  • The 5th slot contract

Will cost 18 mil (with signing bonus) and around 28 for 4 years. The radio is saying they won’t spend that kind of money on a guard

    Looking like a trade back

Looking like a runningback or quarterback.

So they won’t spend that kind of money on a guard. Why does that mean they are trading back? Chubb, Fitz, Barkley, or a QB could be avail at 5 and they might value that money as appropriate for those positions

Broncos don't need a guard. McGovern and Leary are just fine.

Didn’t they also give $9 mill per year to another guard Leary. I wonder how reliable that is.

That's the point. NFL teams don't invest big in 2 guards spots as it doesn't make sense when building a roster. This is one of the MANY reason why the Broncos are not drafting Nelson this year.

I don't see that stopping us from drafting Nelson. Take Nelson at 5 is obvious to me.

I think missing out on Nelson would be a Grave mistake or Barkley for that matter. I am no fan in trading down.

This is an interesting discussion. If Elway has saved money in free agency until this point, it means he is ready to make the pick at #5. If Elway were ready to trade down, he would have spent more money during free agency and take the best offer from the Dolphins, Bills or Cardinals.

Absolutely the Broncos will be picking at 5 or earlier and Elway is to smart to waste that pick on a guard.

If Denver acquired Buffalo's two 1st round picks wouldn't it be about the same?

I am not so sure about Elway being against Nelson. There is some urgency to get this o-line fixed and also add more attitude to the unit. Nelson can do both. I remember a report about Elway trying to get David DeCastro in the 1st round of the 2012 draft. If there was interest in a very good guard at the end of round 1, there might be interest in an all-time guard at the top of round 1. If the QB stays clean and the RB runs for 1,500 yards, it might be a worthy investment. Look at how much damage Max Garcia has done to this offense, how many plays have been ruined because Garcia gets destroyed in a hurry. The truth is that RT is a much bigger issue because the team at least has McGovern to play guard, while there is no one to play RT right now.

                          Last year's #5 pick:

                          77/29/2017: Signed a four-year, $25.39 million contract. The contract is fully guaranteed. The deal includes a fifth-year team option. 2018: $55,000 (+ $1.06 million roster bonus), 2019: $645,000 (+ $2.12 million roster bonus), 2020: $735,000 (+ $3.19 million roster bonus)
                          Last year's #12 and #22 picks:

                          5/12/2017: Signed a four-year, $13.854 million contract. The deal is fully guaranteed, including an $8.25 million signing bonus. 2018: $555,000, 2019: $862,249, 2020: $1.17 million
                          5/24/2017: Signed a four-year, $10.84 million contract. The deal contains $10.55 guaranteed, including a $6.02 million signing bonus. 2018: $957,908, 2019: $1.45 million, 2020: $1.94 million
Perhaps Elway knows the Bills want to go higher than #5 for the price of those two 1st-round picks and a trade would have to be made with either the Dolphins or Cardinals, so we'd get multiple 1st-round picks but not in this draft.

We spent 4 years 36 on Leary but we won’t spent the 4 28 on a guard who is projected to hit the ground running? More guards make over 7 mill than running backs make over 7 mill in the nfl right now. If Nelson is everything they say he is then he is worth the contract at the 5th spot.
