I'm glad to see some in the national print media are on the coach's side on this one. Read the article the other day--ridiculous. No quotes, sources, etc. Belongs in the "Rumors" column of SI or ESPN the mag. To me, it sounded amazingly like something I would read on this message board. So and so is the 3rd cousin of the jock strap launderer and he said that the backup ball boy heard that the QB's girlfriend's grandmother said that he was a loser. I hope she is thoroughly embarassed and has difficulty landing future jobs over this little escapade.

Yeah, the rant was completely called for. If my son got ripped up like that --and it wasnt just an attack on the kid's play, it was an attack on his personality-- I would have gone off too. It was a low blow, and uncalled for.

That's exactly it. Although amateurs, they are allowed to be criticized for their play.

However, to call out an amatuer's character or personality (Carlson claimed Reid has no guts or heart, and used his close relationship with his mother as evidence, and that he cried and wants to transfer), is kind of crossing the line.

Pro athletes are expected, to some degree, to be examples in the community, because of the money they make. Their off the field behavior, for better or worse, are expected to be under scrutiny to a degree.

An amateur athlete, while maybe a minor celebrity in their hometown and on or near campus, should not be held to that same standard. A majority of college athletes are simply playing to get an education, since a large majority will never go pro. Criticizing a kid personally just because he maybe isn't the most talented guy is weak.

And of course, here is the obligatory ridiculous article inferring that Gundy did this only because Carlson is a woman. (Thus inferring he is sexist. And I quote - As if what Gundy was really thinking was, ''How dare that ***** criticize one of my players. She shouldn't be writing about football. She should be home making babies.' '' Garbage article..good for a laugh though).Something that Carlson her self doesn't seem to think or at least state.
