  • College QB question

How often does it happen in college football where a red shirt walk on is made the starting QB? Living in Washington state I am a Cougar fan and they have had a very poor season. Due to injuries the head coach is considering starting red shirt walk on J.T. Levenseller against Stanford November 1st. It isn't set in concrete yet, but this is the desired decision at the moment. While I like the idea of giving the kid a chance, I'd hate to see him go out there and get seriously injured. Comments?

I guess if I lived in a state that didn't have any sports, professional or NCAA, other then gambling I'd feel the same way that you do. To add to the burden that Nevada has turned Democrat for the first time in 40 years and I'd say that it sucks to be you.

honestly i think it would be a stupid idea to take a redshirt freshman at this point in the season, and throw him in there. it would ruin his eligibility for 4 more years, so he'd basically have 3 good seasons in him, and then he couldn't play anymore.

there's no benefit to it. they need to keep the redshirt on him, get him some reps in practice, then unveil him next season and go with him as their starter.

Here is the article from the local sports section. I just don't think that there are a lot of options.

              Levenseller preparing to face Stanford

PULLMAN – It may have happened behind closed doors, but coach Paul Wulff admitted Wednesday there was at least one change that occurred during Washington State’s bye week practices.

The Cougars are preparing freshman quarterback J.T. Levenseller to play against Stanford on Nov. 1.

“It’s something we’re really, really considering,” Wulff said. “We’re leaning towards doing it, but we haven’t made a final decision.”

Wulff broached the subject on his radio show Tuesday night, saying that starting quarterback Kevin Lopina is still not 100 percent after missing four weeks with a back injury. WSU practiced this week in its indoor facility, with the workouts closed to the media and public.

“We try to come up with the best decision for the program and the individual,” Wulff said Wednesday. “If a kid is dead set against playing, in a situation like this, we would never play the kid. If the kid really wants to play and we feel it would beneficial to him and the team, for the current time and the future, then we’ll play the kid.

“Right now he really wants to play and we clearly have two quarterbacks who are out for the year, so it’s looking like that’s the direction we will go.”

Levenseller, son of longtime Cougar assistant Mike, graduated from Pullman High in 2007 but delayed his enrollment at WSU until the spring semester of 2008. The plan heading into this season was for Levenseller to use his redshirt, but that was before season-ending injuries to Gary Rogers (neck) and Marshall Lobbestael (knee).

Besides Levenseller and Lopina, who returned in last week’s defeat to USC, redshirt freshman Dan Wagner and scout team quarterback Peter Roberts, who joined the team a few weeks ago, are the only healthy quarterbacks on the roster.

its still stupid to waste his redshirt to play 4 or 5 games. how retarded...that coach is a moron.

Thanks for your inputs. One way or another a young Cougar QB will be thrown out into a situation that they may not be ready for. I look for a lot of running plays and short, safe pass plays. The season is done for WSU, so someone has to sweep up.

When Oregon played us this season, their #2 QB went down, and they burned their red-shirt's ...uh. red-shirt and started him.

Their freshman QB who'd never played a game came in and lead a comeback that almost beat us.

He destroyed our secondary and made his predecessor look like a high school backup.

But that was like, three games in. At this point I'd agree. Starting him could seriously hinder his future career.

I guess if they have no one else to start, they've no choice.

Don't look in the mirror first thing after you get up. Have a cup of coffee or two first . That way you'll kind of be prepared.
