Unpopular Opinion: I'm actually really high on Kyle Lauletta, QB from Richmond. Quick release and has a Drew Brees esk feel to him when you watch his tape. Can easily be had in the 4th or 5th rd this yr and I'm fine with another QB comp since we don't even know what Chad Kelly is capable of at the next level. I'll sign Keenum/McCarron all day if our O-line is improved the next!
Names like Rosen, Allen, Darnold, and Mayfield are all around our discussions and I'm not sold* on any of them. I don't look at any of these supposed top 4 QBs and see someone that turns our O around in 3-5 years. No one "looks bad" in their highlight videos because they're just that, highlights. But what you can see are under thrown passes, plays where DBs just blow coverage, or missed tackles...In my humble opinion, Mayfield is the best possibility for the simple fact that:
Rosen - bad decision making and timing with WRs + takes too long to release. Tape has under thrown passes and WRs making plays for bad passes.
Allen - strong arm, sure, but watch his tape and you can count how many times he actually threw from the pocket, so terrible timing and relied on his arm to get him out of trouble.
Darnold - decision making and turnover issues are HUGE. 13 ints and 12 fumbles last yr (lost 9.) So if he wasn't even a rockstar through college, is he magically supposed to fix his turnover issues in the NFL??
Mayfield - worked through a spread O and never under center which for some reason makes people think these types of QBs go dumb under center. Over the other 3, he can at least extend plays with his feet and IMO, he's a better leader than the rest.
If Cousins isn't signed, draft Nelson at #5, sign Solder (crosses fingers,) Isaiah Oliver in the 2nd if he's there (or package back to get him,) and draft Lauletta in the 3rd/4th rd. Honestly, if our o-line is taken care of, I have no issue signing McCarron or Keenum. No matter whose under center next season though, if our o-line doesn't improve in a big way, they're going to struggle, Cousins included....
