  • Constant Chronic Migraines

As most of you know, I play football for my school at an Intermediate level (a private school level below JV). I play Safety. Lately I've been getting terrible head-splitting headaches and migraines. It also coincides with my head getting a lot of punishment (falling hard and my head whiplashing back into the ground gave me the WORSE migraine I've ever had). On Saturday, I tried to tackle a big fullback and I missed. I don't know exactly what happened, but I remember running towards him and then being on the ground (and getting back up) when the whole opponent sideline erupted in cheers yelling, "OOOH! HITSTICK!" I don't remember the hit, but I also remember my head hurting like crazy after. Today I couldn't practice because of a terrible migraine again, which I'm bummed about because the DBs looked like they did some awesome tackling drills.

So does anyone have tips on how to prevent or lessen my headaches and migraines? I seem to get railed a lot.

Also, I don't take painkillers anymore because my body started getting used to them and I had to take more than recommended to get the full effect. I also started getting terrible side effects (heavy coughs, nausea, vomiting).

    -------------

The first big hit that happened to me was on a block when I was chasing a huge fullback (who was surprisingly fast). The guy came from the left side and I didn't see him at all. I got BLASTED (both sidelines and crowd OOH'ed). But I remember that hit and I remember falling, seeing the guy flash back, and getting back up. My neck and lower spine was sore after and I got it checked out by the trainers who said I probably hyperextended it and it was fine 2 days after. On game film I literally disappeared off the screen. It looked like one of those crazy YouTube big hits videos.

The second big hit (and probably the most serious) happened early last week during practice. We were doing hitting drills and one guy steps on my feet and wrapped up my arms so I couldn't break my fall or move, and he kept driving his feet (like a good form tackle). I fell back hard and my head (the back of it) slammed into the ground and bounced up a little too I think. I remember the hit, I think I closed my eyes when falling but I'm not too sure. That night I had the WORSE migraine ever.

Then on Saturday I got hit again. It was a screen pass and I was playing safety on that side, and the guy was running along the opponent sideline. Surprisingly there was a big hole and no one close besides me. I remember running up to him, but that's pretty much it. I also remember getting back up while the whole opponent sideline erupted into cheers yelling, "OOOH!!! HIT STICK!!!" I don't remember the impact, the crunch, or anything else. I saw it on film today and it looked like I got run over, crumpled a little, and then I rolled over onto my knees and got back up. I don't remember any of that besides getting back up to the jeers.

I don't know how to stop it, but you might want to see a doctor about it as they might not be normal migraines/headaches.

I had to quit football after my freshman year due to a head injury and although I miss football I think it was the better decision.

Just remember to take your health as your #1 concern.

From what you are describing, you HAVE a concussion. You absolutely have to see a doctor. I am not joking, and in no way am I saying this lightly. The biggest tip I have is that you need to let your head clear up before you play again if you want the headaches to stop and if you don't want to get worse. Please, do not participate in practice or a game again before you see a doctor. This is a very serious issue (By the way I am a medical student, so I am not just making this up).

The bottom line is you HAVE to get checked out and you have to do it yesterday.

I was thinking the same thing while I was reading his post. Please kiddo....get your butt to the doc pronto. Multiple concussions can lead to long term issues. Continuing to play or practice could be detrimental to your health.
Ready for the friggen season already!

You have a concussion, it was the same with me when I got slammed on my head in a wrestling meet. Didn't know it was a concussion till I went to the doctors a few days later.

I strongly suggest not practicing at all because slamming your head more is VERY dangerous if you already have a concussion.

Anytime you get hit in the head and you lose consciousness or can't remember how you hit your head, it's a concussion. Always see the doctor ANY TIME there is loss of consciousness.

As someone who suffers from migraines (and I suffer from migraine aura as well, look that one up if you want to know how scary a real migraine is), I can assure you what you are feeling is not a migraine.

Go see a doctor, get your head examined.

Nick, I was just curious how you are feeling and if you ever managed to get checked out? Let us know!
