NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)—Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was chosen as the 2008 player of the year by the Walter Camp Football Foundation on Thursday.

The junior passed for 3,445 yards and 32 touchdowns, while rushing for 576 yards and 10 scores. He is just the second Texas player to win the award, joining 1998 winner Ricky Williams.

“Colt’s leadership and performance for the Longhorns’ offense, whether it was passing the ball or running it, has been most impressive and extremely worthy of this prestigious honor,” foundation president John Barbarotta said in announcing the award.

McCoy is the 42nd Walter Camp winner. He was chosen from a list of finalists that included Florida’s Tim Tebow, Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, and Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree.

McCoy, Tebow and Bradford also are finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

The Walter Camp winner was chosen by the nation’s 119 Football Bowl Subdivision coaches and sports information directors. The trophy will be presented Jan. 17 at the foundation’s annual awards banquet in New Haven.

Walter Camp, known as “The Father of American Football,” first picked an All-America team in 1889. The former Yale athlete and football coach is also credited with developing set plays and limiting teams to 11 players per side.

I say, good for Colt. It's a great honor to win this award, rather than that ol popularity contest, the Heisman.
