Broncos agree to deal with Saints to hire Sean Payton as head coach (nfl.com)

The Denver Broncos have agreed to a deal with the New Orleans Saints to hire Sean Payton as as their next head coach, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday.

Rapoport added that the deal has Denver sending a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick to the Saints, with whom Payton was under contract after previously stepping down from his position as the HC in New Orleans last year. Denver will also receive a third-round pick in the trade, per Rapoport.

The Broncos had previously fired Nathaniel Hackett on Dec. 26 as their head coach after a 4-11 record to start his first season with the team.

Around The NFL will have more shortly.

Really? I thought it was gonna be the next 2 or 3 first being NO had all the power in the trade. Doing a lot of reading today on things they can do with the draft and cap to make it work. We will see.

It all depends on if Payton will run a balanced offense in Denver. Wilson....when Hacket was gone....had two good games. Maybe there's hope for Wilson next year. Hacket's system clearly didn't fit Wilson or the Broncos' talent. Even when the Broncos' O-line is healthy, they don't pass-block well....but DO run-block well and the Broncos have a few good RBs. The Broncos are more of a running-team than passing. Payton didn't run the ball much in New Orleans, which worries me. If he tries to run a pass-mostly offense in Denver....its just going to be Hackett all over again.

I heard NO was asking for a first, I was just surprised they got that second as well. I think this could turn out well for the broncos. I also think there's a chance it could be disastrous.

I expected NO to demand 2 years of first round picks, which I thought would torpedo Denver's pursuit. For me, losing a very low (#29) first round pick doesn't bother me. Equally, giving a second round, but getting a third, doesn't bother me.

It is still a risk but I completely think it was worth the gamble. Payton, to me, was the most qualified candidate. But I'm biased and I've wanted Payton for years.

And you and your Sparkler buddies better hope, pray, dream the Dolt coaching staff can fix "choker nation".

Won't happen. In fact, your losing, choking ways are going to get more ugly.....no doubt.

care to elaborate? All you can bank on is the chargers have chocked so therefor they will continue to do so because.......... things never change?

guess that means the broncos will continue to have terrible QB play from russ "no doubt"?

I was honestly thrilled with the cost. I thought it would take us more. I think that Payton is worth the cost honestly, at least if he moves us out of the AFC West Basement... It was really rough spending the last two years surrounded by nothing but Neanderthal Chiefs fans that had to share a single brain cell among the entire group... It made me miss the quality of smack here by comparison...

If he turns into what reid did for KC then yeah it's worth it. but typically retread coaches don't work out. As i said somewhere else, the main issue is wilson and if he can get back on track. due to Wilson's age and his style of game, that wont be easy.

SP needs good QB play, which IMO is likely a big reason why he retired from the saints. will he get it from Wilson? he has to because he likely isn't getting anyone else any time soon.

                            Bradley Chubb for Sean Payton.

I'm fairly comfortable with Wilson going forward. Granted, I was comfortable with him in the preseason last year. I'm not trying to be a blind homer, but I see reasons for optimism going into this season. Sean Payton obviously, the greatly improved o-line, another year of chemistry with his core group.

I thought I remembered him getting better down the stretch and he did to an extent...but man...that Rams game, I forgot about that abortion...

I dunno we got a small sample size to work with of his time post-Hackett, but I think he'll bring it together.
