I would rather have Jones as well. I do think we would have to win a bidding war, which may or may not end well for us. I know I am looking at this wrong but I would give up a 3rd for Slay. Denver could draft a 3rd rd CB the next 10 years in a row and maybe not end up with a guy as good as Slay. Now a second or first rd pick is a whole other discussion. I would not be in favor of that.

Some numbers on Jones this past season. 69 Targets, 33 receptions allowed, 351 yards allowed, 6 pass breakups, 3 TDs allowed. Compared to Slay who had 89 targets, 49 receptions allowed, 704 yards allowed, 13 pass breakups, 2 TDs allowed, and 2 INTs.
Both are great CBs even if Slay is a little more hyped than his metrics indicate. With Slay you get better ball skills but he generally gives up more yardage. Jones is younger and while he doesn’t offer the same ball skills, he’s not going to concede much through the air. You can’t go wrong with either guy, but one guy is a free agent and you’d have to trade for the other.

I am including increased expectations of Callahan too. He is essentially a free agent addition before free agency starts.
Whoever they choose to add I would also expect one of the top five picks to be a CB prospect to develop.
Secondary is not far off from being pretty damn good if all goes right. Which it should be with all the money being spent on it.

I would like to see us pursue Jones, but if it's Harris or Slay for roughly the same amount I would prefer CHJ all day. Even if he is declining his familiarity is valuable. We could draft around CHJ because we know him inside and out.
Im not counting out Callahan, in fact I expect(hope) great things with him as he will have had plenty of time to rehab.

Prefer they try to work it out with Harris. Pay him the $14M for a couple years and keep the pick.
Not even sure this still possible or if the bridge is already burned with him.

I would rather overpay a little for Byron Jones. He would not require giving up draft capital and he is two years younger.

The issue may not be being able to pick either Slay or Jones. It could be our info is telling us Jones is looking to go elsewhere. It's not really a one or the other.

I would rather give up zero picks and sign Byron Jones for $15M/year than give that kind of money to the older and relatively-underperforming Slay.

His numbers have gone down the last 2 years with virtually the same amount of targets, he just turned 29, he has made it known that he wants a new contract, and he skipped a portion of voluntary and mandatory workouts last offseason. Sounds similar to Chris Harris' situation but is 1.5yrs younger, and still had 2 years on his current contract. He is likely to cost more than Harris (probably ~15M) except for 2020 would be 10M plus some workout bonus'. Oh yeah, AND he would cost a draft pick - possibly a 2nd? at least a 3rd.
OTOH, there are a couple FA CBs that could be landed for no more money and are younger AND wouldn't have to give up a draft pick.
I would just wait for FA. :2cents:

Detroit wants a premium pick and Slay wants to be extended to $15 million/year.

I just read the News that Detroit was shopping him around. If I was Denver I would inquire as to what they want in return. If the price is right I would love to see Denver pull off this Move because Slay can Play.Last edited by DENVERSB50CHAMP; 02-18-2020, 07:38 AM.

Lions are shopping him again and Denver could be in the mix. Last season before the deadline they were in talks with each other that would have swapped our star CB for theirs. Maybe this would be a better option than paying extra for a FA?Tags: None
