We have depth, we can't afford to lost 4 key starters on defense, plus our 3rd safety, plus our 3rd CB, plus our starting DT, plus our 3rd ILB/ST ace. Hard to overcome all of that.
Dumerville has had one good year. Lets not get carried away & compare him to the Best TE in the league & multiple time all-pro. As for you point of how we would do without Gates. i'm pretty sure our back-up TE had 2 TD catches today including a great 1 handed grab.

Well he had 12.5 sacks in his 2nd year, and 17.5 or 18 sacks last year.

I'm not comparing, just saying Dumervil is the one player on defense we cannot afford to lose.

Against the worst pass defense in the NFL, good job.

Chargers have been without Merriman the last few years but seem to find a way to work without him. If your defense is built around 1 player your not gonna be very successful.

Who cares if they were the last ranked pass defense. Knowing McDaniels he will probably try to run the ball against the Texans....

Merriman has sucked the past few years, he's not the player used to be. One, it's not built around Dumervil, just saying he is the one player on defense can cannot afford to lose point blank.

How would the Packers do without Matthews, Colts without Freeney, Steelers without Harrison, Vikings without Allen, and so on.

No, i highly doubt it, we can't run the ball. Throw the ball 50+ times ftw.

Thats my point....Our defense was built around the pressure Merriman used to bring but after his knee injury we had to make do.

Defenses are built around philosophies, not players.

I agree with this mostly, but even Pittsburgh's defense fell apart last year without Polamalu.

Some players are just magnetic, players like that are the difference between between being middle of the pack and top 5.

I totally agree. Check out Indy with and without Sanders -- when he's on the field, which is rare, it's a completely different D. I was commenting to NFLfan's comment around SD's D being built around Merriman's pressure on the QB.

I'm not saying Dumervil is Troy important, but it's quite obvious how much we miss him.

Like Freeney for Indy, Harrison for Pitt, Allen for Minn, Matthews for GB, and so on.

Mathews has the same problem LT had as a rookie, and what AP still has.

They refuse to concede the tackle, they believe they can break every thing, they don't meet the ground without a fight, and it costs them the ball. Love this guys long term potential, but he needs to fix this, and start taping his ankles every week.

Umm, AD has no fumbles this year if i'm not mistaken.

It's crazy, but AD look better this year the the past 3 years, he's such a beast. One of my favorite players not on Denver.

well at least the problems Mathews is having can be associated with rookie mistakes and nagging innuries. other than his rookie mistakes and injuries, he has looked good running the ball IMO.

i think he should be able to get past this and become a pretty quality running back, good enough to do damage and take a little pressure off the passing game at least.

hopefully for us he gets healthy over the bye and can have a breakout game vs Denver.

No, actually McDaniels can stop it.
