  • Why John Elway hasn't hit on a franchise quarterback......

Because he's looking for Elway 2.0 PHYSICALLY. What he NEEDS to be looking for is Elway 2.0 MENTALLY. He's stuck on height and arm strength and needs to find someone with heart. Tom Brady checked none of the boxes (except height), but if you watch his Michigan highlights, he sprints down the field after touchdowns, fist pumping, etc., desperate to win. Baker Mayfield, same thing, desperate to win. Mahomes, desperate to win. Haskins, Lock, same thing. I've said 2020 might be better suited to draft a QB, but if you watch the highlights, these boys are desperate to win and have a lot of skills.

Shouldn't he be looking for 6'3 QBs then? I don't remember Elway being a 6'6, 6'7 clumsy giraffe like Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch.

I would rather have a guy with an average skill set but a fire deep in his gut to be the best ever and to win.
Jay Cutler had all of the tools but a lazy approach and what could have been a great NFL career was mediocre because of it.
Brady and Manning have average to above average skill sets but their approach to the game is remarkable, that’s why they’re 2 of the greatest ever.
My new QB has to eat, sleep, and breathe football, be a leader of men, and be someone that will throw a franchise on their back when needed.
I think Grier has that, maybe Jones, I’m not sure about Haskins and Lock.

A lot has to do with getting lucky . You have your certain no brainer top picks . Most of the time they work out , but sometimes they dont. If everyone knew that Mahomes would be this good he would have went #1 . You just dont know the outcome. When a lot of scouts are high on Lynch that tells you something. That Lynch himself is the reason for flopping. Nothing is guaranteed. You just do due diligence in scouting and take a kid based on that . If he doesnt perform oh well onto the next . Every team out there is in search of the next great Qb.

i had mahomes as a second round QB cause the system he came out of . i was wrong. i am not he best at reading the offense i feel. i like defense and blitz packages and stuff. the tactics behinds the defense interests me. so i pay more attention to the defense then the offense.

I feel elway has looked for physical traits and thought he could teach them by being a HOF QB how to be a QB. teach them the mental side if they had the physical side. obviously you need things to suceed and elways Still smarter then most at least football IQ and readings defenses.

Congratulations on being SUPER SUPER literal. I meant physical skills. It's no big deal, anyone can disagree, but this feels like trolling.

Gas cost .89 when Elway was drafted. It's called inflation, or in this case, evolution. He was one of the taller, stronger QB's in the draft. The average height of almost every position has gone up. He should be looking for someone with heart.

Over drafting mediocre quarterback prospects out of desperation like some are advocating doing again this year. While at the same time failing to provide an environment for the young quarterbacks to thrive in and grow.

The only reach or over draft was Lynch and Elway wasn't the only GM that wanted him in the 1st. Brock was not an over draft, you can't put that label on a 2nd round pick. If Elway didn't someone else would have, that's not a knock on John.

Just because the QBs in this draft aren't your own personal favorites doesn't mean that they are going to bust. When was the last time this team drafted a QB inside the top 10? When was the last time Denver drafted one of the drafts period? Is it a reach if they do so this year? I say no because there is some darn good talent there and it happens to be the biggest need.

Or I was just making a little joke, without trolling. I personally don't feel Osweiler has great physical skills, certainly not a rocket arm; he's just tall and can move a litle bit [2.9 yards per carry].

One of the problems with Elway's QB search is that he never made an aggressive move for one of the top QBs in a draft class. He went after Osweiler in the 2nd round, when 4 QBs had already been taken in the 1st round, and then took Paxton Lynch at #26 [after multiple QB-needy teams passed on him] when other teams traded all the way up to the #1 and #2 spots to get Goff and Wentz.

Elway has never been in position to get one of the elite QB prospects in the draft. It looked like the Broncos had Mayfield and Darnold as their top QBs, but both were gone before the #5 pick. Josh Allen was a very controversial prospect, some even compared him to Paxton Lynch, and Josh Rosen also had some red flags that made him slide enough to become the 4th QB drafted in his class.

I believe when people say Elway and the Broncos' front office loved Wentz and Darnold, but those QBs were not available. If Elway wants to be in position to get one of these QBs, he needs to correctly identify the prospect along with his crew and then make an aggressive move in the draft.

As far as the 2018 draft, Denver had no shot at Mayfield. The Browns wanted him and weren't going to trade. No one was really sure what the Giants would do. Many thought they would take a QB. If Elway had beaten the Jets to the punch and traded for the #3 pick, he may have been out of luck. I suppose he could have tried. As far as 2016, Denver had the 31st pick that year. It would have taken a monumental haul of draft picks to move up to #1 or #2.

If there are one or two QB prospects he covets, he's in a decent position to draft one this year. Moving from #10 to the top two is feasible, especially considering his relationship with Lynch in Tampa Bay.

I am not saying they are going to bust, just that it's a mediocre group, obviously my opinion, but it is a widely shared opinion also, and for good reason. And not to be rude, but the guy who is now your personal favourite, you didn't want to even draft him a week ago after his bad performances, but now you have flipped back, NFL General Managers look at a lot more than just the outlier good games. By the way, those questions you asked, they're irrelevant to this conversation.

I think they are very relevant to this conversation.....considering the question is "why hasn't Elway hit on a QB".....maybe because he hasn't drafted one high enough

I think it would be relevant to the conversation this year if we were in the same position as a year ago, where you probably had a shot at 1 of 4 guys who were widely considered to be potential franchise quarterbacks. But this year you are sitting in a position where you are probably going to have a shot at a guy who everyone knows will only be pushed up the board due to need, and not due to their true skill.

When you look at the top of the draft teams already have their QBs, you think there won't be some trading going on? You have to get to number 6 before you get to a team that needs a QB. Just because Denver is at 10 means nothing to me in regards to them being out of any QBs reach
