    RaiderBeat.com Staff Report

Were it not for quarterback JaMarcus Russell, rookie wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey would have been crucified on a daily basis for his subpar play last season.

As it were, Heyward-Bey finished his first NFL season with only nine recpetions for 124 yards and one touchdown in 11 starts. He missed the final five games with a foot injury. His play seemed to justify the widespread criticism the Raiders received for taking Heyward-Bey with the seventh pick of the 2009 NFL Draft.

It’s the Raiders who are going to have the last laugh, if you buy in to coach Tom Cable’s over-the-top assessment of Heyward-Bey from his progress the three-plus months since the season ended.

“You guys will be excited when you see us in OTA, the improvement Darrius has already made,” Cable said in a pre-draft news conference in Alameda, Calif., on Thursday. “That guy has jumped out at us since winter program, or offseason program, just the quality of work he’s done.

“What he did between the end of the season and when we started on March 17 is phenomenal, and probably no one is more excited about a guy on our team than Darrius right now. He really, really has taken this things leaps and bounds, further probably than what we thought we could go with it this quickly. It will be nice to get him on the field and get him into coverages and get him into route concepts and doing those kinds of things.”

Cable raved about how he witnessed Heyward-Bey going at it in the weight room Tuesday with 130-pound dumbbells. Time will tell how that translates into Heyward-Bey getting over the drops that plagued him from the day he signed a huge contract in late July.

More later on Cable’s news conference and what he had to say about Russell’s progress, the upcoming NFL Draft and Oakland’s quarterback situation.

But the Heyward-Bey revelation just couldn’t wait, given his status as lightning rod No. 2 for criticism. Translation: Heyward-Bey has a lock on one of two starting jobs for 2010. We’ll see who’s laughing soon thereafter. Cable seems convinced it will be him, managing general partner Al Davis, Heyward-Bey and Raiders fans.

wit russel finaly becomeing the francihse qb and hayward bey becoming teh next andre johnson n fitzgerald wit his size, strength (40time 4.3) these 2 wil are corner stone players for the teh next decade or so

You could have Jerry Rice, Shannon Sharpe, Andre Johnson, and Randy Moss, and Russell would still complete less than 50% of his passes.
