  • Caleb Hanie, CSU

Any Colorado State fans out there that recall this QB?. I watched him play in pre-season for the Bears last year. He has a stronger arm than Orton(our current QB), is WAY more mobile, and can break a tackle or 2 if necessary. What is still in question is his accuracy, and he didn't get enough reps to assess that ability...particularly downfield.

Mel Kiper was all over this guy last year recommending teams draft him. We signed him undrafted and nobody claimed him off our practice squad.

Does he have a nice touch on deep routes?

I can't say I've watched him play extensively. But in the couple years I saw him play against CU, he seemed inconsistent. Good arm, seems to make dumb mistakes in the wrong situations.

He threw into double coverage a lot, from what I remember. But he has the arm strength to get it deep, thats for sure.

BVP should know more about him

      Great Pre-season

Had a great pre-season last year and many in Chicago calling for him to be the starter.

We'll see what kind of competition Da Bears bring into Camp at the QB position.

My bet is you see Hanie holding on to his #2 spot with Da Bears. At the very least.

Why did Mc'D get rid of Hillis?

Ugh, Caleb Hanie haha. He is a solid QB, really good arm strength, great leadership ability, but his biggest problem is decision making. He is one of the better CSU QB's of the recent past, but in his senior season he made some decisions that ended up being costly. On the goal line against CU he threw into double coverage and they intercepted it in overtime and we lost the game. Against Cal a couple weeks later, going in to take the lead against them, same play as we ran against CU, same result, threw it into double coverage and an INT, and Cal just never let go after that. He just tries to force stuff that isn't there sometimes.

He has the ability, but not yet. Give him more first team reps and maybe some more playing time with the first team. With more practice he can definitly be a better QB than Orton.

Hope that helped a little bit. And along with many Bears fans, Im pulling for him to get the starting job.

          Hanie

I noticed some of those same problems with him last year during pre-season. He said he was having difficulty learning the offense. Here is some footage against KC:

          >>>Hmm, Orton, Hanie, and the #18 pick for Cutler?

why the hell would we want TWO mediocre qbs? this isn't like madden where quantity makes up for quality.

I'll tell you why, Cutler has no interest in playing for the Broncos anymore.

At this point, 2 mediocre QB's plus perhaps a draft pick as a replacement looks better than forcing a disgruntled QB to play in Denver.

In this case, quantity could serve both the Broncos and another team quite well for the future.

Think about it, if our GM is smart there will be no untouchable players to trade.

Urlacher, Briggs, Hester?...smart teams build around QB's.

Wow, I just discovered the College Football thread. Personally, I thought Hanie had all the talent in the world, and consider Sonny's biggest failures was not getting more out of not only Hanie, but even more so Justin Holland. If either one of those guys would have played for Coach Fairchild a lot more people would know how they are/were.

                  Go State!

The number 2 spot in Chicago is now wide open, if Cutler goes down we don't have a proven back-up.
