I never quite got the full story on this. Did McDaniels really try to trade Cutler for Cassel or was it just a misunderstanding?

Wow...what a disaster that would have been.
Cassel looks absolutely terrible without that strong Pats team behind him.
I know many, especially opposing team fans, don't think Orton is good. But I think we got a really good QB out of that trade, and am happy we did it. :orton:2013 Adopt-a-Bronco: Demaryius Thomas

Jay Cuter threw a hissy fit when he did not get a say in who was hired to replace Shanahan, and then compounded that when Jeremy Bates was not retained as the Offensive Coordinator.
He resisted meeting with McDaniels, and then when he finally did, they worked together on the new offense for about two weeks when apparently McDaniels decided he could not work with Jay Cutler.
In the end, it was the right decision for both sides, in my opinion.
Cutler has the better arm and the wow factor. Orton is far more professional and consistent, and is playing at an All Pro level right now, and is excaty what McDaniels wants.
The problem with the Broncos is not Kyle Orton, it's the youth (particularly on the O-line), the injuries and the defense.
I have been critical of Josh McDaniels, but I am trying to temper that, as he has undertaken a radical turnover on the Broncos, and you really have to give those situations a couple of years to see how it pans out.
My guess is the Broncos defense will be the Acillies Heel for this team this year, and at seasons end, Eric Mangini will get fired from the Browns, and at some point he will be brought in as DC for the Broncos, and the offseason additions in free agency and the draft will be designed to bolster the defense.
For me, next year is the real test for McDaniels' Broncos and where they stand.
But Kyle Orton has played extremely well so far, so losing Jay Cutler has not really hurt the team as much as some would like to think.

McCluster, Arenas, the defense, and the running game are the main reason.. Personally, i think SF beats them bad on Sunday and they come back to reality..
Cassel is holding them back from being a playoff contender.

Their defense and special teams and running backs are the reason they are leading our division.

However, once he got the job, McDaniels who was supposed to be reporting to Jim Goodman, first initiated a power-play to get rid of Goodman and once he had final say over personnel (which was previously Goodman's call), tried to sneak a deal for Cassel. The news first broke here in Boston of a failed three-way trade that would have essentially (from our POV) swapped Cutler for Cassel (with a first-round pick from Tampa going to NE). Cutler found out about the attempted trade through the media and asked McDaniels point-blank about it. McDaniels initially lied about it and finally acknowledged that he did try to trade him. After being caught lying, McDaniels failed to regain his QB's trust, leading Cutler to ask for a trade.
Cutler's emphasis on trust might have seemed strange at first, but in hindsight with the pattern of behavior that McDaniels has exhibited with Nolan, Marshall, Scheffler, Hillis etc, it looks like Cutler read McDaniels perfectly and figured him out.
IMO the trade has worked out for both parties. Cutler is playing for the team he rooted for growing up and one of the classier head coaches in the league (and more importantly a guy he can trust). McDaniels has got his own handpicked QB and doesn't have to share credit for whatever success he may have had with Shanahan's offense (and more importantly with Shanahan's QB) with his predecessor. Having Cutler here would have been a no-win situation for McDaniels - if he succeeded, Shanahan would have gotten credit for the excellent, young offense he left behind; if he failed, he would have been panned for not being able to win with a team that was halfway ready-made for success. Of course, some might say that if you win, it doesn't matter who gets the credit, but that's not the way the minds of the Belichick proteges work. Regardless, McDaniels got what he wanted and Cutler got what he wanted.
Most importantly, whether either of those outcomes were favorable for the Broncos remains to be seen.Hoping for a defensive-minded head coach and a return to the ZBS on offense. At the very least, no more cheaters for head coach.
