I have seen a few Vols fans around this board, and for those of you who have noticed, when it comes to college football my heart is split between 2 teams. Since we already have 2 rather large threads about one of those teams, the buffs, I decided to make a Tennessee Vols thread to pass the time of the off season, and maybe get some CPs from some of those Vol fans on the board
I guess I'll start out going position by position starting with the QB
QB- Crompton is the key to the Vols success this season. He will have to limit the turnovers but at the same time open up the offense that has the play makers to be one of the top offenses in the NCAA. Last season I think the offense was held back by Ainge and coach Cut. Both of their styles were too conservative and neither one liked taking a shot down field. With Crompton and new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson look for more 3 and outs but more points on the board because they are gonna open it up.
RB- Last year this time people were wondering who was going to win the starting RB job. Would it be Lamarcus Coker, Arian Foster, or Montario Hardesty? Well Hardesty was hampered by an injury but still played well when he was on the field, look at the Georgia game, but this year is still hampered by injury and will most likely be the #2 RB going into the season. LaMarcus Coker, oh what high hopes I had for him, lead the team in rushing in 2006 but was kicked off the team mid season for repeated violations. These Violations have lead me to rename him as LaMarcus Toker. Clever huh?
Well this year the RB spot is pretty much set. Arian Foster is a beast I love to watch him run, he seems to always get away from first contact but needs to improve vision. Lennon Creer will be the #3 RB, but will play a lot as the #2 with Hardesty's injury issues. Creer showed a lot of promise last year and got some experience after Toker was kicked off the team, and even served as the #2 RB in the bowl game against Wisconsin.
FB- Holbert goes down again with a knee injury in spring practice and will be out for the season again... To honor Holbert's hard work with no pay off these past couple seasons Foster will wear Holbert's #30 against UCLA the first game of the season.
Sophomore Kevin Cooper will be starting at FB
WR- Briscoe and Taylor two seniors will probably be the starters going into the season, but Gerald Jones will be a big part of the offense. Also look for red shirt freshman Ahmad Paige and sophomore Denarius Moore to be in the rotation at WR.
Gerald Jones will line up at QB sometimes in the formation they like to call G-gun, which was seen in the SEC championship and in their bowl game on a TD. He is the biggest play maker on the offense, and even watch for Eric Berry doing the same thing and maybe even both of them in the same backfield!!
Where will E.J. Abrams-Ward play this season? The 6'5 4 star ATH will most likely play WR this upcoming season if he isn't red shirted, but with some of the WR recruits looking to come in this years recruiting class with JaRon Stokes already committing, I wouldn't be surprised to see Abrams-Ward on the defensive side of the ball at LB because the Vols love their speedy LBs.
TE- They lose their 2 starting TEs from last year, Chris Brown and Brad Cottam. Starting at TE will be Brad's younger brother Jeff. Jeff is almost identical to Brad with the 6'8 frame and 4.6 40 speed. I'm sure Luke Stocker will get some reps, and maybe 2008 recruit Aaron Douglas will get thrown in there if not red shirted. Not sure how Clawson uses the TE in his system, but he will have 3 TEs all 6'6 or taller to work with.
OL- Don't really know if they are all returning from last year. Eric Young is gone, but he was hurt early on in the season. Last year the squad gave up just 3 sacks all season with one for sure being Ainge tripping and falling by himself. The squad is great at pass protecting, but will need to improve the run blocking.
