  • Heisman vs. Maxwell

Okay, I'm not huge into college football... but what(besides the lore and prestige) is the difference between the two? If you win the Maxwell for(as I believe) "Most outstanding all-around football player" how do you not win the Heisman?? And if you win the "Most outstanding qb" award and the only guys you are competing against in the Heisman lost to you for the qb, how do not then win the Heisman by default????

    Good point.

Maybe they should rename it to "the Hypeman"

They have to give out multiple, essentially identical awards so that they make as many people happy as possible and don't leave anyone out. The sponsors of the awards, the NCAA, and the broadcasters get the money, the players get the awards, and the fans get the satisfaction of knowing their favorite player got an award. Everybody wins.

You can't use logic with this system or the BCS, it doesn't work.

Well the awards are given out by two different organizations. Heisman is given to the best player, Maxwell to best "all-around" player. Clearly two distinct things. Maxwell is given to the player that presents the ability to compete the best in many forms of the game. Tebow won this because he demonstrates the ability to pass, run, hit, and block. Heisman is given to the nations best player (though usually given to offensive skilled players). You have to remember with the Heisman it is given to the best player, not the player with the best stats. Once again two distinct and separate things.

Hope that cleared it up for you!

            Yup.

Jason White won the Heisman in 2003, or 02, I cant remember, but he was the product of having Adrian Peterson and Malcom Kelly. Plus the Swooners aboslutely kicked butt...who else were they going to give it to?

Well, not really.... the only distinction I can see is where the award comes from. As you said, Tebow is the best "all around" player because of his ability to run, pass, hit and block... would that not then make him the "best player". Because to me, being able to be great at four or five things sure beats being exceptional at one.

I can see losing "best at your postion" and yet winning best college player because of the other abilities. THAT makes sense.

Well that's the argument for why Tebow should get the Heisman without winning best QB. Some people think it makes sense, some people say that shouldn't happen. Either way it's confusing and there will be controversy...but i guess we're used to that with the BCS right?

Just some thoughts on Tebow .... Not going to get into the Heisman vs Maxwell award thing....

I have never been a fan of Tebow not at all and not even a little bit....During his season last year amazing as the stats he had was...

I was not impressed at all with them...Fastforward to this season....I still think he needs to stay in college and still makes bad throws, mechanics etc....However during this season watching him make some plays even though his stats was not as good..I was far more impressed by what I was seeing of him..1 more year could do wonders for his progression....

I can understand completely why others do not like him...Like him or hate him I will say this though..He is a special college player that has very much deserved the Hype/attention he has gotten from the media....

He has tremendous character and shown great leadership and I cant fault him for that....

Him and his family looked and sounded absolutely fantastic during the ESPN award show last night....

I was really impressed...I dont know how anybody could say anything other then that....Not talking about his ability at the QB position but him as a person..Just fantastic...
