Last year for the first time Mike Shanahan gave us a little insight into how he drafts. He was talking about the trade the Broncos made to get D.J. He said that they made a very select list of players that they thought carried an absolutely can't miss tag (D.J. was one of the last of those available and also was a position of need). He indicated that after that he chose simply best player available regardless of position. My memory gets a little fuzzy here but I believe that he said something about always being able to use or trade whoever you get.

I don't remember Mike saying that but it makes sense. If the ultimate purpose is to make your team better over all then entertaining trades should at the very least be a consideration.

I beleive you are correct in this, MIkey did fall in love a couple of times with a few players Delta, Nash, middlebroke and asshley come to mind one of which may become a great all round receiver this year. I remember his comment about Nash at the time "he is Mannings go to guy". Another may become a serviceable FS.

Mikey has not drafted well at the #1 position except at LB and DL.

IMHO those #1 and maybe #2 picks should be able to almost step in and start unless of course you are that deep in all positions you are drafting for the future.
Any pick 3 or after that stays with the team is a bonus. But #1and 2 should be locks unless they are injured after the draft.

Yes I know that everyone, all teams have mistakes but these should be exceptions and not 40% of the folks picked.

I hope you're right. But it's tough to know exactly what players Shanahan is targeting (good).

Everyone is saying the Broncos need a DL. But would you be surprised if Shanahan selected a WR or TE in Round #1 and got a DL in #2 or #3, etc.? It all depends on who's available. Plus, are the Broncos going to a 3-4 as the base D? Then maybe they want a NT who'll fit into that system.

It's all a psych game to keep other teams from guessing what player Shanahan wants -- a game he plays very well. The Broncos have better draft discipline than many teams.

After all, have YOU been able to predict who we're getting? I've been surprised by nearly every Broncos draft. Remember Darius Watts? Remember that people also said we'd take a DL last year, but NO!

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Shanahan didn't select a DL until the middle or later rounds. He's NOT going to take a guy just because he's the best available at DL and he needs DL. That's how we ended up with Marcus Nash and Shanahan has said he won't make that mistake again.

With us matching Putziers offer from the Jets I would be very surprised to see us draft a TE in round 1. I could see us going DT, Rushbacker, or WR. I would see an outside chance at a safety but more likely we will address that with players we have or later in the draft.

My hunch is that if the Jets decided to pursue a trade form Putzier that we may go after a TE but not until the a later in the draft. Of coarse that is all dependent on what the Jets are willing to offer in exchange and if also we side a TE such as Alexander in FA.

What Shanahan DIDN'T say is that everyone knew that New Orleans was salivating at the chance to draft D.J Williams, so he had to trade up ahead of them to get him. Williams was the last player because Michael Clayton was drafted by Tampa Bay. If he can move Trevor Pryce to gain a few places in the 1st round, don't be surprised to see that sort of thing happen again. After all, DJ Williams was an excellent pick who is going to be a pro-bowl player quite soon I believe, so it worked out (Michael Clayton would have been a super-pick as well).

As for Marcus Nash, the Broncos needed a WR, so they drafted "the best available" WR. They were unlucky in that he was a total bust, but that's really the way to overpay for mediocre players.

Does Shanahan have a bad draft history? Well, he's not the best in the NFL, but compare him to the Raider's Al Davis!Last year he was so sold on Robert Gallery that he didn't even consider Phillip Rivers or Ben Roethlisberger! How stupid is THAT draft pick going to seem 5 years from now! (I don't care if Gallery is in the pro-bowl by then -- we all know that the Raiders with Roethlisberger would have been a thorn in our sides for many YEARS). Kerry Collins does not exactly strike terror into the hearts of D coordinators!

Well done Cugel. Just to piggy back on the Nash pick. I have heard it said many times that most of time picks out of the top 15 or so are usually considered projects are considered to be more of a risk and usually require more development. Nash was one those that fit into that category.

I disagree I feel that any of the top 75 picks or so should be almost be able to step in and start. After all they should be one of the top 100 atheltes coming out of college. And as long as they did not go to podunk state or slippery rock teachers college, they should have played against MAJOR college competition all year long. I don't want ot start conterversy about the few small school players like Mobley from Kutztown. Because they are a rarity.

Yes I know that some will be duds. But most should be starters IMHO by the end of their first if not second season. Unless of course they are being drafted or depth and behind all pro getting ready to retire.

i think i would be a good scout. if i could get a job in the NFL it would be as a scout, i judge talent well.

and i still feel jarious jackson could have been a great QB if anyone bothered to seriously work with him. same with sam brandon. unless there was something that happened in the locker room that i dont see out here. Personally i think the coaching staff waits for players to develop on their own, but some players need the guidance and they will take off.

Gurode is not a Parcells favorite, but he is a 6'4"-325 former CU Buff who would
have a homecoming of sorts...the Cowboys have essentially replaced him anyway with the signing of the Packer Guard (forgot his name)....Gurode is a big, physical, yet athletic player that was selected in the Top Forty just three years ago...and he has two years remaing on his original five-year deal, so he would fit the cap...

You get your RG and Trevor gets a chance with the rest of the geriatric Cowgirlz...

We need a RT who will play RG this season. Next season Lepsis is gone, Foster is scooting to LT. So, if we are going to trade or sign a FA O-linemen, it should be someone who can move to RT next season, PJ can simply play guard then.
