  • A look at the 2008 Tennessee Volunteers

I have seen a few Vols fans around this board, and for those of you who have noticed, when it comes to college football my heart is split between 2 teams. Since we already have 2 rather large threads about one of those teams, the buffs, I decided to make a Tennessee Vols thread to pass the time of the off season, and maybe get some CPs from some of those Vol fans on the board

I guess I'll start out going position by position starting with the QB

QB- Crompton is the key to the Vols success this season. He will have to limit the turnovers but at the same time open up the offense that has the play makers to be one of the top offenses in the NCAA. Last season I think the offense was held back by Ainge and coach Cut. Both of their styles were too conservative and neither one liked taking a shot down field. With Crompton and new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson look for more 3 and outs but more points on the board because they are gonna open it up.

RB- Last year this time people were wondering who was going to win the starting RB job. Would it be Lamarcus Coker, Arian Foster, or Montario Hardesty? Well Hardesty was hampered by an injury but still played well when he was on the field, look at the Georgia game, but this year is still hampered by injury and will most likely be the #2 RB going into the season. LaMarcus Coker, oh what high hopes I had for him, lead the team in rushing in 2006 but was kicked off the team mid season for repeated violations. These Violations have lead me to rename him as LaMarcus Toker. Clever huh?

Well this year the RB spot is pretty much set. Arian Foster is a beast I love to watch him run, he seems to always get away from first contact but needs to improve vision. Lennon Creer will be the #3 RB, but will play a lot as the #2 with Hardesty's injury issues. Creer showed a lot of promise last year and got some experience after Toker was kicked off the team, and even served as the #2 RB in the bowl game against Wisconsin.

FB- Holbert goes down again with a knee injury in spring practice and will be out for the season again... To honor Holbert's hard work with no pay off these past couple seasons Foster will wear Holbert's #30 against UCLA the first game of the season.

Sophomore Kevin Cooper will be starting at FB

WR- Briscoe and Taylor two seniors will probably be the starters going into the season, but Gerald Jones will be a big part of the offense. Also look for red shirt freshman Ahmad Paige and sophomore Denarius Moore to be in the rotation at WR.

Gerald Jones will line up at QB sometimes in the formation they like to call G-gun, which was seen in the SEC championship and in their bowl game on a TD. He is the biggest play maker on the offense, and even watch for Eric Berry doing the same thing and maybe even both of them in the same backfield!!

Where will E.J. Abrams-Ward play this season? The 6'5 4 star ATH will most likely play WR this upcoming season if he isn't red shirted, but with some of the WR recruits looking to come in this years recruiting class with JaRon Stokes already committing, I wouldn't be surprised to see Abrams-Ward on the defensive side of the ball at LB because the Vols love their speedy LBs.

TE- They lose their 2 starting TEs from last year, Chris Brown and Brad Cottam. Starting at TE will be Brad's younger brother Jeff. Jeff is almost identical to Brad with the 6'8 frame and 4.6 40 speed. I'm sure Luke Stocker will get some reps, and maybe 2008 recruit Aaron Douglas will get thrown in there if not red shirted. Not sure how Clawson uses the TE in his system, but he will have 3 TEs all 6'6 or taller to work with.

OL- Don't really know if they are all returning from last year. Eric Young is gone, but he was hurt early on in the season. Last year the squad gave up just 3 sacks all season with one for sure being Ainge tripping and falling by himself. The squad is great at pass protecting, but will need to improve the run blocking.

    Defense-

DE- They lose starters Xavier Mitchell and Antonio Reynolds. Senior Robert Ayers, who spelled in last season, and Junior Wes Brown will be the starting DEs come fall unless 2007 5 star recruit Ben Martin or once thought to be LB Chris Walker beat them out in summer practices which it doesn't look like they will. Even if Martin doesn't take the starting job from either Ayers or Brown he will be seen a lot especially in passing situations because of his excellent speed.

DT- Senior Demonte Bolden and Junior Dan Williams will be a force up front. After a disappointing season for Bolden where it seemed like he got worse as the season went on, but still played ok, Bolden looks to return to being the top DT on the team. However Dan Williams will look to build on his last year success where he got better and better as the season went on, and looked to be a dominant force inside. Look for these 2 to have a big season together. 2006 5 star DE JUCO transfer will be the 3rd DT and will spell in both DE and DT.

LBs- This is the question mark for the defense. Can they recover from losing top 10 pick Jarod Mayo from the middle and strong side LB Ryan Karl? I think that losing Karl could help the defense athletically, but losing Mayo will be a big loss, I wish he would have come back.

"Uncle" Rico Mccoy, as I like to call him, was great last year. He is a true WLB he runs side line to side line making big hits. I expect him to continue to impress. As of now Senior Elix Wilson has a step up on 2007 5 star LB Chris Donald at MLB. Donald has been working hard after he was criticized when he got to campus for being over weight. I hope he shows this summer why he was a 5 star prospect and mans the middle this year. SLB will go to Senior Safety/LB Nevin McKenzie. After projected starter Dorian Davis was kicked off the team this winter McKenzie slid into the spot. Davis and him are very similar in that they are extremely fast for the LB and would be playing safety at most schools, but in Tennessee they put the safeties at LB and the CBs at safety.

CB- Which leads me into the secondary, which will be the strength of the team. Senior DeAngelo Willingham will be the #1 corner for the team. He is a very good corner with all the things you look for in a corner, size, speed, ect. The #2 CB spot I originally just gave to Sophomore Brent Vinson, a converted 5 star WR who played there most of last season learning on the fly. But Dennis Rogan, the return man, has found himself the guy at the position at the moment. Vinson will challenge in the summer, but if he ends up the 3rd corner Rogan will be the guy covering the slot.

S- The two guys at the position make me want to goo my pants. I know that sounds gay but these guys are amazing and are the best safety tandem in the NCAA. Eric Berry will be playing SS after his All-American year last year as a freshman. He is my favorite player on the team and yes he is the guy in my sig. Amazing athlete will be playing some offense too, but watch him continue what he did last season which is be a ball hawk. Now onto the other safety Demetrice Morley will start at FS after being kicked off the team the year before for failing to register for spring classes. The once 5 star top DB recruit and starter at S his sophomore year has cleaned up his act and raised his grades.

Morley and Berry have been close since Morley arrived back to campus for spring semester, doing basically everything together. Look for this friendship to translate onto the field with the most feared, hardest hitting, ballhawking safety tandem anyone has ever seen.

Will Crompton be the next underachieving QB at Tennessee, or will he be a flash in the pan ala Manning/Martin style? It seems like it's been one, or the other.

I really hope Crompton can be Manning/Martin, and from what I heard about the spring gave Crompton is the real deal. He has the "Laser, Rocket arm". If not I don't think they will hesitate to put in the raved about BJ Coleman or Nick Stephens.

You forgot about Brandon Warren, former 5 star recruit and transfer from FSU. He was recently admitted to UT, now he just has to be cleared by the NCAA to play. He was a promising TE for the 'Noles and could be the next great TE from UT.

I have to join HCB in saying GO BULLDOGS!!!

Fans on OSU's message board are rather fond of Georgia. UGA fans treated us well when we played down in Athens.

O I heard that he was coming, but there were a lot of IFs about him with grades and such. Hes been trying to get in for a year I think, good to hear hes on board. I would think he would be the H-Back that was left void when Chris Brown left.

I think a lot of people are way to high on Georgia. They are very very good, but to give them a free pass through the SEC, and the SEC East for that matter, is kinda silly.

                          haha we suck

eric berry is the only great player on this team, foster was just held to freaking 3 yards on 3 carries

crompton was a major bust and nick stevens is playing 10x better than crompton did and he will only improve . . . hopefully

the D is sick and is def the only strong point of this team . . . pretty much the opposite of the denver broncos

Too bad Eric Berry can't play at every position.

Nice to see fellow Vol fans.
