  • Washington Huskies lure Steve Sarkisian from USC

Steve Sarkisian is the new coach at Washington, a source told CBSSports.com Thursday night.

USC's offensive coordinator and assistant head coach will take over for Tyrone Willingham, who will coach his final game for the Huskies on Saturday. Sarkisian, 34, is expected to reconnect the school's recruiting ties to Southern California. He is known for his recruiting and play-calling abilities as well as his ability to coach quarterbacks.

This year's Huskies (0-11) have been called one of the worst teams in Pac-10 history. They are in desperate need of energy, youth and a new direction. Sarkisian provides all three. The school's last winning season was 2002.

It is not known when Sarkisian will take over at Washington. USC plays its final regular-season game Saturday at UCLA. If they win, the Trojans will play Penn State in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

Earlier Thursday, Texas Tech's Mike Leach and Fresno State's Pat Hill pulled their names out of the Washington coaching search. The Seattle Times reported that Washington AD Scott Woodward was "blown away" when Sarkisian interviewed last month.

In two different stints as a USC assistant, Sarkisian was part of five Pac-10 titles and a national championship in 2003. From 2001-03 he coached quarterbacks. After one season in the same position with the Oakland Raiders, he returned in 2005 as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. During at least part of that time he shared duties with Lane Kiffin, the newly named coach at Tennessee.

Sarkisian interviewed to be the Raiders head coach in January 2007. Some outlets reported that he had taken the job but the coach maintained throughout that Sarkisian had never accepted the position. Kiffin eventually took the Oakland job but lasted only four games into his second season in 2008.

Sarkisian and Kiffin took over the play-calling at USC after veteran offensive coordinator Norm Chow left to take the same job with the Tennessee Titans in 2005.

As BYU's quarterback, Sarkisian led the Cougars to a 13-1 Cotton Bowl-winning season in 1996. Chow was his offensive coordinator at BYU.
looks like Washington got the coach I was hoping Notre Dame would go after if they fired Charlie Weis.

now it looks like in a few years and we'll be getting our asses beat by the Huskies too.

Words of wisdom to Notre Dame: Confuscious say "He who wait too long to make decision, end up looking stupid."

I would have to disagree that it's a dumb choice. sure the offense isn't that great right now, but with Sarkisian's experience at USC, plus with him being known very well in California, it won't be difficult for him to recruit and bring in quality players to run the type of system that USC does.

Excellent move by the Huskies, and they'll be a contender in a few years.

Yeah true, but that was the NFL, he will be good for Tenn.

Get a coach with that experience with a QB like Locker and you can have an alright turnaround.
