  • Mason Foster released

Sounds like a no-brainer to me... especially with the Davis injury....

Vic said with 32 teams having 90 guys in camp... not really time to look to upgrade from without the org...

    Well, now.... with this news....

Go get him! He led WAS in tackles last year.

“For the last four seasons — other than 2017 (torn labrum) — Foster was a stalwart for the Redskins’ defense. He played over 13 games in three of the four and had two 120+ tackle campaigns to boot. The 30-year-old linebacker isn’t particularly proficient in stopping the pass — as his instincts and lack of speed prevail — but he’s one of the better run-stuffers in the NFL. He’s an outstanding blitzer, lives in the backfield, and can pass-rush. Now, the younger Jon Bostic stands as his replacement.”

I think this is the guy we passed on for Brock.

    Rotoworld:

    MASON FOSTER
    LB, UNSIGNED FREE AGENT

    Redskins released ILB Mason Foster.

Foster spent the past four seasons in Washington. He clashed with the coaching staff at times last year, so the timing of the release is a bigger surprise than him getting cut. Foster is coming off a solid 2018 and shouldn't struggle for free-agent interest.

We have 5.5m in cap space... I wonder what he'd be looking for.

Joe Jones a year ago killed it on special teams, and he has all the athletic ability in the world, he just hasn't played much football. Vic Fangio apparently is great with linebackers, and Jones is getting extended looks in camp, along with a bunch of other young guys. I am hoping we can have someone emerge at that position from within, I don't want to loan a mediocre 30 year old based off of his name. Although Elway has a track record of adding aging, once good linebackers around this time of year, for example Keith Brooking and Paris Lenon, both who walked in and started straight away, so I do see it as a potential option.

I don’t mind going with the youth movement but Mason Foster isn’t a mediocre ILB. He’s still an elite run-stuffer and blitzer. We need interior pass rush and Fangio (so i’ve heard) likes to blitz the ILB.

We have zero bodies at ILB, other than an injured Davis and a few green prospects.

I wouldn’t break the bank but if we added Mason to this defense.... wow!

Again, he’s not much in coverage.... but who is on our team anyway?

Mason would shut down the run, live in the backfield and be insurance just in case Davis is beset with injuries this season.

Oh, and maybe his experience makes him a leader... this young defense could use another Ware type vet presence.

“After signing Dalton Risner and Drew Lock, #Broncos have about $3.8 million in remaining salary cap space.“

We would need him to clear waivers and then offer him a vet min

Foster is a 2 down LB that sucks in coverage. it seems that's all we can put out there on game day. No thank you.

More simply, don’t we just need better ILB play, regardless. Foster better this season than Davis and Jewel, no?

If there are concerns about disruptions or chemistry... or salary... I get passing. But we have, arguably, worst ILB depth in NFL

i don't think you can say that for sure. plus he doesn't fix the coverage of TE. who si gonna cover Kelse and HEnry when we have two top 5 TE in the divison.

It would have to be someone already on the roster because LBers that can cover them aren’t available. Is Davis or Jewel better than Foster? I think Foster and Davis are a wash and I’m not high on Jewell at all much less trotting Jewell and Davis out at the same time

i just don't see the upgrade there. it is not what we need right now and we have 2 good run stopping lbers with limited coverage ability. why not add more?

Elway does not believe in Inside Line Backers. Our defense will be good this year. But not elite because we don’t have an ILB that would make another NFL roster.

I don't think that is fair to say of Elway, we really don't know that. I am one of Elways biggest critics, and yes, he hasn't ever spent any high draft capital on an inside linebacker, outside of maybe Nate Irving in the 3rd round who you could argue wasn't a huge commitment at that spot. But at the same time I think Elway has been smart not over drafting the position, or severely overpaying for it in free agency.

This most recent free agency class of linebackers was really deep, but the money they got was absurd. I for one am glad Elway avoiding overpaying the position in the off-season. I also am happy he has passed on the guys who have been available in recent years early, because I think a lot of them have been over hyped and overrated due to lack of depth at the position year after year. Inside linebacker has sort of become the quarterback position of the defense in regards to the lack of options out there forcing average and mediocre guys to be severely over drafted and severely overpaid. I think if the compensation warranted Elway would add an inside linebacker early.
