McFadden, Tebow among Heisman finalists
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, Florida sophomore quarterback Tim Tebow, Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel and Hawaii signal-caller Colt Brennan have been named finalists for the 2007 Heisman Trophy, which will be presented to the nation's top collegiate player by the Downtown Athletic Club on Saturday in New York.
McFadden, last year's Heisman runner-up to Troy Smith, has run for 1,725 yards with 15 touchdowns in 12 games. He set an SEC record with 321 rushing yards in a November 3 game against South Carolina and has averaged 143.8 yards per game -- fourth-best in the nation.
In addition, the junior has 21 receptions for 164 yards with another score, and has also thrown four touchdown passes this season. He is also a finalist this year for the Maxwell Award as the nation's top player and the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back, an honor he won last year as a sophomore.
No Arkansas player has ever won the Heisman. McFadden was the first Razorback to be named a finalist last year.
Tebow became the first player in Football Bowl Subdivision history, formerly Division I-A, to throw at least 20 touchdown passes and run for at least 20 scores in the same season. He has thrown for 3,132 yards with 29 touchdowns and just six interceptions, while rushing for 838 yards with 22 scores.
As was the case with McFadden, Tebow's signature game came against South Carolina as he ran for 120 yards with five touchdowns and threw for 304 yards with two more scores on November 10. His 22 rushing touchdowns are tied for third in the country and his passer rating of 177.9 is second-best.
If Tebow wins, he would become the first sophomore to capture the Heisman and the third Gator to win the award, joining quarterbacks Danny Wuerffel in 1996 and Steve Spurrier in 1966.
Daniel has thrown for 4,170 yards, third-most in the country, with 33 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 13 games this season. He is fourth in the nation in total offense, averaging 342.6 yards per game, and has also rushed for four touchdowns.
Twice this season, the junior threw for more than 400 yards and twice he tossed five touchdown passes. He really made a name for himself against Kansas on November 24, completing 40-of-49 passes for 361 yards with three scores, but struggled the following week against Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game with just 219 yards passing and no touchdowns.
A Missouri player has never won the Heisman.
Brennan has completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 4,174 yards, second-most in the nation, with 38 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 11 games. His passer rating of 166.3 is third-best in the country and his 38 TD tosses rank third. He is also second in total offense, averaging 385.4 yards per game.
The senior led Hawaii to its first undefeated season, completing it December 1 against Washington with a banner game in which he completed 42-of-50 passes for 442 yards with touchdowns. The Warriors will play in a BCS bowl game for the first time, taking on Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's night.
