  • Would you play in the CFL instead of College football?

    Bryce Brown to the C.F.L.?
    By Pete Thamel
WICHITA, Kan. – The top-ranked player in last year’s high school basketball class, Brandon Jennings, skipped college to play professionally overseas. Could the same thing happen in football?

Brian Butler, the controversial manager of the top-ranked football recruit, Bryce Brown, is open to the idea. Butler told The Times that if approached by a Canadian Football League team, he’d consider sending Brown there.

Butler said he planned to have someone explore the possibility of Brown playing in the C.F.L. next season. “If they were talking about any amount of real money, I’d guarantee it,” Butler said of Brown potentially playing in the C.F.L. He mentioned a C.F.L. team paying Brown $5 million a year for three years.

He added: “We’re not playing around. I can promise you that. I’m not scared at all to do anything, and Bryce isn’t either. Hey, he’ll hurt your feelings. He’s not worried about your feelings. He’s worried about what’s right and what’s wrong.”

Brown would be eligible to play in the C.F.L., because there’s no minimum age limit. In the N.F.L., a player has to be three years removed from his high school graduation class. But Brown’s price tag could be a hitch in Butler’s plans: C.F.L. teams have $4.2 million salary cap … per team.

Still, this notion raises an interesting possibility. Could we actually see a player leave an American high school and go straight to Canada?

Would you opt out of playing college football to play in the canadian football league?

I think this is stupid and he should be staying here. I mean i can see a kid coming out to play basketball even tho that is stupid as well. But skipping college football for professional? Thats just stupid everyone will be bigger faster and stronger than he thinks.

Your thoughts on Bryce Brown's possible choice?

The kid would never get to play with top talent ever in his career then.

I think it's a dumb idea but if he's that desperate for the money now then what can I say.

From a fan standpoint, no. I wouldn't. It would be tough to pass up a college education (for free) and having something to fall back on if your career is ended. I couldn't imagine being a top ranked recruit and passing on the pageantry involved with College Football. I LOVE it far more than the N.F.L. but whatever.

Now, from a business point of view.....I can see it. The kid wants to get paid, I don't blame him. But he's seriously underestimating the talent in the CFL in my opinion.

I hear that he denied that he would go to the CFL. Is anyone buying that he is going to Miami though?

          I don't see why he wouldn't. He's got a brother there, right?

I agree with you. The CFL is not that easy....

And I doubt they would pay anywhere near the amount that was stated. Players don't make real big money here.

he'd be insane to do it. what's he going to get if he goes to the cfl? 100k a year at most? no way he would get paid like the top cfl players do. and a college scholarsip is about 50k a year with a much greater chance of making it to the nfl than if you go through CFL.
i agree the CFL is pretty tough. there are a lot of former and future nfl players playing there. jeff garcia was in the CFL for a long time

Im looking at it from the view of a 29 year old who did not get the chance to go to college; no, I would not play in the CFL for a few bucks. There are experiences you'd get to go through tat you can't replicate by jumping ship too early and going to the CFL. THere are steps and processes. He's not a ature person, yet, and college allows you the chance to gain that maturity, physical as well. There is growth that you won't be allowed in the CFL. In college, you can still make some mistakes and have time to learn from them. Also... the education you hopefully would get would help you should you suffer that inevitable injury.

Ya I know his brother is there but I have heard that his brother is telling him that the program isn't going in the right direction and for him to look elsewhere. I hope it's true I would love to see him in Tennessee.

He isn't saying he will do it. He is saying if he gets 5 million a year he would do it. And he would be an idiot to not do it if he would somehow get that kind of money. Plenty of highly ranked recruits don't do well in college or get injured and never make it to the NFL. You would be retarded to pass up millions of dollars.

And a free education? Who cares- lets say he doesn't get to the NFL; he still has 5+ million dollars. You think he can't get a college education later on with that money if he really wants one?

As far as making it to the NFL; I don't think it would really be that different than going to college. Just like college, there would be a high chance he doesn't live up to expectations and never makes it. He would have less mainstream exposure, but that only matters to fans not to NFL decision makers. You can bet that NFL scouts know who he is and would follow his career. And as far as tougher competition, sure it would probably be harder and he wouldn't do as well. But scouts would obviously take that into consideration and would appraise him more on his potential than his CFL production.

All this is a moot point, because the CFL isn't ponying up 5-15 million dollars for a high schooler. The european basketball leagues that might start poaching high school players are willing to spend more money on individual players than the CFL can afford. By the way, Jennings might be struggling against professional european competition; but NBA scouts aren't holding that against him and he will still be a lottery pick.
