be a steady discussion til draft week. And as for us, landing a quality QB in FA works for me, but I am not sure about pick #5. So many options, including trading down. Can't wait for FA to get the ball rolling!!!

There are a couple of scenario's that I would be comfortable with. If Denver is the team that lands Cousins and they want to stay at 5 to take a player I would be more comfortable taking Fitzpatrick. I like Nelson too but I do think there are other G's that can help and do a good job. Minkah is a guy that doesn't come around very often and Denver probably won't have a chance at a guy like this again.

Fitzpatrick sounds like a can't miss prospect. I really think Cleveland has him in their crosshairs. So that would make a deal for us a little more expensive than we might like, given we need offensive players to make an impact, relatively soon. Of course none of what I say matters...especially given we never know what Elway might do in FA.

But this is why I love the offseason....so many variables at work!!

I like it (assuming that QB added is Cousins), but I think Allen will surprise, he might go 1st. As for Nelson, can he play tackle? Would people be more accepting of him if Denver drafted him to play RT? Just curious. They have a big hole at guard that needs to be filled, along with the one at RT, so drafting someone to fix either one is fine with me.

If we can get Cousins in FA I wouldn't mind taking the best Oline prospect at 5. However I also think if the draft falls something similar to what DJ projects, with only 1 QB taken before us, we should be able to get some offers from the likes of Arizona, Buffalo, or Was. Heck even the Jets might flip us some mid round picks to ensure no one jumps ahead of them to grab a QB they want.

I think you hit on a very interesting consideration.....because OTs are so much more loved early on, than OGs. Funny thing, when I was fairly young (long, long time ago), Guards were the cool Oliners to acquire. They were the quick, actively involved players, while OTs were usually "big". As QBs gained value, given we are in a QB driven league, and edge rushers took on a higher level profile, those "big" dudes became more and more important....typically the LT, given he is the QB back-sider. I am not stating anything new here, and there are other variables in play, but I use it in light of the comment you make.

I am quite sure if you look at the last decade or two, you will see that OTs are by a large gap, the go to selection over OG....in the early part of the draft.

With such a high pick and assuming a FA QB is signed, I could see Elway trading back a few spots to pick up another 2nd. That would give him a 1st, 2-2nds and 3-3rds (with the comp pick from Okung).

That is 6- picks in the first 3-rounds and even with Elway's terrible draft record at least a couple of those would have to be winners. I like this big numbers approach because it gives Elway more room to mess up and just by bigger numbers increases the odds.

This is my first choice....as long as we acquire a good QB in FA. We can turn that one pick into at least 2 really good picks, maybe 3. And we can use them as we feel best, need or BPA.

Heck, even if we could move one space back to the Jets and gain a 3rd and a 4th like the 49ers got that’d be awesome.

This would be my ideal scenario. If we land Kirk in FA, I'd start floating the rumor of perhaps a deal to buffalo. Get the jets panicking they will miss out on a QB, and drop down the single spot. Then we'd have the same group of players we'd have at 5, but with extra picks.
What's the difference between ignorance and apathy?

I would be fine with nelson... my towns namesake! Gotta be a good sign... but then RT NEEDS to be addressed with a big name in FA

And wasn’t McGovern pretty good to end the season at guard? Too bad there isn’t a Tackle in this draft worth that pick..

Agreed. Although my ideal scenario actually involves just this idea but a little more. Gain 2 or 3 extra picks. Then get Nelson. Use those extra picks to trade up in the middle of the first round. Then take McGlinchey or best offensive tackle. Then use our second or a gained second to draft Sony Michel. We then have an upgrade at qb (assuming Cousins), big upgrade at Guard, tackle, and an explosive rb. Although, I really hope we can upgrade at ILB in FA or the draft somewhere as well.

I am down with Cousins and some smoke and mirrors at 5. Imagine landing a quality Oliner, LBer and O weapon with our first few picks....hey, I would be fine with various scenarios that involve us trading back a wee bit. Heck, with a smart trade down outcome, we could land some big fish, and then even package a combination of 2's/3's to move up to land another!!!
