i am currently 2nd string on my freshman football team (newport harbor High) at Free Safety and i would like to have people who has had sucess over their lives in football (any position) give me advice on how to get better and what to get better at, im not that big but i can tackle really well because i have great tackling form and i get real low, im faster than the 1st sting safety which isn't really good at tackling and he always tries to go for the hard hit and never wraps up the ball carrier. but they like him because he has the intimidating Troy Polamalu look with his long hair and he is samoan. and i practice 100% every week and can catch really well. Im just sick and tired of rooting for my team on the sideline, and when the team wins i dont think i won if i didn't do anything to help them, it makes me feel like crap after games when our head coach says we played well and this is our reward (a win) but you can tell he is only talking to the starters. So i just want to improve my game and contribute to help the team win and prove to the many people who said i would never make it.

You've heard the phrase "fly around and make plays" well the truth is you have to make the right plays. The best safeties I have ever seen at all levels look out of control, but the truth is they always know where they are going and why they are going there. -

Im a coach at a local high school in my area, so maybe i could help a little. First I would start by going to your DBs coach on the varsity team or freshman DBs coach and see if you work with him on your back pedal, angels, run support, etc after practice. Also to when the coach ask for someone be the first to hop out there. Even if its something you've never played, its shows the coaches your willing to do whatever they ask.
Put in extra time with the coach after practice or on your own. To be a great player, not a good one, but a great one you have to out work opponents, teammates.
Also start putting in time in the weight room. The more time in the weight room the better. Also film study. Get in the film room at start breaking down your practice film or gametape. and do the same for your opponents for the up coming week so you know how to perpare that week.
In the offseason run track. You can never have enough speed.
Hope some of that helps.

I'd honestly just tell the coach about your intentions in wanting to start. Most of the time coaches show favoritism towards one player without even noticing and if the kid is indeed worse then you then you will be bound to get the starting position if you worked your ass off and show them you want it.
If this is a size issue then you'll just have to work even harder to show you can do just as well as the current starter but honestly I wouldn't keep my feelings bottled up if you are this serious about it.Comment

What everyone has said so far is true.
Work your ass off, let the coaches know by your attitude and practice that you want to do whatever it takes to help the team.
Like the coach said, weights, film study, extra practice.
Ask for criticism. LISTEN to the coaches. Be the first there and the last to leave. Eat, sleep, and breathe football.
They wanted to put me on the OL when I was a frosh, so I did what they told me to do. I really hit the weights, and one day, during all my hard work, my OL coach told me to jump in on an Oklahoma drill, and I creamed a LB.
Next day I was 2nd string FB, and it just got better from there.
Wear your emotions on your sleeve, but be humble. Practice or Play, never take a play off. Play with your hair on fire.sigpic

Lift weights in the offseason, work on your speed with sprints, jumptrainer for agility, and tackling is the easiest thing to do. I'd put my prioties for you like this-
1. Get bigger, stronger by lifting weights all throughout the offseason.
2. Become faster, speed is king in football.
3. Watch some video on the best safeties in football, see what they do and try to copy that into your own game.
Good luckLast edited by Bernie24; 10-22-2009, 12:25 PM.Comment

My advice to you is to volunteer for special teams. It lets the coach know you are a team player, plus you get to be on the playing field which gives you the opporitunity to make some plays.sigpic

The truth is you just gotta tell your coach how it is.
Let him know that he's lucky because they should be paying you because you are so good.
Everytime you make a play in practice scream at the top of your lungs "COACH, SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!!!"
Also, tape a sign on your back that says "#22 is no Dawkins"
I hope everyone knows I'm just messin around here....sigpic

I used to live in the apartments across the street from Newport Harbor High's stadium. Love watching any kind of football......
Back on topic....I played 3 years varsity football in HS, and when I was a freshman, I was 3rd string. I couldn't get noticed for sh*t. The thing that first got me noticed was that I played hard on special teams. It's really not hard to stand out on special teams.
2nd, I worked out in the weight room in the offseason and went to all the voluntary workouts. Varsity coaches started to remember my name eventually. I was a 3 year starter on varsity and went on to play D-I (IAA, but who's counting) football and started at that level too.
You're only a freshman. You will either grow into your body and develop athleticism, or you need to work you butt off to get noticed, like special teams and pletty of offseason weightroom visits.
